The right choice depends on whether you want to mute prompts, pause access to selected apps, or filter interruptions across your phone.
Choose the control that matches what you want to stop

Start with app notification settings if you want a precise fix for one app. Choose Focus mode if you want selected apps unavailable for a while, an app timer if you want a daily usage cap, or DND if you want a wider quiet window.

Turn off or reduce notifications from one app
- Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
- Select the app that is drawing you back in.
- Turn off all its notifications, or adjust the notification categories it exposes to keep only the alerts you need.
On many Android phones, you can also touch and hold one of the app’s notifications to open its notification settings. Menu names and category options vary by device; if the route above does not match, search Settings for “notifications” or use the notification shortcut.
Pause selected apps temporarily with Focus mode
- Open Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Focus mode.
- Choose the apps you want to pause.
- Turn Focus mode on, or set a schedule if you want it to activate at regular times.
With Focus mode active, the selected apps cannot be used and do not send notifications. If you need access before it ends, use Take a break to unpause them for a chosen interval. Availability and labels can differ by device.

Set a daily app limit with an app timer
- Open Settings > Digital Wellbeing > App timers.
- Select the app and set the time limit you want.
When the limit is reached, Android closes the app and dims its icon. The timer resets at midnight; Google says you can remove the timer to use the app again before then. Some work and school accounts may not support app timers.
Use Do Not Disturb for a broader quiet period
For a quick quiet period, turn on Do Not Disturb from Quick Settings. To decide what can still interrupt you, open the phone’s DND or modes settings and configure filters for people, apps, alarms, and other interruptions. Depending on the device and setup, you can have DND last until you turn it off, choose a set interval, or be prompted each time; modes can also be scheduled.

Exact steps vary by phone. Google’s documented steps for some Modes features apply only to Android 14 and later, and critical notifications can still show. Check the options on your device rather than assuming every phone offers the same filters.
Find or quiet alerts without changing the whole setup
Review recent or dismissed notifications
Notification history can help you find snoozed, dismissed, and recent alerts so you can review or manage them later. Availability varies; on devices that support notification snoozing, snoozing must be enabled in settings. See Google’s notification guidance for the available controls.

Reduce a burst of alerts
Notification cooldown reduces sounds and pop-ups when many notifications arrive in a short time. It is not available on every device, and exceptions include calls, alarms, priority conversations, and emergency alerts. This can soften a burst, but it is not a replacement for turning off a distracting app’s notifications or pausing the app.

If the menus do not match your phone
- Search Settings for “notifications,” “Focus mode,” “app timers,” or “Do Not Disturb.”
- Touch and hold a notification from the app to reach its notification controls when that shortcut is available.
- Expect names, category choices, schedules, and feature availability to vary with manufacturer, Android version, and account type.
