First find out where the freeze happens: in OBS’s preview or recording, in the stream sent to YouTube, or only in viewers’ playback. Those symptoms point to different causes. Check OBS’s performance and dropped-frame indicators, then follow the matching steps below; there is no single fix that can be identified from the symptom alone.
Identify what is freezing
While reproducing the problem, compare OBS’s preview, a local recording and the YouTube stream. Note whether they freeze at the same time, and check OBS’s performance and dropped-frame indicators. The video input method—such as a browser source or a captured desktop window—and your operating system, encoder and OBS version are also relevant, but the symptom alone does not identify them.

A freeze in a local recording points away from a viewer-only playback problem. Conversely, if only viewers report buffering while OBS shows no dropped frames, changing OBS scenes may not address the cause.

If OBS preview or recording is freezing
- Reduce scene workload for a test. Temporarily disable sources and filters you do not need, and simplify the scene. Change one thing at a time and check whether the freeze improves.
- Lower output resolution or frame rate temporarily. Fewer pixels and frames can reduce the workload. Compare the result with your original settings before deciding whether the lower output is acceptable.
- On Windows, test administrator mode if GPU overload is indicated. OBS recommends running as administrator as a troubleshooting step for GPU overload. It is a test, not a guaranteed fix. See OBS’s performance guide.
- If Windows hardware scheduling or an encoder failure appears involved, test HAGS off. OBS’s HAGS guide recommends disabling Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling and rebooting when troubleshooting performance issues or hardware-encoder failures. Change this only as a diagnostic, restart Windows, and compare. See OBS’s HAGS instructions.
Do not buy a graphics card or replace the PC based only on the word “freezing.” First confirm that local rendering or encoding is the bottleneck. OBS’s system requirements page and performance guidance provide context, but the title does not supply enough system details to diagnose a specific machine.

If OBS is dropping frames
A rising dropped-frame count points to the stream connection or bitrate branch, rather than proving that the video loop itself is faulty. OBS notes that dropped frames in this context are extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself; the statement concerns connection drops to the remote stream server, not every kind of freeze.
- Check whether your connection is stable and can sustain the selected streaming bitrate.
- Test a wired connection instead of Wi-Fi; OBS recommends wired networking for stream stability.
- Check whether a VPN, security software or network-optimizing software is interfering. Also review network drivers and relevant network equipment.
- If you use dynamic bitrate, understand the trade-off: it may reduce dropped frames when the connection cannot keep up, but stream quality can fall. It does not repair the underlying connection problem.
Use OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide for its detailed checks. The available symptom does not establish that a network fault is the cause, so compare the dropped-frame indicator rather than assuming.

If viewers see buffering but OBS does not report dropped frames
Ask whether the problem affects all viewers or only some, and whether it occurs on particular connections or devices. OBS’s buffering guidance notes that viewer connection differences and stream bitrate or quality can matter even when OBS is not dropping frames. If the stream is difficult for some viewers to receive, reducing its bitrate or quality may help, but first distinguish viewer buffering from a freeze in OBS itself.

When to consider a hardware encoder
Consider an encoder change only after the indicators point to an encoding bottleneck. Hardware encoding can move encoding work off the CPU, but the right option depends on the computer, operating system and available hardware; it is not evidence by itself that an upgrade is necessary.
OBS documents NVENC, AMF, QSV and Apple VideoToolbox with system and hardware qualifications. Check OBS’s hardware encoding guide for compatibility and configuration examples. Those examples are settings guidance, not proof that a particular encoder will fix a YouTube playback freeze.

Looping-video checks and troubleshooting limits
The problem description does not establish whether the loop is a browser source, a captured browser window or another input. Do not assume one input method is responsible. Reproduce the issue and compare the preview, recording, stream and OBS indicators first; the matching branch above is more useful than changing an unrelated source setting.

- Preview and recording both freeze: test a simpler scene and lower output settings, then compare.
- Dropped frames rise: investigate the network and sustainable bitrate.
- Only viewers report buffering: consider viewer connections and stream quality.
- Hardware encoder fails or performance trouble persists on Windows: test the relevant administrator-mode or HAGS guidance, changing one variable at a time.
