The most precise fix is per app: open Settings > Notifications, tap the app, and turn off Lock Screen under Alerts. The app can still notify you through other enabled locations. If you want no notifications from that app, turn off Allow Notifications instead. For privacy, keep alerts but set Show Previews to When Unlocked or Never.
Choose the result you actually want
“Interrupting” can mean several different things on an iPhone. A notification may be appearing on the Lock Screen, revealing message text, making a sound, lighting the display, or arriving too often. Each problem has a different control. Start by deciding whether you want to remove the alert, hide its contents, delay it, or simply make the Lock Screen less crowded.

| Goal | Best setting | What changes | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remove one app from the Lock Screen | Turn off that app’s Lock Screen alert location | The app no longer places alerts on the Lock Screen | Notifications may still appear in Notification Center or as banners |
| Disable one app completely | Turn off Allow Notifications | The app’s notifications are disabled | You will not receive that app’s alerts through any enabled channel |
| Keep the alert but hide its text | Show Previews: When Unlocked or Never | Notification content is concealed until the chosen condition is met | The notification itself can still appear |
| Quiet an app temporarily | Swipe left on an alert, then Options | Mute it for one hour or the rest of the day when those choices are offered | The mute expires |
| Receive selected apps in batches | Scheduled Summary | Included notifications arrive at selected summary times | Included alerts are delayed instead of delivered immediately |
| Silence or filter alerts by context | Focus | Allows selected people and apps while silencing others, with scheduling | Critical Alerts from supported apps can still come through |
| Reduce visual clutter | Count, Stack, or List | Changes how alerts are displayed | Does not stop apps from sending notifications |
Diagnose the interruption before changing settings
Look at what happens when the iPhone is locked. If an app’s card is visible but you do not want it there, change its alert location. If the card is acceptable but the message text is exposed, change previews. If you only need a quiet period, use the notification’s Options menu or a Focus. If several apps are competing for attention, Scheduled Summary or a recurring Focus is more efficient than editing every alert one at a time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThese controls can be combined. For example, you can remove a social app from the Lock Screen, set a messaging app to show previews only after unlocking, place news apps in Scheduled Summary, and use a Work Focus during office hours. There is no need to disable every notification just because one category is distracting.

Remove one app’s notifications from the Lock Screen
This is usually the right answer when one app is responsible for the interruptions but you still want its alerts available elsewhere.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Under Notification Style, tap the app you want to change.
- In the Alerts section, turn off Lock Screen.
Depending on the app and your iOS version, you may also see Notification Center and Banners. Leave those enabled if you want the app to remain available in those places. Turning off only Lock Screen does not stop delivery altogether; it changes the alert locations.
If you cannot find a particular type of alert, check the app’s own notification settings. Some apps divide notifications into categories, such as direct messages, group activity, reminders, or marketing notices. Disabling an unwanted category inside the app can be more precise than disabling the entire app. Category names and available switches are controlled by the app, so two apps may expose different choices.

Disable every notification from one app
Use this when the app should not alert you anywhere.
- Go to Settings > Notifications.
- Tap the app under Notification Style.
- Turn off Allow Notifications.
The app’s notifications are then disabled rather than merely removed from the Lock Screen. You can return to the same screen and re-enable the setting later. This is a broader change than turning off Lock Screen, so use it only when Notification Center, banners, sounds, and other delivery methods are unwanted too.
Hide notification contents without hiding the alert
If the problem is privacy rather than the number of alerts, change previews instead of disabling Lock Screen alerts. A notification can remain visible while its message, sender details, or other content stays hidden.
- Open Settings > Notifications.
- Tap Show Previews for the global setting, or open an individual app and use its preview control when available.
- Choose When Unlocked or Never.
When Unlocked hides the contents while the iPhone is locked and reveals them after authentication. Never keeps the contents hidden in notification surfaces. Always allows contents to appear before unlocking. Not every app supports previews, so the exact behavior can vary.
This setting does not prevent the notification from arriving. If an alert’s presence itself is distracting, turn off its Lock Screen location as described above. Conversely, turning off Lock Screen does not necessarily hide content in Notification Center or a banner that remains enabled; preview settings and alert-location settings solve different problems.
Mute an app directly from an incoming notification
For a temporary interruption—such as a busy group chat—you do not need to open Settings.
- On the Lock Screen or in Notification Center, swipe left on the notification or its group.
- Tap Options.
- Choose the offered one-hour mute or the option to mute for the rest of the day.
During the mute period, Apple says the app’s notifications go directly to Notification Center. They do not appear on the Lock Screen, play a sound, light the screen, or show a banner. The exact choices can depend on the notification and current software.
This is narrower than turning off Allow Notifications and shorter-lived than a Focus schedule. It is useful when you want the app restored automatically after a meeting, commute, or evening. To restore alerts before the mute expires, find one of the app’s notifications in Notification Center, swipe left, tap Options, and choose Unmute when it is offered.

