Test the terminal emulator, shell, environment, terminfo database, tmux, editor integration, and remote host separately. A clean shell launch and a pair of TERM checks usually reveal whether the problem is startup code, capabilities, locale, or appearance.
Start with the layer that is actually failing
A Linux terminal is a chain of cooperating components, not one configuration file. The terminal emulator supplies a profile and a pseudo-terminal; a shell reads startup files; environment variables describe locale, paths, and terminal capabilities; ncurses uses terminfo data; and tmux or an editor can add another terminal layer. On SSH, containers, and WSL, the shell may run on a different host from the window you can see.

Write down the symptom and where it appears before editing anything:
- Launch failure: the terminal never opens or closes immediately.
- Prompt failure: the shell starts, but the prompt is missing, duplicated, or full of escape characters.
- Display failure: colors, cursor movement, or screen clearing are wrong.
- Character failure: Unicode, box-drawing, or prompt symbols are missing.
- Multiplexer failure: tmux changes colors, freezes, or shows no sessions.
- Profile failure: the font, palette, or encoding differs from the selected profile.
Keep a backup of every file before changing it. During diagnosis, make one change at a time and record the old value. Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code troubleshooting guidance uses the same rule: “Change one thing at a time and record the previous value so you can restore it after testing.”
#1 Best Overall
When the terminal will not start or closes immediately
First distinguish a launch error from a shell that starts and exits. Capture the complete message, including the configured executable, arguments, working directory, and any environment-setting error. A graphical terminal, an integrated terminal, and an SSH session can use different settings, so a fix for one is not automatically a fix for another.
Test the configured shell outside the editor
- Find the shell path configured for the failing terminal. Compare it with the account’s login shell and with the executable available on the same host.
- Run that executable directly from an already working terminal, using the same arguments and starting directory if possible.
- If the direct launch fails, fix the executable path, permissions, arguments, or working directory before changing prompt code.
- If the direct launch succeeds, the editor or terminal profile is supplying a different setting. Compare its shell path, arguments, environment, and initial directory.
For a remote terminal, perform these checks on the remote host. A local shell file cannot repair a missing shell, invalid path, or broken startup command on the server.
Use a clean shell to separate startup files from the shell itself
Run a shell without normal startup customization:
bash --noprofile --norc
For zsh, use:
zsh -f
If the clean shell remains open and behaves normally, the executable and pseudo-terminal are probably working. Inspect the startup files used by the failing mode, such as the login and interactive files for your shell, plus shell-integration snippets installed by an editor or prompt framework. Temporarily disable one command, start a new test shell, and restore it if the symptom does not change. Do not delete all dotfiles: that removes evidence and can break aliases, paths, and authentication helpers that were unrelated to the failure.

- A command that assumes an interactive shell runs during a non-interactive launch and exits with an error.
- A prompt script calls a program that is not installed or is missing from
PATH. - An unconditional
exec, exit, orreturnterminates the shell. - A syntax error prevents the rest of the file from being read.
- Shell integration emits control sequences that the current terminal does not understand.
Use the shell’s syntax checker where available, then re-enable commands one at a time. If only an integrated terminal fails while a standalone terminal works, keep the investigation within the editor’s terminal profile rather than rewriting global shell configuration.
Why colors are missing or wrong
Color is negotiated through terminal capabilities. The application asks the terminfo description named by TERM what the terminal can display; it does not simply assume that every terminal called “xterm” supports the same features. Some xterm entries omit color capabilities.
Check TERM on both sides of tmux
Run this outside tmux:
echo "$TERM"
Run it again inside a tmux window. The outside value should describe the real emulator. Inside tmux, the value should describe the tmux or screen-like interface presented to applications. The tmux project FAQ states: “PLEASE NOTE: most display problems are due to incorrect TERM! Before reporting problems make SURE that TERM settings are correct inside and outside tmux.”
Do not force a value merely because it is common in a configuration snippet. A value such as tmux-256color is appropriate only when that terminfo entry is installed on the host where applications run and the underlying terminal really supports the capabilities being declared. If a program receives a description that promises colors, mouse reporting, or cursor features unavailable in reality, it can render incorrectly.

