To stop new conversations on a personal ChatGPT account from being used to improve OpenAI’s models, go to Settings → Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. This keeps ordinary chats in your history; it is not a deletion setting. OpenAI says the preference applies across devices when you’re signed in.
Turn off model improvement for a personal ChatGPT account
- On the web: Open the account menu, select Settings, then Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone. Select Done if prompted.
- On iOS or Android: Open the sidebar, tap your profile icon, select Data controls, and turn off Improve the model for everyone.
OpenAI’s stated effect is: “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” The setting controls new conversations, not chats already saved in your history. OpenAI says the setting is enabled by default on Free, Plus, and Pro personal workspaces; you can change it at any time. OpenAI’s Data controls guide has the current steps. Labels and layouts can vary between web and mobile versions.

What the setting does—and does not do
- It limits model-improvement use of new conversations. It does not clear your existing chat history.
- Your regular chats remain in history. Archiving a conversation does not change the model-improvement preference.
- Deleting a chat is separate. Delete conversations individually if you want to remove them from your history; changing this setting does not delete them.
OpenAI describes the setting as applying across devices when you are signed in. If you use ChatGPT while signed out, you can turn off the same control in Settings; the choice is saved in that browser rather than as an account-wide preference. See Data controls in ChatGPT.

Use the account setting if you want ordinary conversations to remain in history while new chats are excluded from model improvement. Use Temporary Chat when you also want that conversation kept out of your chat history and not used to create memories while it remains temporary.

To start one, create a new chat and choose the Temporary control. OpenAI may retain a copy of a Temporary Chat for up to 30 days for safety. If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat and follows your account’s model-improvement and personalization preferences. Details are in OpenAI’s Temporary Chat FAQ.
Important exceptions and account types
Feedback can be used for training
OpenAI says that if you submit thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback, the entire conversation associated with that feedback may be used to train its models, even if you have opted out. Avoid submitting feedback on a conversation you do not want considered for training. OpenAI documents this exception in How your data is used to improve model performance.

Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and API Platform
OpenAI says inputs and outputs for Business, Enterprise, Edu, and API Platform are not used to train models by default; its consumer-services guidance also includes ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces. Organization retention, access, and other workspace policies may still apply, so ask your administrator how your workspace is configured. Codex and the Privacy Portal
OpenAI lists Do not train on my content in its Privacy Portal as an alternative for ChatGPT conversations and Codex tasks. For personal-plan Codex tasks, the ChatGPT model-improvement preference applies, but Codex has a separate Include environments option. Changing the ChatGPT preference or using the Privacy Portal does not change that separate option. Consult OpenAI’s model-performance data guidance for these controls.