Batch non-urgent alerts with Scheduled Summary
Scheduled Summary is useful when you want to see notifications but not at the moment every app sends them. You select apps and one or more delivery times; iPhone then groups those notifications into summaries.
- Open Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary.
- Turn on Scheduled Summary.
- Set the summary time or times that suit your routine.
- Select the apps whose notifications should be included.
When an app offers delivery choices, open its notification settings and select Scheduled Summary rather than Immediate Delivery. Immediate Delivery continues to send alerts as they arrive. If an app does not appear in the summary list, check that Allow Notifications is enabled for it first.
Summary is a delivery schedule, not a deletion rule. The notifications remain available, but included alerts wait for the next selected summary time instead of interrupting you immediately. Choose times when you are already likely to review your phone—for example, a break and the end of the day—rather than creating many closely spaced summaries that recreate constant checking.
Use Scheduled Summary for apps whose messages are useful but rarely urgent, such as news, shopping, social updates, or promotional notices. Keep genuinely time-sensitive communication on Immediate Delivery or allow it through a Focus.

Use Focus to silence notifications by time, activity, or place
Focus is the broadest option when your needs change during the day. A Focus can silence all notifications or allow only selected people and apps. You can configure separate modes for activities such as work, sleep, exercise, or personal time.
Configure a Focus
- Open Settings > Focus.
- Select Do Not Disturb, Work, Personal, Sleep, or another Focus.
- Choose the people whose calls or notifications are allowed.
- Choose the apps whose notifications are allowed.
- Open Options and set whether silenced notifications may appear on the Lock Screen.
- Add a schedule if the Focus should activate automatically.
Apple describes Focus as a way to concentrate by minimizing distractions. The allowed-people and allowed-app lists make it possible, for example, to silence social apps while keeping calls from family or alerts from a time-sensitive work app. A Focus can therefore be more practical than repeatedly switching individual apps on and off.
Pay attention to the Lock Screen option inside Focus. Depending on your choice, silenced notifications may remain visible there in a subdued form or stay out of sight until you review them elsewhere. This setting controls the presentation of silenced notifications; it does not permanently change each app’s normal alert locations.

Turn on Do Not Disturb quickly
- Open Control Center.
- Touch and hold Focus.
- Tap Do Not Disturb.
If Do Not Disturb keeps turning on, open Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb and inspect its schedules or other automatic activation rules. Remove or edit a schedule that no longer matches your routine. If the wrong notifications are getting through, review both the allowed people and allowed apps lists; changing only the schedule will not change who or what is permitted.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Understand Focus’s limits
Focus is not a guarantee that every alert will be blocked. Supported apps can send Critical Alerts, which may arrive even when the iPhone is muted or a Focus is active. Whether an app offers Critical Alerts and the controls available for them depend on the app. Do not rely on Focus alone for situations in which every possible sound or alert must be prevented.
Change the Lock Screen’s notification layout
If alerts are useful but the Lock Screen looks crowded, change presentation rather than delivery. On iOS 16 or later, open Settings > Notifications and choose how notifications appear on the Lock Screen:
- Count shows a total at the bottom of the screen.
- Stack groups notifications in a layered stack.
- List displays notifications as a conventional list.
These choices affect visual organization only. They do not stop an app from sending alerts, change its sound, or move it to Scheduled Summary. Choose Count when you want the least visual detail, Stack when grouping is helpful, or List when you need to scan individual alerts quickly.
Fixes when the expected option is missing
The app is not listed under Notification Style
An app generally appears after it has requested notification permission. Check Settings > Notifications and search the list carefully. If the app has never requested permission, open it and complete its notification prompt, then return to Settings. If permission was previously denied, the app may need to be enabled from its entry in Settings before its notification choices are available.
Lock Screen is unavailable or labels differ
Notification controls vary by app and iOS release. Look for an Alerts area, alert locations, or notification categories. An app may manage some categories in its own settings rather than exposing every control in iPhone Settings. Menu names can also shift between software versions, so use the closest matching notification or alert control rather than assuming every app has identical switches.
Notifications still arrive after turning off Lock Screen
Turning off Lock Screen leaves other locations active. Check the app’s settings for Notification Center and Banners, and review sounds or badges if those are the actual source of the interruption. Turn off Allow Notifications if you want the app disabled everywhere. If only a banner or sound is bothersome, changing that specific delivery method is less disruptive than disabling the app entirely.
The message text is still visible
Verify Settings > Notifications > Show Previews and select When Unlocked or Never. If only one app exposes the issue, open that app’s notification settings and check its per-app preview control. Some apps do not support Apple’s preview behavior consistently. Remember that preview protection affects the contents, not whether a notification card or count can be present.

