If OBS shows a black flash at the same point between playlist clips, the most dependable fix is to combine the clips into one continuous rendered video and play that file as an OBS Media Source. That removes the playlist handoff where the flash occurs. First confirm the frame is in OBS’s local output, not only in YouTube’s playback.
First, find out whether the black frame is in OBS output
- Record locally in OBS. Capture a short recording that includes several playlist boundaries.
- Review the recording around each boundary. If the black frame is in the local recording, investigate media playback. If it appears only in the YouTube playback, check the stream connection and YouTube viewing path instead.
This distinction matters because a repeatable flash exactly at each clip change points first to the media handoff, while dropped frames during playback can indicate a network problem.

Most dependable fix: combine the clips into one file
- Arrange the clips in the intended order in a video editor or other media workflow.
- Render them as one continuous video file. Check the finished file around every join before using it in OBS.
- In OBS, add or select a Media Source, choose the combined file, and play it in place of the multi-file playlist.
- Make a short local OBS recording and review the joins again before going live.
This avoids handing playback from one playlist item to another. It is a practical troubleshooting fix, not a guarantee against every possible playback or encoding issue. The trade-off is that changing the clip order or contents means rebuilding the combined file.

OBS provides a VLC Video source for playing multiple media files as a playlist. VLC must be installed for the source to be available, and its architecture must match OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

- In OBS, add a VLC Video source and check that the playlist contains the intended files in the intended order.
- Set Loop Playlist if the list should repeat, and set Shuffle Playlist only if clips should play in a changing order.
- Check Visibility Behaviour for how the source should behave when hidden or shown in a scene.
- Review network caching if the playlist contains media being read over a network.
- Record and inspect the transitions again. These settings control looping, ordering, visibility, and caching; OBS does not document them as a way to make playlist transitions gapless.
OBS forum and feature-discussion posts document blank or flashing frames as playlist-boundary complaints, including a historical report from 2019. They show that users have reported the symptom; they do not establish that every current OBS setup has it. See the 2019 forum report and the playlist transition suggestion.
Why an image or background usually will not hide the flash
A layer underneath a video can appear when the video source is hidden or outputs nothing. But if an active, opaque video source outputs black pixels, the pixels cover the layers beneath it. A background therefore cannot reliably conceal a decoded black frame at a playlist boundary.

OBS’s Media Source option Show nothing when playback ends concerns what happens when that media source ends; it is not a documented fix for gaps between items in a VLC playlist. For a black frame actually present in the output between clips, use a continuous rendered file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTell a playlist handoff from dropped frames
- Flash repeats exactly at clip changes: start by testing the media files and playlist handoff, then compare with a single combined render.
- Frames drop throughout the stream: check OBS’s dropped-frames counter and connection indicator. OBS says a rising dropped-frames count together with a yellow or red connection indicator points to an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. Follow the network and bitrate troubleshooting in OBS’s dropped-frames help page.
A bitrate or connection change is not the first fix for a flash that happens only at every clip boundary. Conversely, combining files will not fix a stream connection that is dropping frames throughout playback.

Choose the fix that fits how often your playlist changes
| Approach | Boundary reliability | Changing the queue | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| One combined render in an OBS Media Source | Removes the playlist handoff between clips | Rebuild the file after changing clips or order | A stable sequence where avoiding boundary flashes matters most |
| OBS VLC Video playlist | Keeps the handoff between playlist items; gapless transitions are not promised in OBS’s documented settings | Convenient to change playlist contents or order | A queue that changes often, if boundary flashes are acceptable or absent in your setup |
Or let it run in the cloud
