Then delete any old entries—including pinned clips—and disable clipboard syncing if it is enabled. These are separate steps: preventing future capture does not erase saved history, and clearing one clipboard does not necessarily clear a manager’s archive.
First identify which clipboard history is saving the text
Your operating system and any clipboard manager can keep separate histories. Turning off Windows clipboard history, for example, does not automatically stop a third-party app from recording copies. Likewise, an app exclusion does not remove items it already saved. Check both the system clipboard settings and the clipboard manager you use, and follow that app’s own controls.

In a manager’s settings, look for controls named Ignore Applications, sensitive-content filtering, pause capture, history, retention, or sync. Do not assume another app has the same options or detects every password. Encrypted storage is still storage: encryption can affect who can read retained clips, but it does not mean the manager stopped saving them.
Turn off Windows clipboard history and sync
Microsoft’s instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. Open Settings > System > Clipboard. Turn off Clipboard history to stop Windows’ history feature. If you do not want copied items shared across devices, also turn off Clipboard history across devices. Microsoft says this sync is tied to the signed-in Microsoft or work account. Windows history can hold up to 25 copied entries. When it needs room, Windows removes older unpinned entries; that limit is not a substitute for clearing sensitive clips. Microsoft’s guidance also says history normally clears when the PC restarts, except for pinned entries. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so these steps do not imply that Windows 10 continues to receive security fixes. Microsoft Support documents the Windows controls and support notice.
Clear existing Windows entries
- Press Windows key + V and choose Clear all, or open Settings > System > Clipboard and choose Clear.
- Review pinned entries separately. Microsoft says clearing removes everything except pinned items; unpin and delete any sensitive clips individually.
- If clipboard history across devices was enabled, review the relevant device and cloud history as well. Microsoft describes the clear action as clearing everything except pinned items on the device and in the cloud, but do not assume that this also clears a separate third-party manager’s archive. Configure a third-party clipboard manager
Settings vary by app. If you want to keep a manager for ordinary text, prefer an exclusion for your password manager or another source of sensitive copies. Then delete any existing password entries from the manager’s history and any pinned or favorites area; an exclusion generally affects future copies, not old clips.

Paste on macOS
Paste provides several controls in Paste Settings > Privacy: add an app to Ignore Applications, enable Ignore confidential content, or pause Paste temporarily with Command-T or from its menu bar. Paste says exclusions apply to future copies, so delete previously saved clips manually. Its guidance also warns that some password-manager browser extensions copy in a way Paste cannot detect as confidential, and those copies may still be saved. Its suggested alternatives are copying from the password manager’s desktop app or excluding the browser; excluding a browser also skips all copies made in it. Paste’s privacy instructions describe the controls and limitation.

Do not infer that another manager has Paste’s settings or detection behavior. For example, the CopyPaste project repository says its Windows and macOS software ignores passwords and password-manager copies. Clipman documents options for ignoring applications, honoring supported private-clipboard signals, and filtering values likely to be sensitive. These are project statements and configurable features, not independent tests or guarantees that every password will be detected. Use Edge’s site policy only for site-specific control
In managed environments, administrators can use Microsoft Edge’s ClipboardBlockedForUrls policy to block clipboard use on specified sites. Microsoft lists support from Edge 109 on Windows and macOS, and Edge 146 on Android; iOS is listed as unsupported. This is a browser policy for selected sites—not a switch for Windows or macOS clipboard history, and not a universal exclusion for clipboard managers. Microsoft Learn: ClipboardBlockedForUrls.

If a password has already been captured
- Delete the item from the clipboard manager’s history, including any pinned or favorites area.
- Clear the operating system’s clipboard history and check whether sync was enabled. Use the relevant platform controls to review synced copies; also check the clipboard manager’s own devices or account if it syncs separately.
- Before copying another secret, configure an app exclusion or turn off history and sync. If the manager cannot reliably filter password copies, pause or disable its capture feature and use autofill or direct password-manager integration where available.
- Decide whether the password itself needs changing based on who could access the history and whether it synced to a shared account, device, or untrusted service. A local saved clip alone does not prove another person accessed it; rotate the credential if it was exposed beyond a device or account you trust.