Scheduled Summary does not include an app
Confirm that Allow Notifications is enabled for the app, then return to Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary and add it. If the app provides Immediate Delivery and Scheduled Summary choices, select the latter for the categories you want delayed. An app that is disabled completely cannot be delivered in a summary until its notifications are allowed again.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical setup for fewer interruptions
For most people, a layered setup works better than one extreme switch:
- Remove Lock Screen alerts from apps that are not time-sensitive.
- Set message-heavy apps to Show Previews: When Unlocked if you still need their alerts.
- Use Scheduled Summary for news, shopping, social, and other non-urgent apps.
- Create a Focus for work, sleep, or other periods when only selected people and apps should break through.
- Mute individual conversations for one hour or the day when a temporary interruption starts.
- Use Count, Stack, or List to make the remaining Lock Screen alerts easier to scan.
Check the result after each change: lock the iPhone, send yourself a test alert from the affected app, and verify whether it appears on the Lock Screen, in Notification Center, as a banner, or only at the next summary. This separates a delivery problem from a preview or layout problem. Test while the relevant Focus is both on and off if you use schedules, because a notification can behave differently under the Focus’s allowed-app and Lock Screen rules.
Common scenarios and the narrowest fix
“I want messages available, but not visible to someone looking at my phone.”
Keep the app’s alert locations and set Show Previews to When Unlocked or Never. This preserves an indication that something arrived while concealing the text.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“A shopping or news app keeps filling the Lock Screen.”
Turn off that app’s Lock Screen location, or place it in Scheduled Summary if you still want a digest at selected times. Do not use Allow Notifications off unless you want to lose all of its alerts.
“A group chat is disruptive only today.”
Swipe left on one of its notifications, tap Options, and choose the one-hour or today mute. The app’s alerts go to Notification Center without Lock Screen, sound, light, or banner presentation during the mute.
“I need a quiet work period but must hear from a few people.”
Create or edit a Work Focus, allow the necessary people and apps, and set a schedule. In Focus options, decide whether silenced notifications should remain visible on the Lock Screen.
What each control does—and does not do
- Lock Screen off: removes that alert location, but does not necessarily stop Notification Center, banners, sounds, or badges.
- Allow Notifications off: disables the app’s notification delivery rather than hiding only its Lock Screen entry.
- Show Previews: protects content visibility; it does not suppress the alert itself.
- Mute from Options: temporarily sends the app’s alerts to Notification Center without Lock Screen, sound, light, or banner presentation during the selected period.
- Scheduled Summary: delays selected apps until chosen times.
- Focus: filters notifications according to allowed people, apps, and schedules, but supported Critical Alerts may bypass it.
- Count, Stack, and List: reorganize the Lock Screen; they do not change which apps can notify you.
Final check before you leave Settings
Decide whether you are solving visibility, privacy, timing, or complete suppression. Then use the narrowest control: turn off Lock Screen for one app, change Show Previews for private content, mute an app for a short period, schedule non-urgent delivery, or configure Focus for a recurring context. Reserve Allow Notifications for apps you do not want notifying you at all.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop one app from appearing on my iPhone Lock Screen?
Open Settings > Notifications, tap the app under Notification Style, and turn off Lock Screen in the Alerts section. Leave Notification Center or Banners enabled if you still want alerts in those locations.
How do I stop all notifications from an iPhone app?
Go to Settings > Notifications, select the app, and turn off Allow Notifications. This disables the app’s notifications rather than hiding only its Lock Screen alerts.
Can I hide notification message text but keep the alert?
Yes. In Settings > Notifications > Show Previews, choose When Unlocked or Never. The notification can still appear, but its contents are concealed.
How do I temporarily silence an app without changing Settings?
Swipe left on the notification or its group, tap Options, and choose the offered one-hour or rest-of-day mute. Muted alerts go to Notification Center and do not appear on the Lock Screen, play a sound, light the display, or show a banner during that period.
What is the difference between Scheduled Summary and Focus?
Scheduled Summary batches selected apps and delivers them at chosen times. Focus filters notifications by context, allowing selected people and apps while silencing others, with optional schedules and Lock Screen behavior.
Why are notifications still arriving after I turn off Lock Screen?
Turning off Lock Screen removes only that delivery location. The app may still use Notification Center or Banners. Turn off those locations too, or disable Allow Notifications if you want the app’s alerts stopped everywhere.
Why does Do Not Disturb turn on by itself?
Open Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb and inspect its schedules and automatic activation rules. Edit or remove the schedule that no longer matches your routine, and check whether another Focus has its own schedule.
Will Focus block every notification?
No. Apple says supported apps can send Critical Alerts even when the iPhone is muted or a Focus is active. Availability and controls for Critical Alerts depend on the app.

The Bottom Line
For one troublesome app, turn off its Lock Screen alert location. Hide private text with Show Previews, mute temporary interruptions from Options, batch non-urgent apps with Scheduled Summary, and use Focus for recurring quiet periods. Turn off Allow Notifications only when you want an app silenced everywhere.