Inspect the installed terminfo entry
Use infocmp to see what the current host knows about a terminal type:
infocmp "$TERM"
Run it both outside and inside tmux. If it reports that the entry is missing, install an appropriate terminfo package for the distribution or use a terminal type already present on that host. The tic compiler is for cases where you genuinely need to compile and install a terminfo description; it is not a general-purpose color repair command.
Check every hop in a remote workflow. Your local emulator, the SSH server, a container, and tmux may each have different terminfo databases. A setting that works locally can fail inside a minimal container because the corresponding entry was never installed there.
Use a reversible capability test
- Record the current outside and inside
TERMvalues. - Confirm each value with
infocmp. - Test the application outside tmux.
- Test it inside tmux with a terminfo entry that exists on that host.
- Only then change a tmux setting or shell export, and keep the previous value available for rollback.
Do not enable 256-color or other capabilities that the emulator, remote connection, or terminal description does not support. A narrower but truthful description is more reliable than a feature-rich name that is absent or inaccurate.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

tmux adds a second terminal interface. It receives escape sequences from applications, interprets them according to its own configuration and the outside terminal, then emits sequences for the emulator. That extra translation layer explains why a prompt can look correct before attaching tmux and fail immediately afterward.
Display problems
- Compare
TERMoutside and inside tmux. - Use
infocmpfor both values on the machine running the application. - Check whether a tmux configuration overrides terminal features or colors.
- Reproduce the issue with a plain shell inside a new tmux session to distinguish tmux from the prompt theme.
If the plain shell displays correctly but a full-screen application fails, inspect the application’s capability assumptions and tmux overrides rather than changing the emulator palette.
tmux freezes while attaching or running
The tmux FAQ documents a freeze associated with window-title setting. As a targeted test, add or issue:
set -g set-titles off
Restart or reload only after preserving the previous setting. If the freeze remains, capture the exact reproduction steps, tmux version, terminal type, host, and relevant configuration for a report. Avoid force-killing the parent shell as a first response; that can destroy the context needed to diagnose the fault.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorstmux says there are no sessions
A missing session message does not prove that session data was intentionally deleted. Check whether the tmux server is still running and whether its socket is available to the current user and environment. A changed socket path, a different user, a container boundary, or a stopped server can all make an existing workflow appear to have vanished. Use the FAQ’s socket and server diagnostics before removing files or killing processes.
Unicode, box-drawing, and prompt symbols are malformed
Start with locale, not the font. tmux checks LC_ALL, LC_CTYPE, and LANG when detecting UTF-8 support. Inspect the environment that reaches the failing program:
locale
printf 'LANG=%snLC_CTYPE=%snLC_ALL=%sn' "$LANG" "$LC_CTYPE" "$LC_ALL"
Confirm that the selected UTF-8 locale exists
The locale variables can name a UTF-8 locale that is not installed. Check the locale list provided by your distribution, then select an installed UTF-8 locale appropriate for the host. On a remote or container session, perform the check there; the local desktop’s locale list does not install data on another machine.
After correcting the locale, start a fresh shell or tmux server so the new environment is inherited. Do not change all three variables indiscriminately: understand which one is set by the login environment and which one overrides the others. Keep the change narrow and test the same character in a plain shell, inside tmux, and in the affected application.
Separate encoding errors from glyph coverage
If ordinary accented text works but line-drawing characters or prompt icons fail, the locale may already be correct. Check the terminal profile’s encoding, the selected font’s glyph coverage, and tmux’s documented terminal overrides. A font can lack a symbol even when UTF-8 decoding succeeds; changing locale cannot add a missing glyph.
GNOME Terminal exposes profile-level controls for character encoding and ambiguous-width characters. Those settings can alter how wide a Unicode symbol is treated, which affects alignment in prompts and full-screen programs. Test with a plain monospaced font and a simple prompt before reintroducing a symbol-heavy theme.
When the prompt looks wrong
A prompt combines shell syntax, external commands, escape sequences, colors, Unicode glyphs, and terminal-width calculations. Diagnose its dependencies in that order.
Check whether the shell can render a minimal prompt
In a clean shell, use a plain prompt appropriate to that shell. For bash, a temporary minimal value can be tested with:
PS1='u@h:w$ '
For zsh, a simple prompt can be tested with:
PS1='%n@%m:%~%# '
If the minimal prompt is correct, the theme or prompt plugin is responsible for the visual defect. Re-enable prompt components one at a time and watch for the first change. If even the minimal prompt is malformed, return to TERM, locale, font, and emulator-profile checks.
