Turn off auto-start in Microsoft Teams
- Open Microsoft Teams and select your profile picture in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings and more > Settings > General.
- Under System, clear Auto-start Teams.
Microsoft documents this control in its Teams settings guidance. Teams can also continue running in the background after its window closes. If that is the behavior you want to change, review the nearby background and close-window settings; they are separate from the auto-start checkbox.

Disable Teams in Windows Startup settings
Windows 10 and Windows 11 provide a system-level startup toggle for apps registered to launch when you sign in:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Find Microsoft Teams and set its switch to Off.
Microsoft’s Windows startup-app instructions describe this route for both Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Disable Teams from Task Manager
- Right-click Start and select Task Manager.
- Open Startup apps.
- Select Microsoft Teams and choose Disable.
Task Manager and Windows Settings show the same registered startup-app list. Task Manager also displays startup-impact information, which can help when checking other apps that launch at sign-in.
If Teams does not appear in the startup list
Microsoft’s Windows guidance recommends checking Startup folders when an app is missing from the usual startup list. In File Explorer’s address bar, enter shell:startup to open the current user’s Startup folder, or shell:common startup to open the folder shared by all users. Check for a Teams shortcut or other Teams-related entry before removing or changing anything. These folders are a separate place to look; do not assume that an unlisted Teams entry must be there.

Which method should you use?

Microsoft documents these routes but does not establish that one method always overrides every other possible way an app could be launched. If Teams still opens after you disable it, check the other listed controls and the Startup folders rather than assuming the first change covered every launch mechanism.

Microsoft notes that startup apps can contribute to startup time and background activity, and recommends disabling apps that do not need to launch automatically. Task Manager’s impact labels—None, Not Measured, Low, Medium, or High—are Windows’ reported categories, not a guaranteed speed improvement. There is no established Teams-specific figure for seconds saved or memory reduced by changing this setting. See Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance for the general advice.
