These controls generally affect future conversations. They do not automatically erase chat history, undo use that already occurred, or stop every form of storage, safety review, personalization, advertising, security, or legal processing.
What an AI-training opt-out actually changes
Each service treats “training” as one use of conversation data among several. Turning off the documented control normally prevents qualifying future conversations from being used to improve or train models. It is not a universal deletion command and is not proof that a provider keeps no copy.

- Prospective effect: the switch usually applies from the time you change it onward. Do not assume older chats were removed from training datasets.
- History and retention are separate: a conversation can remain in your account, be held briefly for a response or safety check, or be retained after feedback even when ordinary model-improvement use is disabled.
- Feedback can override the ordinary path: thumbs-up/down reports may send the associated conversation for review or model improvement.
- Safety processing still applies: providers may inspect or retain content to detect abuse, investigate incidents, meet legal duties, or secure the service.
- Account type matters: consumer, business, education, API, and managed work accounts can have different defaults and administrator controls.
Make the change in the account or activity settings before sending sensitive material. Asking the assistant “don’t train on this chat” is not the documented control for any of the four services covered here.

Stop ChatGPT from training on your conversations
Turn off the personal-account setting
- Sign in to ChatGPT.
- Open Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Switch off Improve the model for everyone.
OpenAI’s Data controls in ChatGPT documentation says, “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” For a signed-in account, the choice applies across devices. If you use ChatGPT while signed out, the selection is saved in that browser, so another browser or device can have a different state.

Use Temporary Chat for a conversation that should not enter history
Start a Temporary Chat when you do not want the conversation to appear in history, create or update memories, or be used to improve OpenAI models while it remains temporary. OpenAI says a temporary conversation may still be retained for up to 30 days for safety. If you save it, it becomes a regular chat and follows the normal data settings.
Know the feedback exception
On a personal plan, submitting thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback can make the entire conversation associated with that feedback eligible for model training, even after the general improvement switch is off. Avoid sending feedback on a sensitive chat unless you accept that consequence.
Business and managed workspaces
OpenAI states that content from Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces is not used to train models by default. Your organization can still set retention, access and other policies, so a workspace account is not identical to a personal account. Check the administrator’s policy before treating the default as a guarantee for your particular organization.

Disable Model Improvement
- Sign in to the Claude consumer service.
- Open Privacy Settings.
- Keep Model Improvement disabled.
Anthropic’s consumer-products privacy article says chats and coding sessions may be used to improve models when a user chooses to allow it. The same documentation identifies other routes: content flagged for safety review and explicit participation in a program such as Trusted Tester. Therefore, disabling the ordinary setting is necessary but should not be described as a blanket ban on every possible processing route.

Choose Incognito chats for an additional boundary
Anthropic states: “Your Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if you have enabled Model Improvement in your Privacy Settings.” Incognito is therefore the relevant per-conversation option when you want that specific improvement-use exclusion without relying on the account-wide state.
Do not use feedback casually
Anthropic’s feedback documentation says a thumbs-up or thumbs-down report stores the related conversation in its secure backend for up to five years and may use it for model training as permitted by law. That retention period applies to the feedback-linked conversation, not automatically to every Claude chat.
Commercial products are a different policy category
Anthropic says Claude for Work, its API and other commercial offerings are not used for training by default, with exceptions for feedback or explicit permission. Confirm the contract and administrator settings for your organization rather than applying consumer Privacy Settings instructions to a work account.

Web instructions for a personal account
- Open Gemini and sign in to your personal Google account.
- Choose Settings and help.
- Select Activity.
- Choose Turn off for Gemini Apps Activity’s Keep Activity control.
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says that with Keep Activity off, future chats do not appear in Activity and are not used to train Google’s AI models unless you choose to send feedback.

Mobile instructions
- Open the Gemini mobile app.
- Tap your profile control.
- Open Gemini Apps Activity.
- Turn off Keep Activity.
Labels can move as Google updates the app; use the Gemini Apps Activity page as the final check that the state is off.
What “off” does not erase
Turning off Keep Activity is not immediate deletion and does not mean zero processing. Google says chats can be kept for up to 72 hours to provide responses, process feedback and maintain safety. Chats already reviewed by service providers are disconnected from your account and may be retained for up to three years. When Keep Activity is on, the default auto-delete period is 18 months, and activity may be used to develop and improve services, including generative-model training.
Feature and account limitations
Some connected apps are unavailable while Keep Activity is off. Work or school accounts can be controlled by an administrator, so the personal-account path may not be available. Google also has a separate control for improving audio from Gemini and Gemini Live video or screen sharing; its computer instructions say that control is off by default. Check it separately if you use those modalities rather than assuming the text-chat setting covers them.

