You can’t currently turn hands-free voice search on or off in the Google app for desktop: Google’s help for the Windows app does not document a wake-word feature or a related setting. If you want to speak a search on your computer, use Google Search in a browser and click its microphone button; that starts a voice query manually.
Does the Google app for desktop support hands-free voice search?
Google describes its desktop app as a Windows search tool, but its current help does not list an always-listening feature, a “Hey Google” wake word, or an on/off control for hands-free voice search. There is therefore no documented setting to enable or disable in the app. See Google’s “Get started with the Google app for desktop” help for the app’s documented features and steps.

This is specific to the Google app for desktop on Windows. Google’s April 14, 2026 announcement said the app was available to Windows users around the world, but that launch statement does not establish hands-free voice control: Google’s announcement.

How to speak a search on a computer
Google’s documented browser method starts when you click the microphone in Google Search; it is not a wake-word command that listens continuously.

- Open Google.com in a desktop browser.
- Click the microphone button in the search bar.
- When prompted, allow microphone access, then say your search.
Google describes this method in its Chrome browser features and tools information. A microphone may be needed for voice input, but connecting one does not add a hands-free setting to the desktop app.
Voice search, dictation, and spoken answers are different

Why Android “Hey Google” instructions don’t apply
Google’s Assistant and Voice Match instructions cover eligible Android and Google Home devices, not the Windows desktop app. If you are trying to change wake-word behavior on a supported phone or home device, use the instructions for that device: Google Assistant Help and Google Account Help for Voice Match. Those controls are not a way to enable or disable hands-free search in the desktop app.
