How to find where cold air is coming in
Start with the door or window closed. On an exterior door, look for daylight around the edges and check whether it feels loose in its frame. A loose hinge, knob, or strike plate can prevent a good seal, so adjust those before buying weatherstripping. Measure the sides and top of the door, and the bottom if you are fitting a sweep.

For a window, close it on a piece of paper. If the paper slides out easily, the sash may need thicker weatherstripping. You can also watch smoke from an incense stick beside the seam: movement in one direction can indicate air leakage. An LED smoke pencil or professional assessment avoids the open-flame hazard. These checks are clues, not a substitute for a whole-home energy assessment. ENERGY STAR describes both checks in its window and door trim guidance.

Daylight, rattling, dust, pests, or outside odors can also point to gaps. But a cold spot near a window does not prove that the window is the home’s largest source of heat loss. Significant leaks may be hidden in the attic or basement; see ENERGY STAR’s guide to locating air leaks.

Choose a fix that matches the gap
| Leak location | Suitable first fix | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Movable window sash or door seam | Weatherstripping designed for the gap and surface | Close the opening securely without stopping it from operating. |
| Bottom of an exterior door | Door sweep | Size it to the door; it should seal without dragging enough to impede operation. |
| Suitable stationary crack | Caulk, with backer rod where appropriate | Do not caulk a sash or other joint that must move. ENERGY STAR’s project guide describes caulk for gaps a quarter inch or less. |
| Gap between jamb and rough framing | Low-expansion foam made for windows and doors, caulk with backer rod, or carefully placed fiberglass with an air-sealing layer | Usually requires exposing the opening; careless foam application can deform the frame. |
| Seasonal window draft | Shrink-to-fit plastic window film kit | A temporary covering, not a repair to the underlying leak; may interfere with mini-blinds. |
Weatherstrip movable joints; sweep the door bottom
Use weatherstripping made for the opening and the size of the gap. For an exterior door, a properly fitted weatherstripping set and/or sweep can reduce infiltration. After fitting, open and close the door to make sure it still works smoothly. The Department of Energy’s June 2024 exterior-door job aid states the goal: “Reduce air infiltration while maintaining or improving proper operation of the door.” Read the DOE door weatherstripping job aid.
Use window film as a seasonal measure
A shrink-to-fit plastic film kit can reduce drafts and make a room feel warmer; ENERGY STAR also says it can reduce condensation moisture on the window. Follow the kit directions: clean the frame, apply the tape and film with extra material around the window, then use a hair dryer to tighten the film. Remove it after winter. The film can block mini-blind operation, so check that before installing. The ENERGY STAR film project guide describes the materials and steps; it does not promise a specific reduction in energy bills.

Reserve caulk and foam for fixed gaps
Caulk is for suitable small, stationary cracks—not a sash that needs to slide or a door joint that needs to move. Sealing behind trim or in the gap between a jamb and rough framing is more involved than applying surface weatherstripping. If trim must come off, use only low-expansion foam labeled for windows and doors, and apply it carefully so the frame does not bow and bind. Fibrous insulation alone does not block airflow. See the ENERGY STAR guidance on identifying problems and the DOE’s rough-opening air-sealing guidance.
Keep safety and whole-home priorities in view
If the home was built before 1978, or the job disturbs painted trim, lead paint may be a concern. Consult EPA lead-safe renovation resources before disturbing painted surfaces; complicated trim or hazardous lead-paint work is a reason to use a qualified professional. ENERGY STAR also warns that extensive air sealing can contribute to combustion appliances such as water heaters backdrafting, and can trap pollutants including radon, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds. A tighter home may need mechanical ventilation. Professional inspection and testing can help identify combustion-related risks before extensive sealing; see ENERGY STAR’s safety guidance.

For whole-home energy and comfort, ENERGY STAR ranks attic air sealing as generally the highest-potential project and recommends sealing the attic before adding insulation; basement or crawlspace work is commonly next. Window, door, and wall leaks can create uncomfortable drafts and are accessible DIY projects, but usually have less impact on energy use. The ranking is qualitative, and results vary with climate and the home’s age, construction, and condition. See ENERGY STAR’s assessment of project opportunities.
