How to Stop an RFID Chip From Being Read: Safe Options by Tag Type

RFID tags do not share one universal off switch. Compare permanent kill features, reversible protected modes and sleeves, and learn when to contact the issuer or manufacturer.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single way to disable every RFID chip. A compatible EPC Gen2 tag may support a password-protected command intended to disable it permanently; a supported protected mode can temporarily limit responses; and an RFID-blocking sleeve can block reads only while the item is enclosed. The right choice depends on the tag, your authorization, and whether the item still needs to work.

First decide what you mean by “disable”

RFID systems use different tag designs and features. Stopping a tag from responding over its normal radio interface is not necessarily the same as erasing everything stored on it or physically destroying the chip.

For example, NIST describes a password-protected kill feature for compatible EPCglobal Gen2 tags, not for every RFID tag. The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) also cautions that identification information can remain stored after some kill procedures, even if the tag no longer responds through its normal interface. See NIST’s RFID security guidance and the BSI study, Security Aspects and Prospective Applications of RFID.

Compare the available options

Option Reversible? What it requires What it does
Electronic kill feature Intended to be permanent A compatible tag, compatible reader and correct password or authorization Disables normal tag functionality on supported models; it is not a universal command.
Password-protected mode Yes, on supported models A model with this feature and the credentials to change its mode Can limit when the tag responds; authorized control can restore its response.
RFID-blocking sleeve or wallet Yes; only while enclosed A blocker compatible with the item and tag Can limit reads while the item is inside; it does not change or deactivate the tag.
Remove or destroy an accessible tag Usually not if the chip or antenna is destroyed Permission from the item’s owner and a tag designed to be accessible or removable May end the tag’s function, but can damage the item and is not a general-purpose method.

Choose the least disruptive approach

For a temporary block

Use a compatible RFID-blocking sleeve or wallet if you want to limit reads while carrying an item. The New Zealand Government Communications Security Bureau’s Information Security Manual identifies blocking wallets and sleeves as an option. They are reversible: take the item out, and the tag may be readable again. Compatibility is not universal, so do not assume a blocker will work with every card, tag, frequency or reader.

For an authorized permanent change

Ask the tag’s issuer, product owner or manufacturer whether the exact model supports an electronic kill feature and who is authorized to use it. NIST describes the EPCglobal Gen2 feature as password-protected and permanent for supported tags. Without the required credentials and compatible equipment, there is no reliable universal procedure. Avoid commands or instructions intended for a different tag model.

Features can be model-specific. STMicroelectronics, for example, lists a configurable kill mode for its ST25TA-E IC; that product page marks the device NRND, so it is an example of a particular chip’s feature, not a recommendation for a new purchase. See the ST25TA-E product page. Impinj separately describes a reversible, password-controlled Protected Mode for supported tags: Impinj Protected Mode.

For a tag on a product you own

Before removing or deactivating a product tag, consider whether it may still be useful. GS1 says EPC/RFID tags transmit product data only when prompted by a signal from an RFID reader. Tags can also support returns, recalls and recovery of stolen goods; BSI notes possible uses in exchange, repair, resale and recycling. For the consumer question of whether EPC-tagged products can be identified at home, see GS1’s answer, modified 30 August 2024.

For cards, credentials or embedded tags

Do not attempt a permanent change to an identity document, payment or access card, medical device, safety system or other embedded tag without guidance from its issuer or manufacturer. Disabling or damaging it could stop a service you rely on or interfere with the item’s intended use. Ask the responsible organization about its approved privacy, replacement or disposal process.

What not to do

There is no safe, model-agnostic physical trick for disabling RFID. Avoid improvised methods involving heat, electricity or impact: the right method depends on what the tag is attached to, and an attempt can damage the host item or create a safety hazard. Remove a tag only if it is designed to be removable and the product owner’s instructions permit it. For an embedded or critical tag, contact the manufacturer or issuer.
