Choose whether you want to block an action or review a request before it goes through—those are different protections.
Choose between blocking and approval
- Block: The selected restriction prevents a covered action, such as making in-app purchases.
- Require approval: Your child can request a covered download or purchase, and a parent can review it. Approval settings do not necessarily cover every kind of transaction or every billing method.
Use the account-based instructions for the platform below. Menus and availability can vary with software version, account setup, and region, so consult the linked official guidance if a label differs on your device.

iPhone or iPad: use Apple Family Sharing and Screen Time
Require approval with Ask to Buy
For a child in Family Sharing, the family organizer or a parent/guardian can enable Ask to Buy from their own Apple device. On a current iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Family, tap the child’s name, then go to Apps & Websites > Restrictions > Ask to Buy and turn on Require Purchase Approval. Apple documents this workflow for eligible App Store app downloads and in-app purchases. If approved, the item downloads to the child’s device. See Apple’s Ask to Buy instructions.

The child needs their own Apple Account in the Family Sharing group, and Family Sharing must be set up. Apple also advises updating family devices so settings sync. Ask to Buy does not request approval when a child redownloads their own prior purchase, installs an update, or uses a redemption code. Depending on the child’s country or region and account circumstances, Ask to Buy may be on by default and may not be switchable for a child under 18.

Block in-app purchases with Screen Time
To prevent in-app purchases rather than review requests, first turn on Screen Time. Then open Settings > Screen Time > Apps & Websites > App Store > In-app Purchases and choose Blocked. Apple’s instruction is explicit: “To prevent Apple In-App Purchases, you need to turn on Screen Time first.” See Apple’s Screen Time purchase-control guide.
Apple also documents app installation and deletion controls under Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases. Depending on the iOS or iPadOS release, labels and paths can differ; follow the current Settings labels or Apple’s App Store restrictions guide to restrict installing or deleting apps and in-app purchases.

Android or Chromebook: supervise the account with Family Link
Check device and account eligibility
Family Link is Google’s tool for supervising a child’s Google Account and managing apps and Google Play content on eligible devices. Google’s current help page lists Android 6.0 or later and ChromeOS 71 or later as child-device baselines. Family Link does not supervise iPhones, iPads, or non-Chromebook computers. Review Google’s Family Link eligibility and controls before setup.

- Play Store: Open the profile menu, then Settings > Family > Manage family members. Select the child and open Purchase approvals.
- Family Link: Select the child, then open Controls > Google Play > Require approval for.
Choose the purchase scope available in your interface. Google’s documented options include all content, paid content or purchases using the family payment method, in-app purchases only, and never/no approval. Labels and routes can vary. The official Google Play purchase-approval instructions describe the current settings.
Know which payments Google Play approval covers
Google Play purchase approvals apply only to transactions processed through Google Play billing. They do not control or authenticate a developer’s alternative in-app payment system. A Family Link approval may still be required to download an app, but payment made through an alternative billing route is outside Google Play purchase controls. If the device is shared or not supervised through Family Link
Google Play also has local parental controls that filter content by maturity rating. These settings apply to the Android device where they are enabled; they do not necessarily hide restricted content from search results or prevent access through a direct link. They are not a substitute for supervising a child’s Google Account and do not create the same approval workflow. See Google’s guide to parental controls on Google Play.

Troubleshoot missing controls or unexpected purchases
- Confirm the child’s account: Ask to Buy depends on the child’s Apple Account being in Family Sharing; Google purchase approvals depend on a supervised child account and the family manager or parent role.
- Check the device and software: Make sure the device meets the relevant platform requirements and family devices are updated where Apple settings need to sync.
- Check the purchase channel: Google Play approvals cover Google Play billing, not a developer’s alternative payment system.
- Check what action occurred: An Apple update, redemption-code use, or redownload of a prior purchase does not trigger Ask to Buy.
- Recheck region and menus: Account age, country or region, and software release can affect availability and labels. Use the official Apple or Google help page linked above for the child’s setup.
