If you submit a coding prompt, glance at another tab while the assistant works, check back repeatedly, then have to reconstruct what you were doing, the problem may be the workflow around the tool—not simply the time it takes to generate code. You can reduce those attention pulls by deciding when notifications appear, what to do with an in-progress request, and when a chat thread should end.
Find the source of the interruptions
Before changing settings, notice what is pulling you away. Different interruptions call for different fixes:
- Proactive suggestions: Inline completions or prompts invite you to evaluate code before you planned to.
- Notifications: A response or confirmation alert can interrupt work in another window.
- Parallel agent sessions: Several running tasks can create pressure to monitor each one or start something else while waiting.
- Overloaded chat context: A long thread about several unrelated tasks makes it harder to keep the current goal clear.
These controls address notifications, request handling, and chat boundaries. They do not turn off every kind of suggestion in every coding tool, so treat them as targeted adjustments rather than a universal focus switch.
Set VS Code chat notifications to match your focus block
Visual Studio Code documents two settings for chat notifications: chat.notifyWindowOnResponseReceived and chat.notifyWindowOnConfirmation. Each accepts off, windowNotFocused, or always; VS Code documents windowNotFocused as the default. See the VS Code AI settings reference.
#1 Best Overall

- Pillowed Wrist Rest: Curved wrist rest with memory foam layer offers typing comfort with 54 per cent more wrist support; 25 per cent less wrist bending compared to standard keyboard without palm rest
- Perfect Stroke Keys: Scooped keys match the shape of your fingertips so you can type with confidence on a wireless keyboard crafted for comfort, precision and fluidity
- Adjustable Palm Lift: Whether seated or standing, keep your wrists in total comfort and a natural typing posture with ergonomically-designed tilt legs of 0, -4 and -7 degrees
- Ergonomist Approved: The ERGO K860 wireless ergonomic keyboard is certified by United States Ergonomics to improve posture and lower muscle strain
Choose a mode deliberately
off: Do not show that notification. This is the most direct choice if alerts are prompting you to check the chat before your planned review point.windowNotFocused: Show it when the VS Code window is not focused. This preserves some background awareness without alerting you while you are working in VS Code.always: Show it regardless of whether the VS Code window is focused. Use this only if immediate awareness is worth the interruption.
To change either setting, open VS Code Settings, search for the exact setting name, and select a value from its menu. If you prefer editing settings JSON, set the corresponding key to one of the three documented strings, for example "chat.notifyWindowOnResponseReceived": "off". Apply the same choice independently to chat.notifyWindowOnConfirmation; the two controls cover different events.
VS Code says a notification can include a response preview, and selecting it can bring focus to the chat session. That behavior makes the notification itself a possible interruption, not just a neutral status light. The VS Code chat guide describes the notification behavior and in-progress message options.

Handle a running request without reflexively opening another task
When an agent is still working, VS Code offers three distinct choices for a new message. Choose according to whether the current request remains useful, needs adjustment, or should be abandoned:
- Queue the follow-up if the current response can finish first. The new message waits rather than interrupting the running request.
- Steer the current request if it needs redirection. VS Code signals the request to yield after its current tool execution.
- Stop and send only when you want to cancel the current request and submit the new message instead.
These options give you a way to respond to a changing task without automatically launching a separate thread or agent just because the current one is taking time. They do not guarantee how long a request will take or whether its result will be useful.

Keep chat context aligned with the task
Use one conversation for work that genuinely builds on the same goal: refining generated code, debugging the same error, or iterating on a design. Start a fresh conversation when you move to an unrelated problem, a new feature, or a different kind of work such as documentation or release preparation.
GitHub Docs explains that a Copilot message may be processed with conversation history and other context, and that longer threads can involve more context. Its guidance is to continue when prior work matters and start fresh when it does not: “Starting fresh helps Copilot focus on your new goal.” Read GitHub’s guidance on optimizing Copilot Chat context. This is a context-management rule for Copilot Chat, not a claim that every assistant handles history in exactly the same way.

- 【Wave Ergonomic Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Combo】The wireless keyboard features a wave key and wrist rest design that naturally fits your fingers and relieves wrist strain. The adjustable stand allows you to set the keyboard to the most comfortable height, making it ideal for long-term use. Note: The USB receiver is located on the back of the mouse.
- 【Wireless Optical Mouse】The wireless mouse is designed with comfort in mind, featuring a contoured shape that fits snugly in the palm and complements the natural curve of your right hand. All controls are easily within reach. This mouse is equipped with forward and back functions, allowing you to navigate the web faster and more efficiently than ever before.
- 【Plug-and-Play 2.4G Wireless Connection】One 2.4 GHz USB receiver can connect both the keyboard and mouse, or they can be used separately. Plug and play—no software download is required. The 2.4 GHz wireless connection offers a strong and reliable signal up to 33 feet (10 meters), without delays.

What the evidence says—and what it cannot tell you
There is evidence of changing IDE-window activity among AI-tool users, but it does not establish that AI tools caused developers to lose focus. JetBrains Research’s 2026 workflow study compared 400 JetBrains AI Assistant users with 400 non-users. The users had interacted with the assistant at least monthly during April–October 2024; telemetry tracked the same devices from October 2022 through October 2024. Across 800 users, the dataset contained 151,904,543 logged events. The study used IDE-window activations as a proxy for context switching and explicitly aimed to identify patterns, not causal effects. It reported about six more monthly IDE activations for AI users and about seven fewer for non-users over the study period. Those are study-specific telemetry results—not a count of distractions or a causal estimate of focus loss. See JetBrains Research’s study account.
A separate JetBrains blog post reports that 74% of surveyed AI-assisted developers did not notice increased switching, while the telemetry showed a different pattern. That is a survey finding about what respondents noticed, not an objective measure of switching or a result that cancels out the telemetry. See JetBrains’ account of AI tool switching.

A 2024 review in the International Journal of Human–Computer Interaction discusses how generative AI suggestions may interrupt flow, and considers design ideas such as stabilizing a task before presenting help, giving advance alerts, and timing suggestions thoughtfully. These are system-design principles discussed in a review, not proven personal techniques guaranteed to improve every developer’s focus. The review also emphasizes aligning suggestions with what the user is doing. Read “Ironies of Generative AI”.
Developers have also expressed interest in more control over assistant behavior. A 2026 JetBrains Research study surveyed 56 professional developers about 33 candidate settings and held design sessions with seven participants. Its report says nearly three quarters of settings were wanted and barely a third were believed to exist. That supports the value of configurable controls as a user concern; it does not show that implementing every proposed setting improves productivity. See JetBrains Research’s settings-preference study.
Quick Recap
Try a small, measurable workflow change
- Choose one deliberate work interval and one coding task.
- In VS Code, set response and confirmation notifications to
offorwindowNotFocused, depending on whether you need background awareness. - While a request runs, use queue, steer, or stop-and-send based on what should happen to that request; avoid opening another task solely to fill the wait.
- Keep related iterations in the same conversation, but start a new one when the task changes.
- At the end of the interval, note how often you checked the assistant and whether fewer checks made it easier to resume the task. This is a personal experiment, not a result established by the cited studies.
