How to Stop FFmpeg from Repeating the Same Cartoon in a 24/7 YouTube Stream

If FFmpeg repeats one cartoon, it may be looping a single-file input. Learn how to loop a concat playlist, check transitions and diagnose a 24/7 YouTube stream.

If FFmpeg keeps showing the same cartoon, first check which input you told it to loop. -stream_loop -1 repeats the input immediately after it; if that input is one video, that video repeats forever. To rotate through several cartoons, put them in a concat-demuxer playlist and loop the playlist input instead.

The examples below show the option placement and setup, but they are schematic: without your command, file list and FFmpeg version, it is not possible to identify the exact cause on your system.

Choose what FFmpeg should repeat

FFmpeg applies input options to the input that follows them. So -stream_loop -1 placed before a single video’s -i tells FFmpeg to loop that video indefinitely. It does not mean “play every file in this folder.” To cycle through multiple files, make the playlist the input that receives the loop option.

  • One cartoon should repeat: loop the video file itself.
  • Several cartoons should play in sequence: loop a playlist containing those files.
  • The playlist is correct but one cartoon still repeats: check the input order, playlist paths and stream mapping, then check whether an outside process is restarting FFmpeg with that single file.

Loop one cartoon indefinitely

For a prerecorded video, a schematic RTMPS command looks like this:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i cartoon.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac
  -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'

Replace cartoon.mp4 with your file and replace the placeholder destination with the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Do not publish or share a real stream key: YouTube treats it as a credential. The example is not a tested, one-size-fits-all encoding command; choose output settings that match your source, desired quality, available processing capacity and upload connection. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance for the stream URL and key.

-stream_loop is an input option, so keep it before the relevant -i. Its value -1 requests infinite looping. -re reads prerecorded media at its native rate to pace it for live output. FFmpeg cautions against using -re with an actual live input, where it can cause packet loss.

Loop a playlist instead of one file

1. Create a concat playlist

Make a text file named playlist.ffconcat and list the files in the order you want them to play:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'cartoon-01.mp4'
file 'cartoon-02.mp4'
file 'cartoon-03.mp4'

Use paths that resolve from the directory where FFmpeg runs, or provide appropriate paths to the files. The ffconcat header must be the first line. Keep this playlist under your control if you use the unsafe-path option below.

2. Use the playlist as the looped input

A schematic command is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac
  -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'

Here, -stream_loop -1 is before -i playlist.ffconcat, so the playlist—not an individual cartoon—is the input being repeated. The concat demuxer presents the files as though their packets had been joined together. -safe 0 permits paths the demuxer would otherwise reject as unsafe; use it only with a playlist you created and trust. See the FFmpeg documentation on the concat demuxer.

3. Check compatibility and transitions

The concat demuxer works best when the files have matching streams, codecs and time bases. Different formats or stream layouts can make concatenation fail or produce unexpected transitions. Duration inaccuracies can also create boundary artifacts. If the files are not compatible, normalize them first or use FFmpeg’s concat filter and re-encode as needed; the filter is a different approach from stream-copy concatenation. The FFmpeg concatenation FAQ explains the distinction.

A playlist loop does not make every transition seamless. Check the resulting video and audio at file boundaries, including the transition from the last item back to the first. If a visible or audible pause is acceptable, a simple playlist may be sufficient; if transitions must be continuous, source compatibility and timestamp behavior need particular attention.

Set YouTube ingest and encoder settings

Use the current stream URL and key

Get the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room and use the values for the stream you intend to start. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the feed between the encoder and Google’s servers. Keep the key private, and check the configured URL and key if YouTube does not receive the stream. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and live stream settings.

Match output quality to the source and connection

YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked in 2026, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For H.264, its current table lists these examples:

Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube’s guidance values, not guarantees of a stable stream. Choose the bitrate row for the codec, resolution and frame rate you are actually sending, and make sure your sustained upload capacity can support it. YouTube advises testing with representative motion and audio and monitoring stream health; check its current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions before configuring a live broadcast.

Diagnose why the same cartoon keeps appearing

  1. Mark every input. Read the complete FFmpeg command and identify each -i. Input options apply to the following input, so verify which one has -stream_loop -1 before it.
  2. Confirm what that input contains. If it is a single cartoon file, repeating that cartoon is the expected result. If you intended a playlist, confirm the command points to the playlist file.
  3. Inspect the playlist itself. Check its entries, ordering, spelling and path resolution. Make sure each listed path identifies the intended file and that the process can access it.
  4. Check input selection and mapping. If the playlist has several entries but output appears to contain only one, inspect which input FFmpeg is using and which streams the command maps.
  5. Look outside FFmpeg. A shell script, service manager or container may restart FFmpeg with the same single file after the process exits. That restart behavior is separate from FFmpeg’s input loop.
  6. Review timestamps and compatibility. If transitions fail or show artifacts, check the source streams, codecs, time bases and duration behavior. Use the concat filter and re-encode when the sources need normalization rather than assuming the demuxer can join them cleanly.
  7. Check pacing and YouTube ingest. Use -re for prerecorded input, not an actual live source. In Live Control Room, confirm the ingest URL and key, wait for the preview and monitor stream health.

What looping does—and does not—keep running

-stream_loop -1 controls media repetition; it does not by itself supervise the FFmpeg process, keep a computer or network connection available, or guarantee that YouTube will maintain the broadcast. For 24/7 operation, treat the media loop, process supervision, host and connection reliability, and YouTube ingest as separate parts of the setup.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when created with an encoder. That statement does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will be preserved as a single complete archive. Confirm archive behavior for your channel and workflow in YouTube’s encoder stream setup guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded cartoons without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the looping stream in the cloud. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home for the stream to keep going.
  • Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, once per account.

The monthly option is $9.99 per month. To try the cloud setup, start a StreamNeo account.
