To stop Google from saving activity to your account, open Manage your Google Account → Data & privacy → History settings and turn off Web & App Activity. If your account shows a separate Search Services History control, turn that off too. Review Timeline separately to stop Google Maps from saving visits and routes. Turning off a setting does not automatically erase records already saved; choose a deletion option or remove them separately if you want them gone.
Which Google setting should you turn off?
Google’s history controls cover different kinds of records. Use the control that matches what you want to stop; disabling one does not necessarily disable the others.

Turn off Google search and app activity
- Sign in to the Google Account you use for Search and Google apps. If you use several accounts, check which one is active: Google says signed-in activity may be saved to the account in use across devices, and activity may go to the default account when multiple accounts are signed in.
- Open Manage your Google Account → Data & privacy → History settings. Select Web & App Activity and turn it off.
- If you see a separate Search Services History setting, review it and turn it off as well. The new control is rolling out gradually. If it is not available in your account, Google says search history and personalized recommendations remain controlled by Web & App Activity.
- Review any additional options on the Web & App Activity screen, including Chrome history, activity from sites, apps, and devices that use Google services, and audio recordings. The options shown can vary by account.
- If you also want to remove past activity, choose Turn off and delete activity if offered and follow the prompts. Otherwise, open My Activity and delete selected items or a time range.
Google Account Help says these settings can be changed on a phone or tablet to control most activity saved in an account. Labels and screens may differ as Google updates the interface. See Google’s activity settings guide and Google Search Help.
Stop Google Maps from saving visits and routes
- In your Google Account’s activity settings, open Timeline.
- Turn Timeline off to stop saving visits and routes through that setting.
- If you want existing Timeline records removed, use Timeline’s controls to delete all history or selected dates.
- Check the eligible devices where Timeline data may be stored, along with applicable backup settings.
Timeline is a separate control from Web & App Activity and Search Services History. Turning it off or deleting Timeline data does not necessarily remove location-related information associated with other Google services, general or IP-derived location, or location metadata in photos. Delete activity Google has already saved
Turning off a history control limits future saving under that control; deleting activity is a separate action. Use Turn off and delete activity when the option appears, or go to My Activity to remove particular items or a chosen time period. Google describes deletion as a process that starts removing data from its products and systems, but says limited information may be retained for business or legal needs. It is not a promise that every related record disappears immediately or from every location. See Google’s activity deletion instructions.
Some records are stored outside My Activity. Clear Chrome or another browser’s history through that browser’s own settings, and manage activity held in a specific Google product through that product if it is not covered by the account activity controls.

Does Incognito stop Google from saving searches?
Google Search Help says search history is not saved to your Google Account when you search and browse in Incognito mode. However, signing in to a Google Account in a private window may still cause account activity to be saved. Incognito does not delete records already saved to your account, and it does not automatically clear browser history after a session. See Google Search Help and Google Account Help.
