To stop spoken message summaries, turn off Message Summary in Android Auto settings on your phone: Settings > Notifications > Message Summary. That setting targets summaries; Google does not say it disables every message notification or every way messages might be read aloud. To reduce what appears on the car display, review Android Auto’s notification settings and the notification settings for the messaging app or conversation as well.
Turn off spoken message summaries
- On your phone, open Android Auto settings. Depending on the phone, you can find them in the Settings app by searching for “Android Auto.”
- Open Notifications.
- Turn off Message Summary.
This is Google’s documented control for message summaries. It is not documented as a universal switch for all message alerts or read-aloud behavior. Labels and availability can change with software updates, and Google says Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices during 2026; availability varies by device, language, and territory. Reduce message notifications on the car display
Android Auto can show message notifications, which may be tapped to listen to a message. Review notification preferences in Android Auto settings on your phone, then check the notification settings for the messaging app involved. The exact controls can vary by phone, Android version, app, and vehicle, so check what changes on your own car display after adjusting them. Google’s overview of sending and receiving messages in Android Auto describes the messaging behavior.

Android may let you set an individual conversation to Silent. Open the conversation’s notification settings on your phone and choose Silent if that option is available. Menu names and support differ between messaging apps. Google documents conversation controls in Find your chats and messages quickly, but does not promise that silencing a conversation will consistently prevent Android Auto from showing or reading its messages.

Remember that dismissing a banner may not remove the message from view
A dismissed banner is not proof that the message is inaccessible in the car. Google says missed or dismissed messages can remain available as tiles and in Android Auto’s notification center. The dashboard layout can vary by display. See Google’s guide to screens and apps on Android Auto.
If you need to prevent someone using the car display from accessing a particular message, do not assume that dismissing the alert—or changing a single notification setting—removes every route to it. Check the notification center and tiles on your vehicle after changing settings. Google’s documentation does not establish a universal method for clearing all message access across every phone and car.
Consider the privacy trade-off of connection permissions
Google says Google Play services may use SMS permission to read, view, and send texts, and contacts permission to view contacts when connected to Android Auto. You can review device-connection preferences under Android Settings > Connected devices. Google does not document a universal setting that disables only message access while preserving every other Android Auto feature, so changing permissions may affect how connected features work. Check that your car is using Android Auto projection
These steps apply to Android Auto, which projects supported phone features onto the car display. Cars with Google built-in use a separate infotainment system and have their own assistant and notification controls. Google’s instructions for that system cover Bluetooth pairing, assistant notification access, and muting a conversation; menus vary by manufacturer, region, and data plan. Use Google’s guide to messages in cars with Google built-in if that is the system in your vehicle.
