How to Stop a Pixel’s Offline Location Finding When It’s Powered Off

Turn off a Pixel’s offline finding in Settings > Security > Find Hub > Find your offline devices. Offline recovery is distinct from live GPS broadcasting and device-wide Location.

To stop a Pixel from being found through Google’s offline-finding network after it powers down, change Find your offline devices to Off in Settings > Security > Find Hub. This disables offline finding; it does not mean the phone was secretly broadcasting a live GPS location. Google describes the feature as using encrypted recent locations and reports from nearby Android devices.

What happens when a Pixel is powered off?

On supported models, Google’s Find Hub network can help locate a phone for several hours after it is powered off or its battery runs out. Google currently lists the Pixel 8, Pixel 9, and Pixel 10 series for this powered-off finding. Bluetooth and Location must be on when the phone shuts down, and an appropriate offline-finding option must be selected. Google describes the duration as “several hours”; it does not promise a precise time window. See Google’s Android setup guide and Pixel setup guide.

This is not ordinary live GPS transmission from a powered-down phone. Google says Find Hub uses encrypted recent locations and a network in which nearby Android devices can contribute reports. That distinction matters: turning off offline finding changes whether the device participates in this recovery feature, not whether it was secretly broadcasting a continuous location.

How to turn off offline finding

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Security, then Find Hub.
  3. Tap Find your offline devices.
  4. Select Off.

Menu labels or availability may vary by Android version. Google’s Pixel instructions show this settings path.

What each offline-finding option means

Setting Effect
Without network Keeps encrypted recent locations for offline recovery but does not use the broader device network to locate the phone or items.
With network in busy places only Uses network assistance in crowded areas. Google describes aggregation of location information from multiple detecting Android devices as a privacy safeguard.
With network everywhere Extends network assistance to remote as well as busy areas; Google says this may help find items quicker.
Off Turns off offline-finding features.

The choices balance the chance of finding an offline phone or item against participation in the crowdsourced network. The options may differ by device or Android version. Google explains them in its Find Hub privacy guide.

Does this also turn off Location or online Find Hub?

No. Turning offline finding off is separate from the device-wide Location control. Google says you can still use Find Hub to locate, secure, or erase a device while it is online. The Location setting separately controls whether apps and services can get the phone’s location; see Google’s Pixel location settings guide.

If your concern is apps or services accessing location while the phone is on, review the separate Location control and app permissions rather than assuming the offline-finding switch covers them.

If you want powered-off recovery instead

Keep an appropriate network option enabled, and make sure Bluetooth and Location are on when shutting down a supported Pixel. The phone may then be findable for several hours after power-off or battery depletion, but Google does not guarantee an exact duration or that every search will succeed. The network setting you choose determines whether assistance is limited to busy places or also extends to remote areas.
