Start with Settings > Battery: check Battery Suggestions and Insights, then see which apps and activities used the most power. The five settings below are a practical checklist—not an official Apple ranking, and not five switches that drain every iPhone. Change only what fits the usage shown on your device; Apple does not promise a universal battery-life gain from any single adjustment.
Check what used power before changing settings
Battery life varies with how you use your iPhone and which apps you use. In Settings > Battery, review Battery Suggestions and Insights above Daily Usage, then inspect App and System Activity Usage. Depending on your iOS version, details can identify screen-on use, background activity, cellular coverage, or notifications that woke the phone. On iOS 26 or later, Daily Usage compares the current day with the previous seven days. Apple’s battery-drain guide and its explanation of battery usage and health describe these diagnostics.

If one app or activity stands out, target that cause rather than disabling features across the phone. A weak cellular signal can also raise battery use; use Wi-Fi or a stronger signal when practical. If you expect to be without coverage for a while, Airplane Mode can prevent repeated attempts to connect. For supported 5G devices, 5G Auto can switch to LTE when 5G would not noticeably improve the experience.
After setting up an iPhone or installing an iOS update, background tasks can temporarily affect battery life and temperature. If Battery Insights indicates setup or update activity, give it a few days and check again before treating the change as a persistent settings problem.

Which settings are worth checking?
Use the Battery screen as your evidence, and weigh any convenience you would lose before changing a feature. Apple’s guidance identifies these settings and activities as relevant troubleshooting targets, but does not rank them by savings or provide a guaranteed percentage improvement.

1. Reduce unnecessary screen brightness
Apple says high screen brightness consumes a lot of energy. If the screen is consistently brighter than you need, dim it in Control Center or let Auto-Brightness adjust it to ambient light. Auto-Brightness is on by default, but you can check it at Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness. Apple may also show a Battery suggestion to enable Auto-Brightness or reduce brightness when its conditions warrant it. See Apple’s brightness and color temperature instructions.

2. Set Auto-Lock to a practical interval
If your screen stays lit after you put the phone down, shorten the time before it locks: Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock. Choose the shortest interval that still works for how you use the phone. A managed device or software version may affect the available setting. Low Power Mode sets Auto-Lock to 30 seconds, so the interval may change while that mode is active.

3. Limit Background App Refresh selectively
Background App Refresh lets suspended apps check for new content. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh, then choose whether background refresh is available over Wi-Fi and cellular data, Wi-Fi only, or not at all. You can also restrict apps whose background updates are unnecessary or whose activity appears in Battery usage. The trade-off is that some content may not be current until you open the app. Apple explains the feature in its guide to switching apps.

Do not force-quit every app as a battery fix. Apple says closing all apps does not improve overall performance when the battery drains too quickly; recently used apps generally use resources when active or performing a specific background task or service.
4. Review location access and notifications for the app involved
Battery usage details may identify background activity such as location tracking, or show that notifications woke the device. If a particular app is implicated, check whether it needs location access or frequent alerts. Adjust that app’s permission or notification settings rather than turning off Location Services or notifications for everything. Navigation, safety features, tracking, and timely alerts may depend on them, and Apple does not state a specific amount of battery savings from disabling a particular app permission.

5. Use Low Power Mode when you need a broad, temporary change
Low Power Mode is a bundled option, not one hidden setting. On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode. On iPhone 14 and earlier, open Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode. Apple’s instructions were published October 1, 2026; the path varies by model generation.

Is Adaptive Power available on your iPhone?
For iOS 26 or later, Apple lists Adaptive Power support on iPhone 17 models, iPhone Air, iPhone 16 models, and iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. It is on by default on iPhone 17 models and iPhone Air, and off by default on iPhone 16 models and iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max. Apple says it needs at least seven days to learn charging habits. When active, it can slightly lower brightness, limit background activity, make performance adjustments, and turn on Low Power Mode at 20%. Check your model and software before looking for the setting; Apple’s Adaptive Power guide has the current details.
When settings changes are not the answer
Check Settings > Battery > Battery Health (the exact label can vary by model and iOS version). If Battery Health displays Service, Apple recommends considering battery replacement through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Settings adjustments can reduce avoidable power use, but they do not repair a degraded battery.
