Use Shazam first if the song is playing in a video on the same phone. Apple documents Shazam identifying music from other apps such as TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram on iPhone, iPad, and Android. If you can only remember the melody—or direct audio capture does not work—try SoundHound or Google’s hum-to-search instead.
Which app should you use?
| Option | Best for | How to access it |
|---|---|---|
| Shazam | A song currently playing in a video app on the same phone | iPhone and iPad: Shazam app, Control Center, Siri, or a widget. Android: Shazam app, Quick Settings, notification, Pop-up Shazam, or Auto Shazam. Features can vary by country and device. |
| SoundHound | A song you can hear, sing, or hum | Use the app and ask “What song am I humming?” or sing/hum the melody. Its basic service is free; its Infinity edition is a one-time purchase for an ad-free experience. |
| Google Search hum-to-search | A melody you can hum, whistle, or sing | Use Google’s hum-search feature to find likely matches. Google’s explanation does not establish current availability on every phone or in every region. |
Shazam is the most directly documented choice for identifying audio playing inside another app; that is a workflow recommendation, not an accuracy ranking. The official sources reviewed do not provide a controlled head-to-head accuracy comparison of these services.

Identify a song playing in a video with Shazam
On iPhone or iPad
- Open Apple’s Shazam guide and follow its instructions to add Shazam Music Recognition to Control Center.
- Play the video with its audio enabled, then open Control Center and tap the Shazam Music Recognition button.
- Check the notification for the match. Depending on your account and settings, the result may also be saved in Shazam.
You can also ask Siri to identify the music. Control Center is useful when you want to keep the video open while Shazam listens.

If you are using headphones
Shazam’s Google Play listing describes a Share Screen permission that can temporarily access device audio output for identification while headphones are connected. This may make same-phone identification possible without using the phone’s microphone, but success depends on the country, app version, operating system, permissions, and device. Follow the permission prompt shown on your phone; do not assume this workflow is available everywhere.
When humming works better than capturing the video
SoundHound
If the clip cannot play while you use the recognizer, or if you remember the tune but not the recording, try SoundHound. Its support instructions document both voice requests and singing or humming a melody. You can ask, “What song am I humming?” SoundHound’s help page says its basic service is free and that Infinity is a one-time purchase for an ad-free experience; see its pricing information for current details.
Rank #2
Google Search hum-to-search
Google’s hum-to-search explainer describes searching by humming, whistling, or singing a tune and returning likely matches. As Google puts it, “All we need is a hum”—but that describes the input, not a guarantee that every melody will match. The explainer also discusses Pixel Now Playing and Google app SoundSearch historically; it does not confirm current support on every phone or in every region.
What to try if no match appears
- Let the song play for a little longer, if the video allows it, and try again during a section with less speech or sound effects.
- Check that the video audio is audible and that Shazam has the permission it requests. If you are using headphones, the system-audio workflow may not be supported on your setup.
- Try another route: switch from Shazam to SoundHound or Google hum-to-search, or hum the melody if you can reproduce it.
- Keep expectations realistic for very short or heavily edited clips. The official sources cited here do not establish comparative success rates for those conditions or for noisy environments.
Listen to the song after Shazam finds it
Shazam’s official app page describes the app as free. Its Google Play listing names Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, and Deezer as services where you can open a matched track. Those are follow-on listening destinations, not requirements for identifying the song; playing a full track may require a separate subscription.
