Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf your PS5 makes noise when a disc spins, check the disc’s orientation and condition, then test another supported disc. If the sound may be the cooling fan instead, improve airflow and clear dust from the vents. PlayStation does not publish a noise-specific disc-drive repair procedure; persistent mechanical noise or reading problems should be referred to PlayStation Support.
First, work out whether the sound is from the fan or a disc
Notice when the noise starts and where it seems to come from. A sound that begins while a disc loads, spins, or ejects may be related to the optical drive; noise that rises during demanding games or applications may come from the cooling fan. These are clues, not a definitive remote diagnosis. Also note whether the console reads and ejects discs normally.

| What you notice | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Noise occurs while a disc is loading or spinning | Check that the disc is supported, correctly inserted, and clean; then try another supported disc. |
| Noise grows during some games or applications | Check ventilation and nearby dust. PlayStation says the cooling fan may run louder than usual during some games and applications. |
| Disc will not eject | Use PlayStation’s manual-eject instructions for your console; do not pull the disc out by force. |
| Repeated unusual noise, reading errors, or failed ejection | Contact PlayStation Repairs rather than opening or lubricating the drive. |
If the noise may be coming from the cooling fan
Fan noise is separate from a disc-drive fault. PlayStation recommends keeping the vents clear, leaving at least 10 cm of free space around each side of the console, and avoiding long-fiber carpet or cramped spaces. This is ventilation advice, not a remedy demonstrated to quiet the optical drive. See PlayStation’s ventilation guidance.
- Move the console away from enclosed shelves or other cramped spaces and keep its vents unobstructed.
- If dust is visible near the vents, turn off and unplug the console before cleaning. PlayStation recommends using a low-powered vacuum near the vents.
Check the disc before blaming the drive
- Confirm the media is supported. Try a PS5 game disc, Blu-ray Disc, or DVD. PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs.
- Check orientation. With the console vertical on its stand, the label faces left as you insert the disc. For other placements, consult the instructions for your model.
- Clean the disc if needed. Use a clean, lint-free cloth made for Blu-ray Discs or DVDs, wiping from the center toward the edge. PlayStation’s manual advises against solvents and chemicals.
- Test another supported disc. If only one disc causes trouble, its condition may be relevant. If several supported discs produce the same unusual noise or reading problem, seek repair support.
Cleaning can address dirt on the disc surface; it does not establish that the drive mechanism itself will become quieter. See PlayStation’s disc troubleshooting steps.

If a disc is stuck, use the manual-eject procedure
A stuck disc is an ejection problem, not a reason to force the drive. PlayStation’s procedure requires powering down the console, disconnecting its cables, and using a #1 Phillips (cross-hatch) screwdriver. Follow the manual-eject instructions for your PS5 model exactly. Do not pull the disc forcibly, and do not turn on or play the console while its cover is off.
When to contact PlayStation Repairs
After checking the disc and ruling out obvious airflow issues, contact PlayStation Repairs if unusual drive noise persists, discs are not read reliably, or ejection fails. PlayStation’s support guidance says: “If these troubleshooting steps don’t fix the issue, please visit PlayStation Repairs.” Its public guidance does not specify a noise threshold or a noise-specific repair, so avoid unsupported drive teardown or lubrication advice.

Check compatibility before considering a separate disc drive
A separately sold add-on disc drive is not established as a fix for noise. PlayStation says it fits CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. The UK product information says the CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support disc media, while the add-on drive can be used with CFI-2000 Digital Edition and CFI-7000 consoles.
