FFmpeg processes the inputs supplied to it; it does not enumerate a YouTube playlist for you. For a playlist URL, use a playlist-aware tool such as yt-dlp to select and download the entries, then use FFmpeg to merge or process them. If you already have separate media URLs or files, pass each intended item to FFmpeg as a distinct, correctly ordered input.
First identify what is repeating
A command may involve yt-dlp, FFmpeg, or both, and the fix depends on which one is choosing the videos. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes processing inputs supplied with -i. yt-dlp’s options documentation covers playlist enumeration and item selection.

- If yt-dlp is downloading only one entry, inspect the URL and yt-dlp selection options.
- If FFmpeg receives repeated copies of the same URL or file, correct the inputs or the process that builds that list.
- If the same files appear again on a later run, distinguish that from repetition within one run; yt-dlp’s download archive addresses repeat downloads across runs, not incorrect selection during a run.
Choose the right workflow for a YouTube playlist
Use yt-dlp to enumerate a playlist
Give yt-dlp the playlist URL when your goal is to retrieve multiple playlist entries. You can then use FFmpeg to merge separate audio and video formats or process the downloaded files. This keeps playlist selection and media processing as separate tasks.
- Check the installed version with
yt-dlp --version. - Use the playlist URL, rather than a watch URL that may refer to one video with playlist context.
- For a small test, select a few entries with
--playlist-items 1-3and inspect their titles or IDs. Confirm the entries are distinct before processing the full playlist. - Remove any unintended
--playlist-itemsrestriction if you want the full playlist. That option deliberately selects positions. - Use an output template that records each item’s playlist position, such as
%(playlist)s/%(playlist_index)s - %(title)s.%(ext)s. The index makes missing or duplicated entries easier to spot.
For example, a diagnostic command can be structured as yt-dlp --playlist-items 1-3 -o "%(playlist)s/%(playlist_index)s - %(title)s.%(ext)s" "PLAYLIST_URL". Replace PLAYLIST_URL with the actual playlist URL. This checks selection and naming; it does not itself invoke FFmpeg.

Use –no-playlist for one video with playlist context
A YouTube watch URL can include playlist information even when you intend to retrieve only the specific video. In yt-dlp, --no-playlist selects that video alone when the URL refers to both a video and a playlist. Use it for the single-video case, not when you want every playlist entry.
When FFmpeg receives the inputs directly
If an existing pipeline supplies individual media URLs or files, ensure the intended playlist entries are represented by separate inputs and appear in the intended order. Inspect every -i argument: a repeated first URL or a list generator that returns the same item will make FFmpeg process that repeated input. FFmpeg’s options generally apply to the next input or output, and input/output options reset between files, so option placement matters. A generic loop option will not correct a URL or input list that selects the wrong item.

Use this workflow when another component already provides the individual items and your script controls the list. Use yt-dlp for playlist enumeration when starting from a YouTube playlist URL. The correct diagnosis depends on the command and URL; neither workflow can be guaranteed to fix an unknown command without inspecting them.

Stop downloading the same videos on later runs
If the first run downloaded distinct entries but rerunning the command downloads them again, yt-dlp’s --download-archive can record successfully downloaded video IDs and skip those entries on later runs. Keep the archive file stable between runs. It does not change which item a malformed or incorrectly selected input repeats during a single run.
