Before troubleshooting: identify the model
Look for the model number on the machine’s label, then find that model’s manual and manufacturer support page. Follow button sequences, reset instructions, and supply recommendations only when they are specified for your machine. Electronic typewriters do not all use the same ribbon cartridge, correction system, printwheel, or paper-release control.

Why is the typewriter not printing, or is the print faint?
Check the ribbon and printwheel
For the Brother models covered by its printing support article, check that the daisywheel is locked in its forward position and see whether the ribbon moves as you type. Brother identifies a silver ribbon as exhausted and says to replace it. These instructions are for the models covered by that support article, not all electronic typewriters.

The WPT-160 manual lists an exhausted ribbon, incorrect installation, and unremoved protective shipping tabs on a new ribbon as possible causes of faint or absent characters. Check that model’s ribbon installation and remove any shipping tabs before reinstalling or replacing the ribbon.
Confirm supply compatibility
Buy a replacement only after checking the exact machine model and the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance. Ribbon, correction tape, and printwheels are model-dependent; a supply that fits one typewriter may not fit another.

Why are characters wrong, faintly aligned, or misaligned?
Brother lists wrong-character typing as a separate support issue in its model-filtered support results. For the WPT-160, the manual associates poor or misaligned print with an incorrectly installed or damaged printwheel, or dirt near the print head. Check the printwheel’s installation against the manual; the WPT-160 instructions suggest gentle cleaning with a soft, dry cloth. Do not open or adjust another model based on this guidance.

Why will paper not feed or advance?
For the WPT-160, insert paper straight, align it with the guides, and lower the paper-bail rollers. If paper is jammed, remove it carefully. Consult that model’s manual for the correct loading and jam-clearing method.

Brother support results mention the paper-release lever and a model-specific reset sequence as checks for some Brother machines. Use a reset only if the manual for your exact model gives that procedure; do not copy a sequence from another typewriter.
What if keys do not work, the carriage is stuck, or the machine makes noise?
Brother’s support listings treat nonworking keys, a stuck carriage, and continuous grinding or beeping as distinct problems. One listed procedure advises unplugging the machine, inspecting accessible areas, and removing objects that may have fallen inside. Keep the inspection to obvious foreign objects; these instructions do not support internal electrical repairs. If the symptom continues, consult the model’s manual or arrange service.

When should you stop and get service?
For the Brother models covered by its hammer troubleshooting guidance, turn the machine off, check that the daisywheel is locked forward, then power on and test. If the hammer still does not move, Brother says the machine requires service.
