To continue, solve the reCAPTCHA; if it keeps returning, check whether the cause is your device, another device on the same network, a VPN or IPv6 tunnel, or your internet provider.
Why Google asks for a CAPTCHA in Chrome
This prompt is Google Search’s response to traffic it considers unusual—not a CAPTCHA feature controlled by Chrome. Google says it may appear when a network, including one using a VPN, seems to send automated traffic. That can involve activity from another person or device sharing the connection; the prompt alone does not prove that your computer is infected.

These steps apply to Google Search’s unusual-traffic message. Other websites use their own CAPTCHA systems, so their causes and available controls may differ.
How to continue when the CAPTCHA appears
Complete the reCAPTCHA shown on the Google Search page. Google Search Help says to solve it to confirm you are a person; after you pass it, the warning should go away and you can use Google again. Google does not document a Chrome setting to disable this challenge. Google Search Help: Resolve Google Search’s “Unusual traffic from your computer network” message.

What to check if the CAPTCHA keeps coming back
Start with the connection and devices using it. Google lists several possible sources of automated-looking traffic, but the warning does not identify which one applies to you.
- VPN or IPv6 tunnel: If you use one, check whether the prompt is associated with that connection. Contact the VPN provider if the issue continues.
- Other devices on the network: Consider whether another person or device sharing the connection could be generating automated searches. If you can, compare what happens on another device using the same connection and on the affected device using a different connection. This comparison can help distinguish a device-specific issue from a network-wide one; it does not identify the cause by itself.
- Possible malware: Google names malware as one possibility and recommends checking for it. A CAPTCHA alone is not evidence that malware is present.
- Managed network or provider: On a work or school connection, ask the network administrator or IT professional to investigate. If the issue remains after checking your local network, contact your internet provider.
Google’s guidance does not identify clearing browser data, changing your IP address, resetting a router, installing an extension, or switching to a VPN as a universal or permanent fix.

If the challenge will not load or cannot be completed
Check browser compatibility and JavaScript before treating a missing or broken challenge as a traffic problem. Google’s reCAPTCHA guidance recommends using an updated, supported browser, enabling JavaScript, and trying to disable plugins that may conflict. See Google reCAPTCHA Help for its browser and plugin guidance.
If you are also having trouble signing in to a Google Account, Google’s separate sign-in guidance recommends checking JavaScript in Chrome and temporarily turning off extensions that may block sign-in. These are sign-in troubleshooting steps, not a guaranteed fix for a Search CAPTCHA. See Google Account Help: Sign in with a supported browser.

Contact the person responsible for the connection when the prompt appears across devices on a shared work, school, or other managed network.
