That timing helps narrow what to check, but it does not prove Norton caused the problem. Norton’s Windows troubleshooting guide lists several possible causes and offers built-in checks; none guarantees a speed improvement on every computer.
Start by identifying when the computer slows down
Note whether the delay is mainly when Windows starts, during a Norton scan, or during ordinary use. Norton lists infection, startup load, unnecessary files, and disk fragmentation among possible causes of slow performance, but that vendor list is not a complete diagnosis of every PC.

A slowdown noticed after installing Norton 360 is not, by itself, evidence that Norton is responsible. Work through the relevant checks below and see whether the specific symptom changes.
Run scans if infection is a plausible cause
Norton recommends checking for threats with Startup Scan and Full Scan when appropriate. Its guide describes using advanced scan settings, including the highest sensitivity and scanning archives. These settings can make a scan take longer depending on the computer’s speed and the volume of files; a long scan alone does not show that Norton is permanently slowing the PC.

Follow Norton’s instructions for your installed version in its Windows guide to fixing slow computer problems. Scans may use system resources while they run, so assess ordinary performance after the scan finishes rather than judging only by activity during the scan.
Reduce unnecessary startup load
If Windows takes a long time to become usable, review the programs that launch at startup. Norton documents this route in its interface: Performance > Startup Manager. The listed programs can have one of three launch choices:

- Startup: The program launches with Windows.
- Disabled: The program does not launch with Windows.
- Delay: The program loads after Windows startup completes. Norton says delayed apps can also be opened manually.
Change only programs you recognize and do not need immediately. Norton’s slow-start guidance also suggests checking Resource Usage when deciding which programs to delay. If you are unsure what an item does, leave it unchanged and look up the program before altering its startup behavior. See Norton’s slow-start troubleshooting guide and Startup Manager instructions.

Norton identifies multiple third-party security products as one possible cause of slow startup. Norton’s guidance says multiple security solutions are generally not optimized to work together and may degrade performance. This is Norton’s compatibility advice, not proof that a second product is the cause on a particular PC.

If you find another security product, consult its maker’s removal instructions before uninstalling it, then restart Windows. Do not remove protection without understanding what will remain active. Norton discusses the issue in its slow-start guide.
Try cleanup or drive optimization only when relevant
Norton’s Windows guide includes two additional controls. They are troubleshooting options for the conditions they address, not universal speed fixes.

- File Cleanup: Review the available categories and select items you want removed. Inspect what is selected rather than assuming every suggested deletion is appropriate.
- Optimize Disk: Select the drive or drives offered in the Norton interface and run optimization if fragmentation is relevant to the drive and situation.
Norton documents these steps in its Windows performance troubleshooting guide. The guide does not establish that either control will make every computer faster.
Do not treat Norton Utilities Ultimate as a required fix
Norton Utilities Ultimate is a separate optimization product, not a prerequisite in Norton’s Norton 360 troubleshooting steps. Norton documents features for managing background processes and unwanted programs; it also warns that disabling a background process can change how an app behaves and advises against turning off a program used daily. If the slowdown continues
If the problem remains after the relevant checks, record whether it affects startup, scanning, or normal use, along with when it began and what changed. Contact Norton support or a qualified PC technician with those details. Norton’s published steps do not provide one diagnostic procedure that applies to every Windows version and hardware configuration.
Norton says its security product is designed to provide protection without sacrificing performance, but that is the company’s product claim, not independent benchmark evidence for your specific computer: Norton device security help.