Opt out of training in personal Microsoft Copilot
Copilot on the web
- Sign in to your personal Microsoft account at Copilot.
- Open the profile icon.
- Select your profile name.
- Open Privacy.
- Turn off Training on conversation activity.
- Turn off Training on voice conversations if you use voice.
Windows and macOS
- Open Copilot and select the profile icon.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Privacy.
- Disable both training controls shown for conversation and voice activity.
Mobile
- Open the Copilot mobile app and open the menu.
- Tap your profile.
- Choose Account, then Privacy.
- Disable the conversation and voice training controls.
Microsoft’s Copilot privacy-controls guide says, “Opting out will exclude your future conversation activities from being used for training these AI models.” The wording is prospective: it does not promise deletion or removal of material already used.

Understand the controls’ limits
Microsoft separates training from general product or system improvement, advertising, digital safety, security and compliance processing. Personalization and memory are separate as well; turning off training does not automatically turn those features off.
The cited Microsoft page says it applies only to an older Copilot app version and notes that an updated Copilot app and web experience has been available since August 18, 2026. Before following a screenshot or reporting a current menu label, open Microsoft’s newer personal Copilot privacy guidance from that page and verify the interface you actually use. These instructions do not cover Microsoft 365 Copilot work or school accounts.

None of the four training switches should be presented as a command to erase previous chats. If you want less account history, use the provider’s normal conversation-history deletion tools as a separate step. Deletion from a visible history list also may not remove safety logs, legally required records, de-identified material, feedback copies or data already incorporated into a model. The cited provider documentation does not establish that an opt-out reverses prior training, so do not promise that it does.

- ChatGPT: Temporary Chats may be retained up to 30 days for safety; personal-plan feedback can expose the associated conversation to training.
- Claude: safety-flagged content and explicit improvement programs are separate routes; feedback-linked conversations may remain up to five years and may be used for training as permitted by law.
- Gemini: Keep Activity off still allows up to 72 hours of retention for response, feedback and safety; service-provider-reviewed chats can be disconnected and retained up to three years.
- Copilot: training opt-outs leave other product, advertising, safety, security, compliance, personalization and memory processing in place.
These exceptions explain why “not used for training” is narrower than “private” or “not retained.” Share the minimum information needed, redact names and account numbers, and avoid uploading secrets that would cause harm if reviewed under a provider’s safety or feedback process.
Consumer versus work and school accounts
Do not copy a personal-account procedure into an organization-managed workspace. ChatGPT states that several business and education workspace categories are not used for training by default. Anthropic gives a similar default for commercial products. Google work or school Gemini settings can be administered by the organization, and the personal Copilot guide does not cover Microsoft 365 Copilot work or school accounts. In a managed account, the administrator’s retention, audit and data-use policy controls what happens, even if a personal profile menu looks similar.
A verification checklist after you change a setting
- Confirm the account: make sure you changed the same personal, work or school account that will send the next chat.
- Check every device: signed-in ChatGPT settings synchronize, while signed-out browser choices do not necessarily follow you; verify other services on web and mobile.
- Cover modalities: disable voice-specific controls where offered, and review Gemini’s separate audio, Live video and screen-sharing improvement setting.
- Test with a harmless prompt: send a non-sensitive message, then revisit the activity or privacy page to ensure the switch remains off.
- Avoid feedback on sensitive chats: feedback has distinct retention and training consequences for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.
- Delete history separately if desired: do not infer deletion from the training switch.
- Recheck after updates: menu names and policies change, particularly for Gemini and Copilot. Use the linked official help page immediately before relying on a label or screenshot.
What to do if the switch is missing
You are in a managed account
Look for an organization notice or contact the administrator. A work, school or enterprise policy may replace the consumer control.
The app and web settings disagree
Sign out, identify the account shown in the profile menu, update the app, and check the provider’s web privacy page. Copilot’s documented navigation is version-sensitive, and Google’s mobile labels can differ from the web path.
You opted out but still see old chats
That is expected for a prospective training control. History visibility and retention are separate. Delete the chat using the provider’s history tools if appropriate, while recognizing that deletion does not establish reversal of any prior safety, feedback or training use.
The Bottom Line
Turn off the named training or activity switch before your next conversation, use temporary or incognito modes when offered, and treat feedback, safety review, retention, deletion and work-account policies as separate decisions. An opt-out narrows model-training use; it is not a universal privacy or erasure guarantee.
