How to Stop OBS Dropping Frames in a 24/7 Pre-Recorded YouTube Stream

The first fix for OBS dropped frames is identifying the counter that is rising. This guide separates network problems from local rendering and encoding lag, then covers sustainable bitrate, YouTube settings, troubleshooting, and 24/7 archive limits.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Open OBS Studio’s View → Stats window and watch which counter rises. “Dropped Frames (Network)” points to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate your network cannot sustain. Rendering Lag and Encoding Lag point to local GPU or encoder workload instead. Fix the cause shown by the counter; lowering bitrate will not solve every kind of stutter.

Diagnose the problem in OBS before changing settings

In OBS, select View → Stats. Keep the window open while the stream is running and note whether network-dropped frames, rendering lag, or encoding lag increases. OBS distinguishes a connection problem from local rendering or encoding trouble; its connection guide says network drops occur when the route to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting, 2024-09-30).

  • Dropped Frames (Network): investigate bitrate and the computer-to-YouTube network path first.
  • Rendering Lag: OBS is struggling to composite and render the scene in time, often because the GPU is busy.
  • Encoding Lag: the selected encoder or hardware cannot encode the output consistently at the current settings.

Do not treat every visual pause as a network drop. If OBS counters remain clear but viewers report buffering, their device, location, or connection may be the limiting factor. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, and OBS notes that a lower bitrate or following the platform’s recommendations can make a stream more accessible to viewers (OBS Streaming Lag and Stuttering; YouTube live encoder settings).

If the network counter rises, stabilize the connection

Choose a bitrate the route can sustain

Use a bitrate supported by both YouTube’s recommendation for your chosen codec and output format, and your connection’s stable upload capacity. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting guideline, not a guarantee; shared use, congestion, and route instability can make less necessary. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and choosing a quality that produces a reliable stream.

YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingestion ranges include 5–14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 6–17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 3–8 Mbps for 720p at either 30 or 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not proof that a particular connection can sustain the selected rate. YouTube lists different ranges for AV1 and H.265. Check the current table for your codec and settings at YouTube’s live encoder settings.

When testing a lower bitrate, change it deliberately, then watch the Stats window and YouTube’s stream-health messages. A lower target may trade detail for a more resilient stream; it is often preferable to a bitrate that repeatedly exceeds the route’s capacity.

Work through the network path

  1. Prefer wired Ethernet. If the computer is on Wi-Fi, connect it to the router by Ethernet and compare the Stats counters. Wi-Fi can be unstable, but a cable will not fix every network cause.
  2. Try a different YouTube ingest server in OBS’s stream settings, then monitor whether network drops continue.
  3. Check software and drivers. Temporarily investigate VPNs, firewall or antivirus interference, bundled network-prioritization utilities, and outdated network drivers.
  4. On Windows, test OBS network options. Under Settings → Advanced → Network, try network optimizations and TCP pacing. These options are Windows-only. Leave Bind to IP at Default; test IPv4 Only only if necessary, and return to IPv4 and IPv6 if it makes no difference.
  5. Isolate the service or hardware. OBS suggests testing another streaming service to determine whether the issue is service-specific. If the router, modem, cable, network card, switch, or extender may be at fault—or troubleshooting does not resolve the issue—contact your ISP before replacing equipment.

If you depend on Wi-Fi or need a wired link to the router, an Ethernet cable is a possible practical purchase. It only addresses the wireless link; it cannot fix ISP congestion, a faulty router, software interference, or an excessive bitrate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback

OBS’s Settings → Advanced → Network → Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment (Beta) option lowers bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, reducing network frame drops at the cost of video quality. OBS warns that this does not resolve the underlying cause. Treat it as a fallback while diagnosing instability, not a substitute for a reliable route and sustainable bitrate (OBS connection troubleshooting).

If rendering or encoding lag rises, reduce local load

Rendering and encoding trouble means the stream computer is not keeping up with the work OBS is doing locally. OBS needs GPU capacity to composite and render scenes; sources, filters, and output settings can consume that capacity even when the video itself is prerecorded. Change one factor at a time and check whether the same counter improves.

  • Close other GPU-heavy applications. If a game or comparable workload is running, reduce its graphics load or cap its frame rate.
  • Simplify OBS scenes and collections. Review resource-heavy browser sources, filters, oversized media, and other unnecessary scene elements.
  • Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the computer cannot sustain the current combination.
  • If 60 fps is causing trouble, try 30 fps and monitor the result. This reduces workload but also changes motion smoothness; it is not a universal preset.
  • On Windows, try running OBS as administrator if GPU overload persists; OBS says this may resolve some overload situations.

There is no single encoder, preset, or PC specification established as best for every prerecorded 24/7 stream. The right choice depends on the OBS counter, hardware, codec, output resolution and frame rate, and the workload running alongside OBS. See OBS encoding performance troubleshooting for its performance guidance.

Check YouTube’s encoder settings and test representative content

For RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, specifies CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission to its servers. Match the codec-specific bitrate range to your output rather than choosing a value in isolation; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Run an upload speed test and choose a bitrate with room for real-world variation.
  2. Before relying on the stream, test with audio and video movement similar to what the loop will contain. A static or silent segment may not expose the same workload or quality issues.
  3. Watch OBS Stats and YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test and after the stream starts.

YouTube specifically recommends testing beforehand with audio and movement similar to the actual stream. A clean test is useful evidence, not a guarantee against later route congestion or viewer-side buffering.

Account for the archive and DVR limits of a 24/7 session

A continuous stream running longer than 12 hours is outside YouTube’s automatic-archive assurance. YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Do not treat a continuously running broadcast as a guaranteed complete YouTube archive (YouTube Archive live streams; YouTube DVR).

  • Keep a local recording if you need an archive, and verify that the file is growing during the broadcast.
  • Monitor audio, video, OBS Stats, and YouTube stream health while the stream is live.
  • If you have configured a backup encoder, test the failover procedure in advance. YouTube’s live-streaming tips describe testing by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting Ethernet when a backup encoder is configured; this does not establish automatic failover from a single OBS computer (YouTube live streaming tips).

Or let it run in the cloud

If the challenge is keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud.
