But “public” describes the address’s scope—not whether a device can accept connections from outside. Routing, firewalls, network address translation (NAT), and your provider’s setup all affect reachability.
What is a public IP address?
An Internet Protocol (IP) address identifies a network interface for sending and receiving traffic. A public IP address belongs to address space used on the public Internet. The phrase is commonly used to distinguish it from private IPv4 addresses reserved for local networks.

Addressing is hierarchical: the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) coordinates global address resources and delegates blocks to Regional Internet Registries; providers and other network operators then assign addresses to networks and users. See IANA’s overview of number resources and its explanation of IP address allocation.

How is a public address different from a private IPv4 address?
IPv4 addresses in the following three ranges are reserved for private networks under RFC 1918. They are intended for use within networks, not as source or destination addresses on the public Internet. A home router can use them for devices on the local network.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| Address range | Common notation | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 10.0.0.0–10.255.255.255 | 10/8 | Private IPv4 network |
| 172.16.0.0–172.31.255.255 | 172.16/12 | Private IPv4 network |
| 192.168.0.0–192.168.255.255 | 192.168/16 | Private IPv4 network |
IANA lists these as private-use addresses and notes they should not appear on the public Internet. Details are in IANA’s private-address guidance.
Is every address outside those ranges public?
No. The three RFC 1918 ranges are not an exhaustive test for whether an address is public. IANA designates 100.64.0.0/10 as Shared Address Space for service-provider use. It is separate from private-use space and can appear in provider networks, including where providers share IPv4 addresses among customers. Other IPv4 ranges are reserved for special purposes, too. Consult the IANA IPv4 Address Space registry rather than treating every address outside the private ranges as public.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Why do several devices seem to use the same public IPv4 address?
In a common home setup, a provider assigns a public IPv4 address to the router’s Internet-facing side. Devices on the home network use private IPv4 addresses. The router uses NAT to translate traffic between the local addresses and the provider-facing address, so several devices can share one public IPv4 address for Internet communication. This is a common arrangement, not a description of every provider or network. The IETF discusses address sharing in RFC 6269.
Consequently, “my IP address” can mean different things: a device’s local address, the router’s provider-facing address, or the address a remote service sees after traffic has passed through NAT or other network infrastructure.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
How do you tell whether an IP address is public?
- Identify which address you are checking. A device’s Wi-Fi or Ethernet details usually show its address on the local network. A router’s Internet or WAN status shows the address on its provider-facing interface. These are not necessarily the same.
- For an IPv4 address, check the private ranges. If it falls within 10.0.0.0–10.255.255.255, 172.16.0.0–172.31.255.255, or 192.168.0.0–192.168.255.255, it is RFC 1918 private-use space.
- Check special-purpose assignments before classifying other addresses. For example, an address in 100.64.0.0/10 is Shared Address Space, not RFC 1918 private space. The IANA registry lists address-space designations.
- Interpret the result in context. A public-facing address does not prove that a device is reachable from outside. NAT, firewall rules, routing, and provider configuration can block or alter inbound connections.
Does “public IP address” include IPv6?
Yes. Public Internet addressing includes both IPv4 and IPv6. IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses commonly written as four decimal numbers separated by periods; IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses commonly written as hexadecimal groups separated by colons. IANA identifies 2000::/3 as IPv6 Global Unicast space, while maintaining separate special-purpose designations. Not every possible IPv6 address is globally usable or reachable. See IANA’s Number Resources overview and the IANA IPv6 Address Space registry.
