If an AI assistant talks over you, use its interrupt, mute, or end control and reduce audio noise. If it is taking an action too soon, change its permissions and require approval before it sends, shares, changes, deletes, or buys anything. These are separate problems: voice controls manage listening and conversation, while approval controls manage what the assistant can do.
Is the assistant interrupting your speech or acting without the right approval?
Start by identifying what went wrong. If the assistant speaks over you or stops listening, look for voice-session controls and check the audio environment. If it has begun an external action—such as sending a message or changing an account—look for task permissions and approval checkpoints. The exact controls depend on the assistant, device, account, and feature rollout.

- Talking or listening problem: interrupt the response, mute the microphone, dismiss the session, or end voice mode.
- Action or timing problem: narrow permissions, require confirmation, and review the proposed action before it runs.
- Work already underway: stop or pause the task, then check what has already happened. Stopping work does not necessarily undo completed actions.
How do I stop ChatGPT Voice from interrupting me?
ChatGPT Voice allows you to speak while it responds, but overlapping speech and audio conditions can affect what it hears. OpenAI identifies background noise, long pauses, and another speaker as factors associated with interruptions. Try moving to a quieter place or using headphones; on iPhone, Voice Isolation may help. How do I stop an assistant from acting before I approve it?
Use the strongest approval setting that still lets you do the work. For actions with consequences outside the chat—sending, sharing, changing, deleting, purchasing, or booking—prefer a prompt for each action over a broad, persistent permission. Read the approval card before accepting; check the recipient, content, account, and requested change.
ChatGPT app permissions
For eligible apps or accounts, ChatGPT’s app permission controls may include Always ask, read-only access, low-risk actions, or all actions. Important actions can expose sensitive information, affect an account, or be difficult to undo; approval cards show the proposed action before it runs. Available choices can vary by account, workspace, and app. Consult OpenAI’s app permissions guide.

ChatGPT tasks and custom rules
Give an ongoing task a narrow scope: what it may do, under what conditions, and when it must stop for review. ChatGPT task rules can be set to ask before acting, act only when explicitly told, or hand the action to you. A request to draft something is not permission to send it. These rules do not override built-in requirements or provide access you have not separately granted.

Use the control that matches the work: pause a main task, stop an individual delegated task, or cancel a scheduled run. Check active work and scheduled tasks separately. OpenAI also says stopping work does not reverse actions already completed. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT agent guidance.

Microsoft Copilot plugins and Cowork
Microsoft’s API-plugin guidance says a user sees a first-time connection prompt. After connection, read-only GET operations do not require confirmation, while other operations prompt with the data to be sent and let the user accept or decline. The documentation recommends marking actions with external side effects as consequential through the x-openai-isConsequential property. This describes API/MCP plugins in declarative agents; Microsoft’s notice says these plugins are not enabled in Microsoft 365 Copilot generally. It is not a universal Copilot setting that every user can change. See Microsoft Learn’s plugin guidance.
Microsoft’s support article describes personal-account Copilot Cowork as a Preview feature. It asks permission for certain actions, including writing files, and provides pause, resume, and cancel controls. Examples needing approval include payments, sharing personal information externally, messaging others, account changes, and sensitive submissions. Review recipients, content, and action details because the agent can make mistakes. See Microsoft’s Copilot Cowork support page; availability may change as the feature rolls out.

Siri requests sent to ChatGPT
By default, Siri asks for confirmation before using ChatGPT. On supported Apple devices, the setting is Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT; turning off Confirm ChatGPT Requests removes that confirmation. Starting a request with “Ask ChatGPT…” also bypasses confirmation for that request. Siri still asks permission before sending a file, so disabling request confirmation does not grant automatic file access. See OpenAI’s Siri and Apple Intelligence FAQ.
Gemini Android app tasks
For supported Android app tasks, Gemini lets you view live progress, stop the task, or take control; some tasks pause and ask you to take control. Google’s help page notes that on Pixel 10 and Galaxy S26, taking control is not available for now, so users can stop the task instead. These controls and device limits are feature-specific. What should I do if an assistant has already started?
- Stop or pause the current task. Use the task’s own control rather than assuming that muting voice will stop background work.
- Inspect what has already happened. Check sent messages, shared files, account changes, purchases, or other affected records. A stop control may prevent future steps without rolling back completed ones.
- Review separate schedules and delegated work. Cancel a scheduled run if needed, and stop delegated tasks individually where the product provides separate controls.
- Revoke or narrow the permission. Change the app or assistant’s access before restarting, and require a fresh confirmation for consequential actions.
Some safeguards may pause work before an action completes. OpenAI says Astra model conversations across ChatGPT, Codex, and the API may be paused or stopped when the system detects a possible misinterpretation involving sensitive data access, data transfer, or destructive changes. Treat that as a safety pause to review—not proof that the assistant made an error. See OpenAI’s precaution guidance.
Why might an assistant interrupt even when I did not ask it to?
Voice overlap, background speech, pauses, and noise can interfere with turn-taking or recognition. Separately, an assistant may have a wake feature or a scheduled workflow enabled. Review whether the session is still active, end or dismiss it if you do not want it listening, and disable optional voice activation in that product’s settings. Feature names and availability vary, so confirm the assistant, operating system, and account before following a menu path.
Timers are another case where timing can be intentional rather than conversational. Amazon’s Alexa developer guidance says a skill needs Global Timers Read/Write permission and explicit user permission for a timer’s extended experience; a timer may ring while another Alexa interaction is underway. For consumers, the practical lesson is to check whether a skill or workflow you enabled can set interruptive timers. A quick decision checklist
- It is speaking over you: interrupt or mute it, reduce background noise, try headphones, or use dictation where available.
- It seems to be listening unexpectedly: end or dismiss the session and review optional wake or voice-activation settings.
- It may affect someone or something outside the chat: require approval and inspect the action details before accepting.
- It is running in the background: inspect the active task and scheduled work separately, then verify completed effects.
