How to Stop an AI Agent From Repeating Actions or Running Indefinitely

A finite turn or tool-iteration limit prevents an agent run from continuing indefinitely. Learn what the OpenAI Agents SDK and AutoGen settings count—and how to diagnose a run that reaches its cap.

Set a finite turn or tool-iteration limit in the agent runtime first. Then inspect the run history to find whether repeated tool calls, a tool failure, or an orchestration handoff kept the agent going. A limit stops execution at a boundary; it does not, by itself, detect duplicate actions or explain why the run failed to finish.

Why an AI agent can keep repeating actions

An agent run is a control loop: the model produces a response, the runtime may execute a tool call or hand off to another agent, and the model runs again. The loop ends when the agent produces a final result or a configured stopping condition is reached. OpenAI describes this flow in its Running agents documentation.

If an action does not resolve the task—for example, a tool returns an error or an agent hands work back without progress—the runtime may continue the loop. The same sequence can recur, but repetition is not necessarily the cause: a long task may also legitimately need many iterations.

Put a hard limit on the run

Choose a finite bound appropriate to the work and configure it in the runtime that executes the agent. The relevant units differ by framework: one setting counts agent turns, another counts tool iterations.

An integrated 350W power supply ensures stable and reliable output for demanding computing tasks and fully loaded extended configurations.
Framework and setting What it counts At the limit
OpenAI Agents SDK: max_turns Maximum turns for the run, as documented by OpenAI The runner raises MaxTurnsExceeded. Setting max_turns=None disables the turn limit. See OpenAI’s running-agents guide.
Microsoft AutoGen AgentChat: max_tool_iterations Maximum tool iterations for an assistant Provides a stopping boundary for tool iterations. AutoGen’s guide illustrates a setting with a code comment describing at most 10 iterations; that example is not a universal recommendation. See AutoGen’s Agents guide.

Use the syntax and behavior documented for the version you deploy. These settings are execution caps, not general-purpose semantic loop detectors. The documentation establishes that they bound turns or iterations; it does not establish that they identify duplicate or unproductive actions.

Diagnose the run after a limit is reached

Reaching the bound tells you the run exceeded its configured allowance, not why. Review the run sequence—the model outputs, tool calls and results, handoffs, and whether a final output appeared—to distinguish a valid but lengthy task from a tool failure or a cycle. OpenAI’s documented loop makes these stages explicit.

  • Repeated tool inputs: If the same action and inputs recur without progress, add application-level checks for repeated inputs or require a meaningful progress condition before allowing another iteration.
  • Tool errors or unhelpful results: Check whether the agent receives the error or result it needs to choose a different next step; a turn cap alone will not repair the tool or the instruction.
  • Handoffs that cycle: Trace which agent hands work to which other agent and whether control returns without a completion condition.
  • Legitimate long work: If each iteration makes progress, revisit whether the configured bound fits the task rather than removing the bound by default.

These checks are application-level engineering measures, not features established by the cited framework settings. For unattended runs, keep a finite bound. For consequential tool actions, also apply suitable application permissions and validation; a turn or iteration limit is not an authorization check.

Choose a bound without assuming one number fits every task

Neither cited guide establishes a universally correct maximum. Set the cap in relation to the task’s expected work, then review actual run histories and adjust it if productive runs routinely reach the boundary. Avoid treating AutoGen’s illustrated 10-iteration configuration as a recommended default for other tasks or frameworks.
