If the whole screen is dim, adjust brightness instead: that is a separate setting.
Hide the wallpaper but keep the Always-On Lock Screen
On supported models, Always-On Display leaves a dimmed version of the Lock Screen visible while the iPhone is locked. Apple lets you hide the wallpaper without hiding other Always-On information.

- Open Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display.
- Turn off Show Wallpaper.
The wallpaper will no longer appear in the Always-On view, while other information can remain visible. Apple documents this control in its Always-On Display guide.
Turn off the Always-On Lock Screen entirely
If you want the display to go dark after locking the iPhone, use the same settings page and switch off Always On Display. This is different from turning off Show Wallpaper: the latter hides the wallpaper while retaining Always-On information; the former disables the persistent Lock Screen view.

Check whether your iPhone supports Always-On Display
Always-On Display is available only on supported models. Apple’s current support documentation lists iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, and iPhone 17 models. Apple says Always-On Display is off by default on iPhone Air. Model availability can change, so check whether Always On Display appears under Settings > Display & Brightness on your device. If it is not there, the Show Wallpaper control will not be available. See Apple’s Always-On Display support page for its compatibility details.
If the entire screen looks too dark, adjust brightness
A dim wallpaper on the locked Always-On screen is not the same as low brightness across the display. For whole-screen dimming, change brightness using Control Center or open Settings > Display & Brightness and adjust the brightness slider.

To check automatic adjustment, go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness. iPhone uses its ambient light sensor to adjust brightness to surrounding conditions. Apple notes that turning Auto-Brightness off may increase power consumption. The Apple display settings guide covers brightness, Auto-Brightness, Dark Mode, and Night Shift.
Distinguish appearance and Focus settings from wallpaper dimming
Dark Mode changes the system’s appearance. A compatible wallpaper may also offer a light or dark appearance choice in Lock Screen customization, and a Lock Screen can be linked to a Focus. These controls affect appearance or which Lock Screen is active; they do not replace the Always-On Display Show Wallpaper setting.

To inspect Lock Screen and Focus options, touch and hold the Lock Screen to open the wallpaper gallery. Apple explains Lock Screen customization and Focus linking in its Lock Screen guide. Wallpaper appearance controls are separate from the Always-On wallpaper toggle.
Know when Always-On Display turns off automatically
Always-On Display does not remain visible in every circumstance. Apple says it can turn off when the iPhone is face down or obstructed, is away from a paired Apple Watch, is using CarPlay or Continuity Camera, or when Low Power Mode or Sleep Focus is on. It can also turn off at the user’s usual bedtime. These behaviors affect whether the Always-On screen is shown; they are not a way to adjust the wallpaper’s appearance.

Consider heat if brightness drops temporarily
If the entire display becomes dim and brightness cannot be raised as expected, heat may be a factor. Apple says an iPhone can dim its display and reduce maximum brightness temporarily until it cools. This is separate from the Always-On wallpaper setting; see Apple’s guidance on keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable operating temperatures.

What to check if the setting does not match what you see
- Clock and other Lock Screen information remain visible, but the wallpaper is dim: check Show Wallpaper in the Always-On Display settings.
- The whole screen looks dark: check manual brightness and Auto-Brightness rather than the wallpaper toggle.
- The Always-On Display setting is missing: check your model’s support and the iOS version installed; the feature is model-dependent.
- The screen sometimes goes dark or changes with a Focus: check the conditions that automatically turn off Always-On Display and whether a Focus is linked to a different Lock Screen.
Dimming by itself does not establish that the iPhone is defective. If the options or behavior differ, identify the iPhone model and iOS version, and note whether only the wallpaper or the entire display changes.
