How to Stop API 429 Errors: A Safer Retry Strategy That Won’t Loop All Night

A 429 needs diagnosis before retrying. Learn how to honor Retry-After, back off safely, reduce bursts, and distinguish temporary rate limits from quota or billing errors.

A 429 does not always mean “wait and try again.” First identify whether the provider is reporting temporary rate pressure or a quota, balance, billing, or request problem. For a genuine temporary limit, honor a valid Retry-After as a minimum wait; if there is no usable delay, use capped exponential backoff with jitter, a finite retry count, and an overall time limit.

The headline’s claimed 46-line script and overnight incident are not verifiable from the available details, so this article does not present that code or personal account as established fact. The reliable fix is the behavior your client implements: diagnose the error, wait correctly, reduce the pressure that triggered it, and stop rather than retry indefinitely.

What a 429 means—and what it does not

HTTP 429 signals that a server is refusing a request because of a limit, but the right remedy depends on the provider’s error details. OpenAI distinguishes temporary rate limiting from exhausted prepaid balance or spending and usage limits; the latter require an account or billing change, not a retry loop. Check the response status, structured error body, and headers before deciding what to do. OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance explains these cases.

Limits may apply to request counts, input or output tokens, or other provider-specific measures. A workload can therefore exceed a short-window limit even when its average rate over a full minute appears to be within a published per-minute allowance. Bursts, concurrent work, and token volume all matter.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How to handle a temporary rate limit

  1. Classify the response. Read the status, error body, and headers. Retry only if the response indicates a transient limit. Do not retry quota, billing, malformed-request, or other errors that need a different correction.
  2. Honor a valid server delay. If the response includes a valid Retry-After, wait at least that long. You may add a small random delay so many clients do not all resume at once. Do not cap the wait and then retry earlier than the server requested; if the delay exceeds your operation’s time budget, defer the work.
  3. Back off when no usable delay is supplied. Increase the wait after each failed attempt, cap the delay, and add random jitter. Set both a maximum number of attempts and a total elapsed-time budget. When either limit is reached, return a clear error or queue the work for later.
  4. Account for SDK retries. OpenAI says its official SDKs automatically retry eligible 429 and 503 responses subject to settings. Retry behavior—especially for long server-provided delays—can vary with SDK version and configuration. Check the version you actually use and avoid unknowingly stacking an application retry loop on top of SDK retries.
  5. Make repeated work safe. Where the application allows it, persist completed units and resume from the unfinished work. A terminal error should be visible to the caller rather than hidden by endless retries.

OpenAI cautions that unsuccessful requests still count toward per-minute capacity, so immediate resubmission can deepen the problem rather than solve it. Its rate-limit guide recommends backoff with jitter when a usable server delay is unavailable.

Reduce the pressure that caused the limit

  • Smooth bursts. Space requests over time instead of launching a large batch simultaneously. Reduce concurrency when many workers share the same account or limit pool.
  • Review token usage. For OpenAI, unnecessarily long prompts and overly generous output-token allowances can contribute to token-rate errors. Send only needed context and set output limits appropriate to the task.
  • Inspect the relevant limit dimension. A request-rate limit and a token-rate limit call for different adjustments. Use the provider’s error details and headers to identify which one was exceeded.
  • Use a queue for work that can wait. If requests arrive faster than a provider permits, a queue or rate-controlled worker can spread them out instead of repeatedly failing at the limit.

Why the right response differs by provider

A generic retry policy is not enough: providers define different limit categories and response signals. The following comparison focuses on implementation behavior, not on a universal quota.

Provider and API What may be limited Signals and response What to do
OpenAI API Request and token throughput; balance or spending/usage limits can also lead to a 429. Temporary limits return 429 and may include Retry-After. The error details help distinguish throttling from quota or billing conditions. For temporary pressure, honor a valid delay or use bounded exponential backoff with jitter. For balance or spending limits, address the account or usage condition instead of retrying. See the API guide and Help Center guidance.
Anthropic Messages API Requests per minute, input tokens per minute, and output tokens per minute, depending on model class. The documentation describes a 429 with the exceeded limit identified, a retry-after header, and headers for limit, remaining capacity, and reset time. A spend-cap 429 is described without retry-after. Use the limit and reset information to identify the constraint. Do not assume every 429 is a temporary per-minute throttle; consult the Anthropic rate-limit documentation.
GitHub REST API Primary and secondary rate limits. x-ratelimit-remaining and x-ratelimit-reset report primary-limit state. The documentation says response headers take precedence over the periodic rate-limit endpoint if they disagree. Secondary limits may use retry-after. For primary exhaustion, wait for reset. For secondary limiting, honor retry-after if present; otherwise follow GitHub’s documented wait guidance, including an initial wait of at least one minute in specified cases and longer waits if failures continue. See the versioned REST API documentation.

When retries should stop

A retry policy is not a way to make every request succeed. Stop and surface the failure when the response indicates a non-transient cause, when the attempt limit or time budget is exhausted, or when the server’s requested delay falls outside the operation’s deadline. For deferred work, record enough state to resume later without repeating completed operations. This keeps a temporary throttle from turning into a stalled process that consumes capacity and hides the underlying problem.

What the “46-line script” claim establishes

The title describes a specific script and a night of work saved, but no code, provider, runtime, logs, or independently observed outcome is available here. That means its line count and claimed result cannot be checked, and presenting a made-up implementation as the promised script would mislead readers. The practical guidance above is provider-documented behavior; a script should only be published as the actual fix when its code and the author’s firsthand account are available.
