There is no single parental-control setting that filters every ad inside every mobile game. Report the ad when possible, use platform controls to block the game if it remains unsuitable, and consider an ad-free alternative only if the specific game offers one. Airplane mode may help with a game that works offline, but it is not a universal ad blocker.
What to do when an unsuitable ad appears
- Use the game’s ad-reporting option, if available. Apple’s UK App Review Guidelines say apps with ads must let users report inappropriate or age-inappropriate ads. The route and applicable wording can vary by storefront and region.
- Report the app or game to its store. On Google Play, open the game’s store listing, choose the option to flag it, and select the relevant reason. Google advises parents to report ads that do not suit the age group the game was designed for. A report asks for review; it does not immediately remove the ad from the device. Google Play’s parent guide explains reporting and notes that ads can change over time.
- Block or uninstall the game if the ads continue. Family Link can block a child’s app and manage app limits. Blocking prevents access to the game; it does not filter ad creatives while the child keeps playing. See Google’s instructions for managing a child’s Google Play apps.
What parental controls can—and cannot—do
Family Link and similar parental controls can help manage app access, time, age-rated downloads, and spending. They are not reliable filters for every ad shown during gameplay. The FTC notes that most parental controls do not have dedicated settings for ads shown during searching, downloading, or playing games. FTC guidance on kids and video games describes these limits.

Turning off personalized advertising should not be treated as a fix: ad-personalization settings concern targeting, and the cited guidance does not establish that they block all unsuitable ad content.
Choose the remedy that fits the game

Compare options by whether your child can keep playing, whether ads are actually removed, cost, and whether the game works offline. The FTC’s guidance on game ads and unexpected payments also recommends using parental controls to disable in-app purchases or require a password. Google Play purchase approvals apply to purchases made through Google Play billing; they should not be assumed to cover every payment route inside every app.

Check a game before allowing play
- Read both positive and negative store reviews, and look for an explicit ad-free label.
- Play or observe the game yourself before handing it to a child.
- Recheck periodically: the ads served in a game can change, so one review or one viewing is not a lasting guarantee.
What Google Play and Apple’s rules mean for families
Google Play’s Families requirements place obligations on developers: ads shown to children or users of unknown age must be appropriate for children and cannot use interest-based advertising or remarketing. The listed unsuitable categories include sexual or suggestive content, dating, graphic violence, simulated gambling and sweepstakes, harmful substances, and certain media, games, or software. The rules also restrict deceptive ad formats and set conditions for dismissing ads. These requirements do not guarantee that an unsuitable ad will never slip through. Google Play also requires ads and associated offers, including offers to download another app, to be appropriate for the game’s content rating. This is a developer requirement, not a real-time filter that parents can enable. Google provides a store-listing route to flag an app that appears inappropriate. See Google Play’s ad guidance.

Apple’s cited App Review Guidelines page is the UK regional version. It says ads must suit an app’s age rating and apps containing ads must allow users to report inappropriate or age-inappropriate ads. Check the current guidelines for the relevant storefront: Apple App Review Guidelines (UK).
