If your scene captures the whole display, alerts drawn on that display can appear in your YouTube stream. To keep them out, capture only the app or window you need when possible; if you must show the whole desktop, use your operating system’s notification or focus controls and test the result before going live.
Choose the right fix for your capture source
First identify which source in the active OBS scene is providing the desktop image. The choice matters: capture scope is controlled in OBS, while whether the operating system displays a notification is controlled by the OS.

Switch to a window or application capture when possible
Windows
- In OBS, select the scene that will be used for the stream and locate its desktop capture source.
- If the source is Display Capture, add or switch to a Window Capture source and select the application window you want viewers to see.
- Check the preview. Window Capture can show the selected window even when other windows are in front, so make sure the correct window is selected and framed as intended. OBS Window Capture Sources
macOS 13 and later
- Use a macOS Screen Capture source and choose Window Capture or Application Capture if the stream only needs a particular window or app.
- Confirm in the OBS preview that the desired window or application is visible.
- If you need to show the whole monitor instead, use the source’s Display Capture mode. OBS marks the older Display Capture and Window Capture sources as deprecated on macOS 13 and newer; use macOS Screen Capture for those systems. OBS macOS Screen Capture Source
Linux
OBS documents Linux capture options including XSHM and PipeWire screen capture, but the notification controls depend on the desktop environment and distribution. Choose the capture scope available in your setup, and consult the documentation for that specific environment before relying on a notification-suppression path.

If the full desktop must be visible
Keep Display Capture if viewers need the entire monitor, then use the notification or focus controls in your OS to prevent alerts from appearing during the broadcast. The exact current menu path varies by Windows, macOS, Linux distribution, and desktop environment, so use the official instructions for your installed version rather than relying on a generic path.

OBS’s own hide-from-capture settings solve a different problem: excluding the OBS interface from the image. On Windows, the option is at OBS Studio → Settings → General → “Hide OBS windows from screen capture.” On macOS 13 and later, use macOS Screen Capture in Display Capture mode and select “Hide OBS from capture.” These options are not documented as filters for notifications from other apps. OBS troubleshooting also suggests minimizing OBS when it is not needed or using a second display to keep OBS away from the captured display. Those workarounds can prevent the OBS window from appearing, but they do not turn off notifications. OBS Display Capture Sources

Test the scene before going live
- Open the exact scene and verify the active capture source and preview.
- Make a short test recording or private test stream using the same scene and capture settings planned for YouTube Live.
- If appropriate, trigger or wait for an ordinary notification, then inspect the recording or stream output—not just the OBS preview—to confirm whether it appears.
- If an alert is visible, switch to a narrower capture source or adjust the OS notification controls, then test again.

Desktop notifications are not stream alerts
Desktop notifications are generated by the operating system or an app and may be included when the display area containing them is captured. Stream alerts are intentional on-screen graphics. OBS says it does not directly provide stream alerts; third-party alert overlays can be added to a scene as a Browser Source. Adding such an overlay does not suppress operating-system notifications.
