To reduce Chrome’s memory use without closing every tab, update Chrome, close unused tabs and other demanding apps, then enable Memory Saver under Settings > Performance. For a specific runaway tab or background task, use Chrome’s Task Manager to identify it before ending it. These steps are for desktop Chrome; Google says performance personalization isn’t available on Android or iOS.
First identify what is slowing down
“Chrome is using too much RAM” can mean different things: Chrome occupies a large share of memory in the computer’s task manager, one tab is slow or crashing, or the whole computer feels sluggish. Start with the simplest workload changes, then inspect Chrome’s own processes if the problem continues. Google does not publish a universal RAM limit or a guaranteed amount of memory that Memory Saver will free.
Free memory without losing all your tabs
- Update Chrome. Open More > Help > About Google Chrome and install an update if one is offered, then relaunch if prompted.
- Close tabs you no longer need and quit other memory-heavy programs. If Chrome says it cannot load a page because of insufficient memory, pause downloads, free memory, then try loading the page again.
- Enable Memory Saver. Open More > Settings > Performance, switch on Memory Saver, and select a level. Google Chrome Help explains: “To save your computer’s memory and help active tabs run smoothly, Chrome deactivates tabs that you aren’t currently using.”
Choose how aggressively inactive tabs are deactivated
| Memory Saver setting | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Moderate | Waits longer before deactivating inactive tabs, so they are less likely to reload when you return. |
| Balanced (recommended) | Google’s recommended compromise between conserving memory and keeping tabs readily available. |
| Maximum | Deactivates inactive tabs sooner to prioritize memory savings; expect to reload them more often when you reopen them. |
An inactive tab may reload when you select it again. Some activity can prevent deactivation, including audio or video playback, calls, screen sharing, notifications, active downloads, partially completed forms, pinned tabs, and connected devices. If a particular site needs to remain loaded, add it to the always-active list in the Memory Saver settings.
Find a specific memory-heavy tab or task
Chrome’s Task Manager shows memory use for browser tasks, including tabs, apps, and background pages. Check it before closing a tab at random.

- Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
- Compatible with select DDR4 SODIMM capable Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) computer systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
- Not compatible with desktop (DIMM), DDR2, DDR3, DDR5, ECC Registered (RDIMM), ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMM), or ECC Unbuffered (ECC UDIMM) memory types
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
- In Chrome, open More > More tools > Task manager.
- Select the Memory column heading to sort tasks by memory use. If the column is not visible, widen the Task Manager window.
- Look for a task you recognize and no longer need. Select it, then choose End process.
Ending a task can discard unsaved work in that tab or app. Save any form, document, or other work first; avoid ending an unfamiliar background task unless you understand what it does.
Review extensions and optional performance settings
Disable or remove extensions you do not use
Open More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Turn off or remove extensions you no longer need. If the slowdown persists and you suspect an extension, change one at a time and observe whether the issue returns; that makes it easier to identify a cause than disabling several at once.

Consider whether page preloading is worth reviewing
Chrome’s Performance settings also include page preloading, which is intended to make browsing and searching faster. You can review it at More > Settings > Performance, but Google does not quantify a memory reduction from changing this setting, so do not treat it as a guaranteed RAM fix.
If Chrome is still slow with few tabs open
Notice whether the slowdown begins with a particular website or web app, or whether the entire computer slows down. Google identifies low system memory, poorly programmed web apps, graphics-intensive pages, and graphics-driver issues as possible causes in its managed-Windows guidance. A page-specific problem may not be solved by changing Chrome’s general memory settings.

For managed Windows computers, administrators can investigate Chrome process isolation and use Google’s documented tracing workflow. That guidance is for managed Windows environments, not a routine consumer fix. Traces may contain sensitive information, so follow Google’s privacy guidance before sharing one.

More physical RAM may help a computer that is short on system memory, but it will not make a particular Chrome tab or extension use less memory, and high Chrome use alone does not prove that the computer needs an upgrade. Check the exact computer model’s upgradeability and compatible memory specifications before buying anything.
