How do I stop OBS from freezing when looping a video overnight? There is no single setting that guarantees an overnight session will stay stable. First identify what is freezing, check the loop configuration, and test one change at a time. Then inspect the log from the affected session. If you record locally, use MKV or FLV to reduce the risk of losing the recording if OBS is interrupted.
First identify what “freezing” means
OBS becoming unresponsive, a frozen preview, and a recording that continues in duration but shows one frozen frame are different symptoms. A missing or damaged recording after a hang is different again. Check the output and the OBS session log before deciding that OBS itself stopped or guessing at the cause.

- OBS window or process is unresponsive: note whether the whole computer also hangs. Keep the affected session’s log and any crash information.
- Preview is stuck: check whether the recording or other output continued before treating it as a full OBS freeze.
- Recording duration advances but the picture is stuck: treat this as an output, encoding, or source symptom; the symptom alone does not identify which one.
- Recording is missing or corrupt after interruption: change the recording container for future sessions; that can protect the file but does not prevent a freeze.
Work through the checks in a controlled order
- Write down the setup. Record the OBS version, operating system, video file type, and whether OBS, the preview, the output, or the whole computer froze. Note whether recording continued and what the saved file shows.
- Check the source’s loop setting. For a single lecture file, select the Media Source in the scene and open its properties. Confirm
Loopis enabled. OBS documents this option as off by default.Restart playback when source becomes activeis separate and on by default; it restarts playback when the source becomes active, rather than making a completed file loop. See the OBS Media Sources guide. - If using a playlist, check VLC Video. Confirm
Loop Playlistis enabled. VLC Video requires VLC to be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. For one file, Media Source is the simpler choice unless playlist or format support is needed. The OBS guide covers both source types. - Compare hardware decoding on and off. In the Media Source properties, change hardware decoding and repeat the same test. OBS documents hardware decoding as off by default; when enabled, it uses the GPU if a suitable decoder is available. Treat this strictly as an A/B troubleshooting test: neither setting is a universal fix. Change only this variable between runs.
- Simplify the scene. Temporarily test with only the lecture source and the necessary output. Remove unnecessary filters, browser sources, overlays, and other sources. OBS still needs GPU resources to composite and render, and a complex scene or its sources can consume resources even when they are not visible. If the output does not need the file’s full resolution, test a lower-resolution copy. See OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
- On Windows, test with HAGS disabled. Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) is a Windows setting that OBS says may cause performance problems and failures with OBS and hardware encoders. OBS recommends disabling it as a troubleshooting step for performance problems or freezing. Reboot after changing it, repeat the same test, and restore the setting if the comparison does not help. This is a Windows-specific test, not an explanation for every freeze. See OBS’s HAGS guidance.
- Repeat the test, then capture the log. Try to reproduce the problem in a controlled run before relying on another overnight session. A short run can help compare settings, but it cannot prove overnight stability. After a session that includes the problem, use
Help > Log Filesin OBS to upload that session’s log, then review it with the OBS Log Analyzer. A log from a different session may not contain the failure.
Protect the recording if OBS is interrupted
Set OBS to record in MKV or FLV rather than MP4 or MOV when an interrupted session could cost you the lecture. OBS’s Log Analyzer warns that interruption can leave an MP4 or MOV recording corrupted and unrecoverable. If your editing or delivery workflow needs MP4, remux the completed recording in OBS afterward. Container choice reduces one kind of file-loss risk; it does not stop OBS from freezing. Check for conflicts if OBS still hangs
OBS notes that graphics-hooking applications can cause crashes or unusual behavior. If overlays, another capture program, or another recording application is running, close them temporarily and repeat the test. This controlled comparison can help identify a conflict, but the presence of an overlay alone does not establish that it caused the freeze. If OBS remains unresponsive, include the affected-session log and crash information when seeking help. See OBS Known Application Conflicts.
