If it still buffers, test another internet connection and device before changing anything else. Buffering can come from the connection, device, playback quality or the video itself—not just an internet plan that is too slow.
Is it a YouTube Premiere or a live stream?
A scheduled, shared first viewing of an uploaded video is usually a YouTube Premiere. Viewers can rewind during it, but cannot skip ahead beyond what has already been shown live. After the Premiere, the video remains on the channel as a regular upload. A creator may also broadcast prerecorded footage through a live encoder; that is a different setup, and its stream health is the creator’s responsibility.

The steps below are for viewers first. The exact controls and available quality choices can vary by device and YouTube app.

- Open the affected video and select the player’s Settings icon.
- Select Quality.
- Choose a lower available resolution, or Data saver if that option appears. On some devices, choose Advanced to select a resolution.
- Resume playback and see whether the buffering stops or becomes less frequent.
YouTube says higher picture quality uses more data and may buffer more often; Data saver lowers picture quality and may start faster. Auto adapts quality to viewing conditions. Lower quality is a quick diagnostic as well as a workaround: if playback improves, the original quality may be demanding more of the connection or device than it can sustain. YouTube also identifies connection speed, player or screen size, source-video quality and browser format support as factors in playback quality. YouTube’s quality settings guidance describes these trade-offs.

2. Check whether the connection is the cause
- Try the video on another connection—for example, switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or the other way around.
- Keep the video and device the same while testing, so the connection is the main variable.
- If mobile data works better, consider its data charges before continuing to watch that way.
YouTube recommends changing the internet connection and retrying. A connection comparison is more useful than immediately upgrading a plan: buffering can also depend on the device, source video or service, and a single test cannot identify every cause.
3. If you are watching on a TV, check Wi-Fi where the TV is
- Test the connection near the TV or streaming device, not only beside the router.
- If practical, move the TV or player closer to the router and reduce physical obstacles or interference.
- Temporarily reduce other devices’ network use, then retry the video.
- YouTube recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming on TV. Treat that as YouTube’s recommendation, not a universal threshold or a guarantee against buffering.
YouTube’s TV guidance and other playback steps are in its streaming and video troubleshooting guide. A wired connection can be a useful comparison if both the TV/player and router support it, but it will not fix a problem caused by the video or YouTube service.

4. Restart the YouTube app and device
- Close YouTube completely, reopen it and retry the affected video.
- If the problem remains, restart the TV, phone, computer or streaming device.
- Check for available YouTube app and device system updates.
- On applicable mobile devices, clear the YouTube app cache, then reopen the app and test again.
These steps reset the local playback path; they may not help if the source video or service is at fault. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide includes restarting the app or device, checking updates and clearing the app cache where applicable.

- Play a different YouTube video on the same device and connection.
- Try the affected video on another supported device or playback method, keeping the connection the same if possible.
- If another video works but the affected Premiere keeps buffering on multiple setups, send feedback to YouTube and contact the channel owner if appropriate.
If the same video fails across a second connection and supported device while other videos play normally, the pattern points toward a video- or service-side issue, but does not prove one. Viewer troubleshooting cannot diagnose the backend state of a particular video, and no playback step guarantees a cure.

If you are the creator: check the incoming live stream
This branch applies only if you are operating the stream. A viewer cannot correct encoder output or YouTube ingest settings from the playback controls. Check YouTube Live Control Room and the stream-health diagnostics for incoming-video or configuration warnings. Google’s Live Streaming API documentation says keyframes sent less often than the recommended interval can cause buffering; its diagnostic states: “Please use a keyframe frequency of four seconds or less. Currently, keyframes are not being sent often enough, which will cause buffering.” The same documentation identifies receiving too little video as a cause of viewer buffering.
