To make OBS recordings smaller without reducing your YouTube stream quality, change the recording settings separately from the streaming settings. In OBS, open Settings → Output, switch Output Mode to Advanced, then adjust the Recording tab. Lower the recording quality, bitrate, resolution or frame rate as needed; leave the Streaming tab unchanged if your live picture is already right.
For the live stream, choose a bitrate for your resolution and frame rate that your actual upload connection can sustain. There is no single bitrate that is right for all creators in India: stable outbound upload speed, not the country label, is what matters.
Recording bitrate and streaming bitrate do different jobs
OBS can send one encoded video to YouTube and save a separate local recording. The stream bitrate affects the data sent over your internet connection; the recording bitrate or quality affects the size and quality of the file saved on your device. Lowering the recording setting does not have to lower the live stream quality.
In Settings → Output, Simple mode offers preset recording-quality choices. For more control, change Output Mode to Advanced and set recording options separately from streaming. Recording with settings other than Same as stream can use additional computer resources, so test the configuration before relying on it for a long broadcast. See the OBS overview and OBS recording guide.

Reduce the local recording file size
Start with OBS’s recording-quality preset
- In OBS, open Settings → Output.
- If Output Mode is Simple, find Recording Quality and choose a setting below Indistinguishable or Lossless. OBS describes High Quality as a medium-file-size option.
- If you need to preserve your existing live quality, change Output Mode to Advanced. Open the Recording tab and choose a recording encoder and quality or bitrate separately from the Streaming tab.
- Record a short sample with the same kind of content you plan to stream. Check both file size and visible detail, and confirm that OBS remains responsive.
OBS estimates that its Lossless recording preset can use around 7 GB per minute; this is an approximate figure in the OBS Project’s 2023 recording encoder presets guide, not a typical target for smaller recordings.
Lower resolution, frame rate or quality if needed
If the file is still too large, reduce the recording output resolution—for example, from 1080p to 720p—or reduce frame rate where the content does not need smooth motion. You can also lower the recording bitrate or quality further. Keep the aspect ratio and inspect small text, fast movement and fine detail in a sample: lower bitrate can create visible compression artifacts, lower resolution removes detail, and lower frame rate makes motion less smooth. OBS’s overview explains its resolution and FPS settings.

There is no universal recording bitrate for every OBS scene. A static presentation and fast-moving gameplay do not encode alike, and the result also depends on the encoder. OBS publishes bitrate examples for particular recording scenarios in its hardware encoding guide; those are not universal YouTube streaming settings.
Pick a codec with compatibility in mind
OBS lists AV1, HEVC and H.264 as a quality/file-size preference order for high-quality recording when supported. That does not mean every creator should switch codecs. AV1 may have weaker editing-software support; HEVC has compatibility and licensing considerations; H.264 remains widely compatible. Real-time software encoding can demand a high-end CPU. Hardware encoders shift encoding work to GPU hardware, but older hardware generations may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate. Check that your editor and playback devices support the selected codec before changing it. See OBS’s audio and video formats guide and hardware encoding guide.

Choose YouTube streaming settings for your upload connection
Use YouTube’s recommendations as a starting point for the selected codec and video mode, then verify that your connection can sustain the stream. The following H.264 figures are from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings table, accessed October 3, 2026; YouTube may update its guidance.
| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | Not stated in the cited YouTube table | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s H.264 figures, not India-wide requirements or guarantees of stream stability. The table has different recommendations for AV1 and H.265, so use the figures for the codec you select. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding 4 seconds. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings before applying a configuration.

Test the outbound upload speed
- Run an internet speed test under conditions similar to your usual stream, including typical household network use.
- Compare the measured upload speed—not download speed—with the bitrate you plan to send. YouTube notes that download bandwidth is often higher than upload bandwidth.
- Leave capacity for network variation and other devices. YouTube Help says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” See its streaming tips.
- If OBS reports dropped frames, lower the live bitrate and test again. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when troubleshooting; this is guidance, not a guaranteed formula for every connection.
When possible, connect the streaming computer by Ethernet. If connection trouble persists, OBS also suggests trying a different server. Follow the OBS connection troubleshooting guide. If your upload cannot sustain the target, reducing the live resolution or frame rate may be preferable to keeping a higher-quality setting that drops frames.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a recording format that can survive an interruption
OBS recommends recording to MKV because a recording can remain recoverable if OBS or the system stops unexpectedly. If your editor or upload workflow requires MP4, use OBS’s built-in remuxing feature after the recording. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding, so it helps with compatibility and recovery—not file-size reduction. Container choice itself does not provide meaningful compression. See the OBS recording guide and formats guide.

Troubleshoot oversized recordings and unstable streams
- The local file is large, but the live stream looks right: Change the recording settings only. In Advanced output, check that you are editing the Recording tab, not Streaming.
- The stream drops frames: Check actual upload speed, leave room for variation, and reduce the live bitrate if necessary. Try Ethernet and consult OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps.
- The recording looks blocky: The recording bitrate or quality may be too low for the scene. Raise it, or reduce resolution or frame rate only if the resulting loss of detail or motion smoothness is acceptable.
- OBS struggles after separate recording settings are enabled: Recording with settings other than Same as stream can add computer workload. Test a different supported encoder or preset and check the system’s performance during a representative stream.
- An MP4 recording is damaged after an abrupt shutdown: Prefer MKV for future recordings, then remux completed files to MP4 if needed. Remuxing cannot restore data that was never saved.
- A new codec will not play or edit: Confirm support in the playback device and editing software, then use a compatible codec such as H.264 if needed.
