To stop an unwanted Bluetooth connection, first identify what is happening: decline an unfamiliar new pairing request, disconnect a device that is connected now, or forget a previously paired device to prevent that saved pairing from being used again. Turning Bluetooth off is the broad temporary option, but it also interrupts accessories you want to use.
Pairing, reconnecting, and connecting are different
A new pairing request comes from a nearby device that has not yet been paired with yours. Do not accept a request you do not recognize. Seeing a prompt does not by itself mean the device has connected; pairing requires you to accept the connection flow.

An accessory you paired before may reconnect automatically when it is nearby and Bluetooth is enabled. Google documents automatic connections after the first pairing on Android, and Microsoft says a saved Windows device can connect automatically when it is in range.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the accessory is already connected, choose between a temporary disconnect and removing its saved pairing. Disconnecting interrupts the current connection but keeps the pairing for later. Forgetting or removing the device deletes that saved pairing, so you will need to pair it again to use it in the future.

Choose the action that matches your goal
| Action | Scope and duration | Future effect |
|---|---|---|
| Decline or dismiss a new request | That request; it does not disable Bluetooth | Does not remove an existing saved pairing |
| Disconnect one accessory | One current connection; temporary | Keeps the saved pairing, so it can connect again later |
| Forget or remove one accessory | One saved pairing; persistent until paired again | Requires a new pairing to use that accessory |
| Turn Bluetooth off | All Bluetooth use on the device; temporary | Interrupts legitimate Bluetooth accessories too |
Stop an unwanted Bluetooth connection on Android
- Open your phone’s Bluetooth settings. The path and labels vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Choose the accessory from the connected or paired devices list.
- Select Disconnect to stop its current connection while keeping it paired, or choose Forget to remove the saved pairing. Google explains these options in its Android Bluetooth setup and connection instructions.
Google notes that paired devices remain saved until you unpair them and may connect automatically after the initial pairing. If you do not need any Bluetooth accessories temporarily, turn Bluetooth off in the phone’s Bluetooth settings; that affects all Bluetooth connections, not just the unwanted one.
Stop an unwanted Bluetooth connection on iPhone or iPad
Remove the saved pairing
- Open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap the information button next to the accessory.
- Tap Forget This Device and confirm if prompted. See Apple’s instructions for connecting and forgetting Bluetooth accessories.
Apple says forgetting an accessory may unpair it from other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. You may need to pair it again on those devices as well.

Handle Swift Pair prompts
Swift Pair notifications are associated with supported nearby devices that are in pairing mode and discoverable. Decline a prompt for a device you do not recognize. If unwanted prompts continue, review Windows notification and device settings; the available controls and labels depend on your Windows version. Microsoft’s guidance is in its Windows Bluetooth pairing instructions.
When turning Bluetooth off makes sense
Switching Bluetooth off is a broad, reliable temporary choice when you do not need wireless accessories. It interrupts all Bluetooth use on the phone or computer, including devices you trust, but avoids leaving Bluetooth active during that period. It does not remove saved pairings; turn Bluetooth back on and saved devices may reconnect.

Does hiding your device stop Bluetooth pairing?
Making a device non-discoverable can reduce privacy exposure, especially outside the period when you are pairing. Bluetooth SIG’s Bluetooth Security and Privacy Best Practices Guide (2020) says: “Providing a user the ability to disable discoverability independently represents a good compromise but may result in user confusion.” This is a design trade-off, not a promise that every phone or computer offers a separate discoverability switch.

Bluetooth SIG also cautions that “being non-discoverable does not imply being non-connectable.” Hiding a device from discovery is therefore not a universal block on every connection path. Remove unwanted saved pairings and consult the accessory or device maker’s guidance for its specific controls. On iPhone, Apple’s iPhone User Guide (iOS 26) says the phone must be within about 33 feet (10 meters) of a Bluetooth accessory to pair; that is pairing-distance guidance, not a measure of unwanted requests.

If the unwanted prompt or connection returns
- A new request appears: Decline it if you cannot identify the device. Do not treat the prompt as proof that pairing succeeded.
- A known accessory reconnects: Forget or remove its saved pairing on the phone or computer where it is unwanted.
- You need only a short pause: Disconnect that accessory, or turn Bluetooth off if you want to interrupt all Bluetooth use.
- The device is hidden but a connection remains possible: Non-discoverability alone is not a complete connection block; check saved pairings and device-specific controls.
Exact menu names and available controls can change with operating-system releases, manufacturers, and accessory firmware. If your screen differs, look for the accessory’s Bluetooth details in the device’s settings or consult its maker’s instructions.
