Windows 11 already performs routine SSD maintenance, so there is no universal setting that guarantees faster NVMe benchmark results. Start by checking drive optimization and free space, then look for system or power-policy bottlenecks before changing advanced storage settings.
How do I optimize an SSD in Windows 11?
Use this sequence to check Windows’ built-in maintenance and identify likely causes of slowdowns without applying risky, generic tweaks.

- Review scheduled drive optimization. Open Start, search for Defragment and Optimize Drives, select the system drive, and check its status and schedule. Microsoft says Windows automatically optimizes data drives for the most part. For an SSD, optimization uses TRIM: Windows tells the drive which blocks can be cleaned up when it is not busy. Microsoft says the default schedule is weekly. Microsoft explains drive optimization and its schedule.
- Check storage use. Go to Settings > System > Storage. Review the space used and available, then inspect Storage Sense and cleanup recommendations for eligible temporary files or large, rarely used files and apps. Cleanup can reclaim space, but Microsoft does not specify a guaranteed speed increase from deleting a particular amount.
- Check what else is keeping the PC busy. Install available Windows updates, then open Task Manager and inspect Processes, Performance, and Startup apps. Look for sustained activity or apps that needlessly run at startup. Slowdowns can also come from CPU or memory limits, malware, outdated software, or other hardware constraints—not just the SSD. Microsoft’s PC-performance guidance covers common causes.
- Compare the slowdown with the system’s workload. Notice whether the problem happens while the PC is idle or only during a repeatable task, and whether disk activity, low free space, or background work coincides with it. This helps distinguish drive-related symptoms from a busy system. The official guidance does not provide a benchmark method or a guaranteed improvement figure.
Should you defragment an SSD?
Do not repeatedly run third-party HDD-style defragmentation tools on an NVMe SSD as a speed tweak. Windows’ built-in scheduled maintenance handles SSD optimization through TRIM; check its status in Defragment and Optimize Drives rather than assuming the drive needs manual defragmentation.
Does Best performance mode make an NVMe SSD faster?
It may help overall responsiveness if the PC’s power policy is limiting performance, but it is not a guaranteed NVMe throughput control. On supported Windows 11 configurations, the power mode choices are Best power efficiency, Balanced, and Best performance. Microsoft describes Best performance as maximizing performance, while warning that it uses more power, can drain a laptop battery faster, and may make the device warmer. Microsoft’s power-mode instructions explain where to select a mode.

- REACH THE NEXT LEVEL: Gen4 steps up with faster transfer speeds and high-performance bandwidth; With a more than 55% improvement in random performance compared to 980 PRO, it’s here for heavy computing and faster loading
- THE FASTEST SSD FROM THE WORLD'S FLASH MEMORY BRAND: The speed you need for any occasion; With read and write speeds up to 7450/6900 MB/s you’ll reach near max performance of PCIe 4.0 powering through for any use
- PLAY WITHOUT LIMITS: Give yourself some space with storage capacities from 1TB to 4TB; Sync all your saves and reign supreme in gaming, video editing, data analysis and more
- IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption
| What to compare | Best performance | Best power efficiency |
|---|---|---|
| Performance and battery | Prioritizes performance; higher power use can shorten laptop battery runtime. | Prioritizes power efficiency; may constrain whole-system performance. |
| Temperature and fan activity | May make the device warmer; observe fan activity during the same task. | Can reduce power use, but the result depends on the device and workload. |
| How to use it | Try it for a repeatable task, especially while plugged in, and compare responsiveness. | Use it when conserving power matters more than peak responsiveness. |
These are whole-system tradeoffs, not measured SSD speed gains. If switching modes makes no clear difference in the task that feels slow, return to the setting that suits your battery and temperature needs. Microsoft also notes the power and heat tradeoffs.
Why avoid generic NVMe power tweaks?
NVMe power states and PCIe link behavior depend on the drive, platform firmware, Windows version, and thermal conditions. Microsoft’s StorNVMe documentation describes power states, PCIe Active State Power Management (ASPM), maximum operational power, and thermal-framework callbacks as interacting parts of device and platform behavior. A copied registry edit or powercfg command may not apply to a particular PC and can trade efficiency or thermals for performance; it is not a universal speed recipe. Microsoft Learn documents StorNVMe power management.

- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
Dynamic Link Rate Management (DLRM) is similarly platform-specific. Microsoft says it is opt-in through platform firmware and supported by Windows 11 version 24H2, build 26100.2894 or later. It adjusts PCIe link speed dynamically according to I/O workload to improve power efficiency; it is not a hidden Windows setting that every reader should enable. Microsoft Learn describes DLRM support and requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen is an SSD itself the likely problem?
First establish that the slowdown consistently coincides with storage activity or a storage-related task, rather than a full workload, startup apps, low free space, or power policy. If the symptoms point to the drive but built-in checks do not explain them, the evidence here does not establish a particular diagnostic utility or hardware replacement as necessary. Consider a replacement only if diagnosis shows the existing drive is failing or inadequate; extra hardware is not a general Windows optimization.
