Start by turning off Android Auto’s media auto-start or resume setting in your phone’s Android Auto settings. If music still starts, check whether the app allows connected devices to start playback, then find out whether the car is sending a Bluetooth play command. The right fix depends on what event starts playback, and setting names can vary by Android version, phone, app, and vehicle.
Turn off Android Auto media auto-start or resume
On your phone, open Android Auto settings and look for a setting that starts or automatically resumes music or media. Turn it off. The wording and menu location can differ between devices and Android versions, so look for the function rather than relying on one exact path.

Google’s Android Auto help explains that you can listen to music and podcasts through your car’s speakers, but it does not document one universal setting path for suppressing autoplay. Android Auto Community replies mention labels such as “Start Music Automatically”; those reports are community guidance, not confirmation of a current setting on every phone.

YouTube Music
If you use YouTube Music, open the app’s playback settings and look for “Allow external devices to start playback.” A YouTube Music Community answer recommends turning this off to stop a connected device from initiating playback. Treat this as a setting to check, not a guaranteed fix: the current app interface may differ. This control is separate from Android Auto’s media auto-start setting.

Google’s YouTube Music help says to sign in to the YouTube Music app and use the Music tab in Android Auto. It explains setup and access, not a subscription requirement for changing playback behavior.
Spotify or another music app
For Spotify, the available official guidance does not establish a current app-specific switch that reliably prevents Android Auto or a car from resuming playback. Check Android Auto’s media setting first. If playback begins as soon as Bluetooth connects, investigate the car’s Bluetooth behavior rather than assuming Spotify is the trigger. For another app, look for an external-device playback control only if that app provides one; labels and availability can vary.

Find out what triggers playback
Notice exactly when the music starts. Playback on Bluetooth connection, playback when Android Auto launches, resuming a previous media session, and a track starting after a queue ends are distinct behaviors. A setting that affects one may not affect the others.

- It starts when Android Auto opens: revisit Android Auto’s media auto-start or resume setting.
- It resumes the last song or session: focus on media resumption, rather than a queue or playlist setting.
- It continues with more tracks after one finishes: check the app’s queue or autoplay controls. YouTube Music Community guidance distinguishes queue autoplay from playback initiated by an external device.
To isolate the trigger, change one relevant setting at a time and reconnect the phone. If turning off Android Auto’s setting does not change playback that begins at Bluetooth connection, check the car and app controls separately.

What not to rely on
Removing a music app from Android Auto’s launcher has been suggested in a community reply as a way to change which apps are visible. That report does not establish it as a reliable way to stop playback, so use it only if your goal is to change app visibility—not as the primary autoplay fix.
Google’s Android Auto usage guidance includes voice commands such as “Play my playlist on Spotify” and “Play [artist] on YouTube Music.” These examples explain how to request media, not how to prevent it from starting automatically.
