How to Stop Google Voice Search or Docs Voice Typing from Using Your Microphone

There is no single desktop-wide Google microphone switch. Find the right fix for browser voice search, a misselected microphone, Docs voice typing, or saved account audio.

There is no single universal “Google desktop app” microphone switch established by Google’s desktop documentation. For voice search in Google Search, check both the browser’s permission for the Google site and your operating system’s microphone privacy permission for the browser; if it uses the wrong mic, select the intended input in the browser. Google Docs voice typing has a separate “Stop listening” command, while Google Account audio-history controls affect saved recordings—not live microphone access.

First, identify which Google feature is listening

On a computer, “Google app” can refer to different things. The available desktop guidance distinguishes browser-based Google Search voice search from Google Docs voice typing. Google’s general Google app permissions page is for Android, so it does not establish a desktop-wide microphone setting. The steps below apply to the feature you are actually using.

  • Google Search in a browser: adjust the Google site’s microphone permission, the browser’s selected input device, or the operating system’s permission for that browser.
  • Google Docs voice typing: stop the Docs feature with its voice command.
  • Audio saved to your Google Account: review Voice and Audio Activity controls separately; these concern recording retention, not permission to use a live microphone.

Stop or restore microphone access for Google Search in a browser

Browser-based voice search may depend on more than one permission layer: the browser must allow the Google site to use the microphone, and the operating system must allow the browser to access it. Community support responses describe these checks, but exact settings names and locations can vary by browser and operating-system version. Google Search Community troubleshooting

  1. Check the Google site permission in your browser. Open the browser’s site information or privacy settings for the Google Search page and make sure microphone access is allowed. If you want to stop voice search, change that site permission to block or deny. If voice search has disappeared or prompts for access, allow it instead.
  2. Check the operating system’s microphone privacy permission. Confirm that microphone access is enabled for the browser. A browser-level site permission cannot override an operating-system setting that blocks the browser.
  3. Retry voice search. Revisit Google Search and respond to any permission prompt according to whether you want voice search enabled. If the setting was just changed, reload the page and test again.

Windows

A Google Search Community response points Windows users to the system setting that allows desktop apps to access the microphone, as well as browser and site permissions. Look in Windows microphone privacy settings and confirm the browser is permitted; Windows labels may differ by release. Google Search Community troubleshooting

macOS

A community troubleshooting thread describes checking System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone for the browser, in addition to the browser’s permission for the Google site. The precise label can vary by macOS version. Google Chrome Community discussion

Choose the correct microphone when Google Search uses the wrong one

If voice search works but picks up audio from the wrong device, permission is not the same as input selection. Check the browser’s microphone input setting and choose the intended device—for example, the headset rather than a built-in microphone. Google Search Community troubleshooting identifies browser microphone selection as a separate check; the available guidance does not establish one universal menu path for every browser. Stop voice typing in Google Docs

Google’s Accessibility Help says the browser controls the speech-to-text service used for Docs voice typing. To stop the Docs feature while it is active, say “Stop listening.” This stops voice typing in Docs; Google’s instructions do not say it disables microphone access for other sites or applications. Control saved audio separately in your Google Account

Google says Voice and Audio Activity is optional and off unless enabled. Turning it off stops saving the described Assistant interaction recordings to your Google Account, but it does not prevent all audio processing when you speak to Google services. It also does not delete recordings already saved; Google says you can review and delete them in Web & App Activity. Google notes that the settings described are being updated, so labels may differ. Google Assistant Help: Control what you share with Google Assistant

Use this control when your concern is whether specified recordings are retained in your account. To block a browser-based Google Search page from accessing the live microphone, change the browser or operating-system permission instead.
