For most newer Windows games, set the Logitech F710’s physical mode switch to X (XInput), connect its USB receiver, and check whether Steam and the game detect it. Logitech recommends XInput for new Windows games. Use D (DirectInput) for an older game that expects it, or when you want to customize controls with Logitech Gaming Software. The switch changes how the controller presents input; Steam Input and the game’s own settings are separate layers.
Set up the F710 and confirm it works
- Set the controller’s physical input-mode switch to X before launching the game. Logitech recommends this mode for new Windows games. Connect the F710’s wireless USB receiver.
- Open Steam and check whether the controller is detected, then launch the game and test its controls. Steamworks lists “Any DirectInput gamepad” among devices supported by Steam Input, but this is category-level documentation—not a promise that every game supports every F710 feature or mapping. Steam Input device documentation.
- If you change the physical switch while a game is running, restart the game if it does not recognize the F710. Logitech warns that a game may not identify the controller properly after a mode change.
There is no single verified, current Steam-client click path for configuring or calibrating this specific controller in the official material cited here. Steam menus and labels can change, so avoid relying on old step-by-step instructions. Configure controls through Steam or the game where those options are available, and verify the result in the game itself.

Choose between XInput and DirectInput
The F710’s hardware switch selects between two input modes. Choose the mode the game expects; Steam’s ability to recognize a controller does not ensure that a particular game supports its input style.
| Mode | When to try it | What to expect | Logitech control customization |
|---|---|---|---|
| X (XInput) | Most newer Windows games; Logitech recommends this for new games. | If you use X mode with a DirectInput game, Logitech’s setup guide says the left and right triggers may behave as one button and vibration may be unavailable. | Logitech Gaming Software cannot configure the F710 in XInput mode. |
| D (DirectInput) | An older game that expects DirectInput, or when you need the customization Logitech associates with this mode. | Compatibility and available features depend on the game; Steam Input’s device list includes any DirectInput gamepad, not guaranteed support in every title. | Logitech says its Gaming Software can customize controls in DirectInput mode. |
Logitech’s F710 setup guide describes the controller as supporting both XInput and DirectInput. Its compatibility notes concern a specific mismatch—using XInput mode with a DirectInput game—so do not assume the same trigger or vibration behavior applies to every game.
#1 Best Overall
- The 2.4 GHz wireless connection uses a tiny Plug-and-Forget Nano-receiver that stays in your USB port, even on laptops, for fast data transmission with minimal delays, dropouts, or interference.
- With broad game support, the Logitech Wireless Gamepad F710 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* Requires software installation
- Dual vibration motors let you feel every hit, crash and explosion in games that support vibration feedback for a more realistic and immersive experience
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on game console controllers
Configure mappings with the game’s support in mind
Steam Input can help translate controller inputs, but mappings still depend on what the game accepts. Steam Support notes that a selected input style may fail if a game does not support it, and gamepad-only bindings require a game with gamepad support. Its cited configuration guidance is for Steam Controller configurations, not a set of F710-specific calibration steps. Steam Support: “My configuration doesn’t work in a game”.
When a game does not respond as expected, first check its own controller options and whether it supports gamepad input. If it expects DirectInput, try switching the F710 to D before starting the game. If it expects a newer Windows controller interface, return to X mode. Restart the game after changing modes.

If Steam detects the F710 but the game does not
Work through the connection and Steam-level checks below. The hardware checks come from Logitech’s F710 setup guide; Steam Support’s overlay and software-conflict suggestions are general Steam troubleshooting advice, not F710-specific guarantees.

Reconnect the receiver and try a different USB port. Logitech says the receiver works best in a fully powered USB port; if using a hub, it should have its own power supply.
- Check power and batteries. Confirm the batteries make contact and try fresh batteries if needed.
- Improve the wireless connection. If the link is intermittent, try the included USB extension cable to position the receiver closer to the controller.
- Check Steam Overlay. Steam Support suggests checking whether the overlay appears and is enabled when controller configuration is not working.
- Look for software conflicts. Third-party controller software or an external launcher’s overlay may interfere. Temporarily rule those out when troubleshooting.
- Restart the computer. Logitech’s setup guide includes restarting as a troubleshooting step.
When Logitech software is relevant
Logitech associates Gaming Software customization with DirectInput mode and says the software cannot configure the F710 in XInput mode. Logitech also says it does not provide controller configuration software for non-Windows systems. If you need software-based control customization, select D mode and confirm the game’s input expectations before changing the mapping.
