If you started the stream in the YouTube mobile app, tap Finish. If a remote encoder is sending the video, use that provider’s mobile dashboard if it supports the controls; YouTube does not provide one universal phone control for unnamed cloud encoders.
First identify what is sending the video
There are three common setups, and they have different stop controls:
- YouTube mobile live: Your phone is the video source, and the stream was started in the YouTube app. The app’s in-stream control ends that stream.
- Encoder-based live: Software or hardware sends a video feed to YouTube. The encoder and YouTube Live Control Room are the relevant control points.
- Third-party cloud encoder: A service provider runs the encoder remotely. Whether you can stop or restart it from a phone depends on that provider’s mobile app or dashboard.
YouTube distinguishes mobile streaming from encoder streaming; a mobile instruction for ending a stream you started in the app does not explain how to operate a separate remote encoder. See YouTube’s mobile live-streaming guide and its encoder guide.
Stop a stream started in the YouTube mobile app
- Open the live stream in the YouTube app on the phone that is streaming.
- Tap Finish in the in-stream controls to end it.
This applies to a stream created from the YouTube mobile app, not to a cloud encoder that is already sending a feed to YouTube. YouTube’s mobile guide gives the instruction: “To end your stream: Tap Finish.” The guide is for Android; check the controls shown in your app if your device or app version differs.

Stop an encoder-based stream from a phone
YouTube documents encoder controls and Live Control Room controls, but a phone is only the means of access: it does not automatically control an encoder running elsewhere.
- For a third-party cloud encoder, sign in to its supported mobile app or dashboard and look for controls to stop the encoder or its YouTube output. Use the provider’s instructions for its own interface. The hosting service is not specified here, so there is no verified universal sequence of taps.
- For an encoder with YouTube auto-stop enabled, YouTube says the encoder can start or stop streaming. The setting is managed for the stream in YouTube Studio; the encoder still has to support and use the relevant behavior. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream settings guide.
- For a manual encoder stop, YouTube’s encoder guide describes ending the stream in Live Control Room and stopping the content feed from the encoder. If that encoder is on a remote service, you must be able to reach its controls from your phone or another device.
If the encoder is hosted by a provider, check its documentation before stopping the feed: the provider determines whether its dashboard works in a mobile browser and whether it offers a restart control.

Restart carefully: the same broadcast may not remain available
Stopping the feed and restarting it are separate actions. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation says a broadcast automatically ends around a minute after its bound live stream stops sending video. That describes broadcast lifecycle behavior; it is not a guarantee that reconnecting a remote encoder will resume the same broadcast. See YouTube’s liveBroadcasts documentation.
Before stopping, check the broadcast’s state in Live Control Room and the cloud provider’s restart instructions. If the broadcast has ended, you may need to create or schedule another one and use the appropriate stream setup. Do not assume a “restart” button on an encoder will preserve the existing YouTube event.
