To stop a robot vacuum getting stuck, clear loose cables and small clutter before a run, secure cables that must stay, and use a supported map exclusion for repeat problem spots. For rugs and thresholds, check the exact model’s carpet settings and climbing limit; there is no universal rug-height or threshold rule. If the robot still struggles after you clear the route, inspect it and consult its model-specific troubleshooting guidance.
Why robot vacuums get stuck
Robot vacuums can snag on objects that are difficult to detect or cross. Thin cables and shoelaces may lie nearly flat, while a thick rug edge or raised threshold can exceed a particular robot’s ability. How to stop a robot vacuum getting stuck on cords
Remove loose cords before cleaning
Pick up charging leads, loose cables, shoelaces, and other small clutter before starting a run. Xiaomi warns that brushes can tangle with power cords or charging cables; eufy notes that thin, elongated objects lying flat can be difficult for the Omni C30 Edge to detect. For cables that need to remain in place, eufy recommends using cable ties or a cable-management box. These can reduce exposed loose cable, but they do not guarantee that every robot will avoid every cable. Set a map exclusion for persistent trouble spots
Manufacturers use different names and app controls for mapped exclusions. Xiaomi describes virtual walls and restricted areas; Dyson and eufy document avoid or no-go areas. The feature and its menu path depend on the model and app, so check the manual or support page for your robot rather than assuming every app has the same controls. What to do when a robot vacuum gets stuck on a rug
Check the rug and carpet settings
A rug’s height and edge can matter, but the sources do not establish a universal rug-height limit. Xiaomi says an excessively high carpet may stop its X20 Pro from passing. Xiaomi’s Robot Vacuum 6 Max FAQ describes carpet map settings for either carpet avoidance or crossing; those controls are specific to that model, and other robots may use different settings or labels. Exclude an edge that repeatedly traps the robot
If the robot repeatedly catches on a particular rug or edge, use a supported avoid area or restricted zone around it. Dyson says an avoid area can cover places with cables, clothing, or toys where the robot might get stuck; Xiaomi and eufy also document map restrictions. The controls vary by model and app. The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish that rug tape, grippers, or pads are a generally effective fix, so do not count on them without advice that applies to your specific rug and robot.

Check the published climbing limit for your exact model and compare it with the threshold. Manufacturer figures differ, and they are not results from a shared test protocol, so they should not be treated as a controlled brand ranking.

If a threshold is beyond your model’s stated limit, or the robot repeatedly fails there, use a supported map exclusion if available. Dyson says its robot can be moved manually to a chosen area, but it may not return to its dock for emptying, cleaning, or charging. Dyson troubleshooting.

For the Xiaomi X20 Pro, Xiaomi’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for tangled wheels, low battery, dirty obstacle-avoidance sensors, and obstacles or carpets that are too high. It also notes that low light and certain small, dark, reflective, or transparent objects can affect detection, and advises checking for app and firmware updates.
