How to Stop a Suspicious Program from Starting Automatically in Windows

Turn off an unwanted startup app in Windows 11, learn where to look when it is missing, and understand why disabling it is not the same as removing malware.

To stop a listed app from launching automatically in Windows 11, turn it off at Start > Settings > Apps > Startup, or use Task Manager > Startup apps and select Disable. This prevents that startup entry from running automatically; it does not prove the app is malware or remove it from your PC. If you suspect infection, scan separately with Microsoft Defender.

Disable the startup entry in Windows

Microsoft supports two built-in ways to manage apps registered to start with Windows. Settings is the quickest route; Task Manager also shows startup-impact information. These steps are documented for Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Use Settings for a direct on/off switch

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup.
  2. Find the app you do not want to launch automatically and switch its toggle off.

The change applies to the startup behavior of that app. It does not uninstall the program or establish whether it is safe.

Use Task Manager to see startup impact

  1. Right-click Start and open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Select the app, then choose Disable.

Task Manager’s impact label describes measured startup resource use, not malware risk. Microsoft documents these thresholds: Low Impact is below 300 milliseconds of CPU time and below 292 kilobytes of disk activity; Medium Impact is below 1 second but above 300 milliseconds of CPU time, or below 3 megabytes but above 292 kilobytes of disk activity; High Impact is above 1 second of CPU time or above 3 megabytes of disk activity. A high-impact app is not automatically suspicious, and an unfamiliar name alone is not proof of infection. “Not Measured” means the enabled item has no impact data available; “None” is the category for a disabled item. Microsoft’s startup-app guidance explains the controls and categories.

If the program is not listed

Some programs are configured outside the registered startup-app list. Microsoft documents startup folders and Run registry locations as alternate places to check. Start with the folder; editing the registry is advanced troubleshooting and can cause unintended problems.

Check the startup folders

Open File Explorer and enter shell:startup in its address bar to inspect the current user’s Startup folder. To inspect the all-users folder, enter shell:common startup. If you recognize a shortcut as the unwanted program, removing the shortcut from the relevant folder stops that shortcut from launching at sign-in; it does not uninstall the app. Do not delete files you cannot identify.

Leave registry changes to advanced troubleshooting

Windows also has Run locations for the current user and all users. Microsoft advises caution with registry changes and recommends backing up the registry before editing it. If you are not comfortable identifying the correct entry and restoring a backup, do not delete registry values; seek trusted technical help instead. The Microsoft instructions for startup applications describe these locations and the associated caution.

Scan separately if you think the program may be malware

Disabling an entry only changes whether it starts automatically. It is not a virus scan, and it does not necessarily remove the program or stop other components from running. If there are other signs of infection or the program keeps returning, use Windows Security to scan the PC.

Choose a scan in Windows Security

  1. Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection, then choose Quick scan to check common locations.
  3. For a broader check, choose Scan options and select a Full scan or Custom scan, then start the scan.

Microsoft documents these scan choices and their use in its Microsoft Defender scanning guidance. A potentially unwanted app is not necessarily malware, but if you do not want it, Microsoft recommends removing it through Settings, updating security intelligence and scanning, and using Defender Offline if it persists. See Microsoft’s guidance on unwanted software.

Use Defender Offline for a threat that persists or returns

Some threats can hide while Windows is running or reinstall after a restart. Microsoft Defender Offline scans after the PC restarts, outside the normal Windows session, which can help with threats that are harder to detect in that environment. Save open work before starting because the scan requires a restart. After the PC starts again, check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history for results. The scan options and restart behavior are covered in Microsoft’s Windows Security overview; guidance for recurring threats is in Microsoft’s malware troubleshooting article.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft’s startup instructions cover Windows 10 as well as Windows 11, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, free Windows Update updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended. The documented startup controls may still be available, but disabling an app does not address the security risk of using an unsupported Windows release. See Microsoft’s Windows startup settings page.
