Hydrogen is the best starting point if you want a dedicated free drum machine for building patterns. Choose LMMS if you want to program drums as part of a broader music-production project. Both are free; the right choice depends on whether you need focused drum sequencing or a full-track workflow.
Which free drum machine should you choose?
| Your need | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated drum patterns and drum synthesis | Hydrogen | Hydrogen describes itself as a pattern-based drum sequencer and drum synth, with MIDI support. Hydrogen project repository |
| Drums within a larger music-production project | LMMS | LMMS is a broader DAW with a beat/bassline editor, sound-generation tools, MIDI controls, and the ability to import Hydrogen files. LMMS FAQ |
Why Hydrogen is the best dedicated free option
Hydrogen is built around drum programming rather than serving as an all-purpose production environment. Its pattern-based approach is a natural fit for creating and arranging beats, and the project also describes it as a drum synthesizer. MIDI support is available, but you can program patterns without owning a MIDI keyboard or controller.

The project lists Linux, macOS, and Windows support. Its repository lists Windows 64-bit builds for Windows Vista or newer and macOS builds for macOS 10.14 or newer. The official download search result listed version 1.2.7 as the current stable release for Linux and Windows at the time it was checked. Check the Hydrogen downloads page for the current installer and release details; the version number may have changed.
When LMMS is a better fit
LMMS makes more sense when drums are one element of a complete track. Its documentation describes a DAW with a beat/bassline editor, synthesizers, other sound-generation features, and MIDI controls. LMMS can also import Hydrogen files, so you can create patterns in Hydrogen and bring them into a wider project. See the LMMS FAQ for workflow details.

A MIDI keyboard can be used to play while composing or performing, but it is optional. LMMS also supports composing with its on-screen tools; a controller is not a prerequisite for making beats. LMMS MIDI documentation
Pay attention to release labels when downloading. The LMMS download page showed version 1.3.0-alpha.2 as a prerelease, not a stable release, and notes that alpha builds can involve stability or compatibility risks. Check sample and kit licenses before sharing music
The software being free does not automatically make every drum kit or sample bundled with it free to reuse. Hydrogen’s manual warns that when a kit’s license is unspecified, you must not assume it is Creative Commons or otherwise open. Check the license for each kit or sample you use, especially before distributing or monetizing a track. Hydrogen manual
How to decide
- Choose Hydrogen if your priority is a focused, pattern-based drum sequencer and drum synth.
- Choose LMMS if you want to build drums into a broader arrangement with other instruments and production tools.
- Check the current installer and operating-system requirements on the project’s download page rather than relying on old compatibility lists.
- Review kit and sample licenses separately from the software license.
- Treat a MIDI keyboard or controller as optional hardware, not a requirement.
