How to stop 7 days to die server safely
You can issue the commands from the in-game admin console, a web console, Telnet, or your hosting panel’s console. The order matters because it gives the server an explicit save before the graceful shutdown.

saveworld. The shorter alias issa. - Wait for the save to complete or for the console to return normally.
- Run
shutdown. - Check the server process and service status. Continue only when
7DaysToDieServerhas actually exited. - Start the server again only after the old process is gone.
If the server is empty because every player has disconnected, this is still the correct manual procedure. There is no established built-in rule in the available documentation that automatically saves, pauses, or shuts down a server solely because its player count reaches zero.
What the 7 Days to Die shutdown command does

shutdown is not the same as closing a console window or terminating a process. A graceful command gives the server a chance to finish its save operations and close its services in the expected order.

How to shut down 7 days to die dedicated server from each console
In-game admin console
Join the server with an account that has administrator permission, open the game’s command console, and enter the two commands one at a time. Do not paste them as a single unverified line: you want to see that the save command was accepted before requesting shutdown.
Web or hosting-panel console
Open the panel’s live server console, send saveworld (or sa), and then send shutdown. Keep the panel open long enough to confirm that the instance changes to an offline or stopped state. A panel can report that players are disconnected before the underlying executable has finished closing, so verify the process if the panel exposes process information.

Telnet
Telnet access depends on the server configuration. The commonly documented default is TelnetEnabled=true on port 8081. When no Telnet password is configured, the listener is restricted to the local loopback interface rather than accepting connections from the wider network. If you connect remotely, configure authentication and network access deliberately instead of exposing an unauthenticated console.

After connecting, send the same save-then-shutdown sequence. A scripted stop can fail even when the server itself is healthy if the wrapper uses the wrong configuration variable for the Telnet password; one reported LinuxGSM issue involved a mismatch between telnetpass and telnetpassword. Check the wrapper’s variable names against your installed version.
Getting permission to run server commands
Dedicated-server commands are restricted by default. If the console rejects saveworld or shutdown with a permission error, grant administrator access before trying again.
Add an administrator
- Find the permissions file named by
AdminFileNameinserverconfig.xml. - The file is stored in the server’s Saves folder unless your configuration changes that location.
- Add the platform user ID using the server’s admin syntax, for example
admin add <platform user id> 0. - Level
0is the highest permission level in the documented example. - Reconnect or reload permissions as required by your server build, then test a harmless command before stopping the server.
Protect serveradmin.xml and serverconfig.xml as you would any other server credentials. Do not publish platform IDs, Telnet passwords, or panel tokens in public scripts or chat.

Why you should not kill the server process
Force-closing the executable can interrupt a chunk write or player-data write. Community guidance warns that terminating during this operation can corrupt the chunk being written, while shutdown is intended to save before it stops. This is practical community advice rather than a formal guarantee from the game’s developer, but it is the safer operating assumption.
Closing the terminal, pressing a host panel’s emergency-stop button, using Task Manager’s “End task,” or sending a kill signal all bypass the normal shutdown path. Use those only as an emergency recovery measure after you have accepted the possibility of save damage and followed your host’s recovery procedure.
7 days to die server not saving or server won’t stop
The console says you are not allowed to run the command
Confirm that you are connected to the dedicated server console rather than a player chat box, and verify that your account appears in serveradmin.xml at the required level. If AdminFileName points to a different file, editing another copy will have no effect. Restarting the server may be required before a changed permissions file is read.

The command is unknown
Command lists on the internet can describe older builds. Enter help in your own server console and check the command names and aliases reported by the version you installed. In particular, do not assume that an old list’s syntax or alias still applies after an update.

A 2024 Steam discussion reported a case in which shutdown disconnected players and made the server appear offline while 7DaysToDieServer.exe continued running. The report did not establish a confirmed fix. Treat this as a separate state from a completed shutdown.
- Do not launch a second server instance on the same files or ports.
- Check the host panel, service manager, or operating-system process list for
7DaysToDieServer. - Allow time for the process to finish closing and inspect the server log for the last save and shutdown messages.
- If the process remains unresponsive, make a copy of the Saves directory before taking any forceful action.
- Use your host’s documented recovery steps; understand that force termination can damage data if a write is still in progress.
The Telnet stop script fails
First test an interactive Telnet connection from the permitted interface. Confirm that TelnetEnabled, the port, the password, and any firewall rule agree. Then inspect the script or wrapper for the exact password-variable name expected by your installed release. A variable mismatch can make a script report failure even though manual console commands work.

The server restarts but progress looks wrong
Some community discussions describe the in-game day appearing to reset after a restart, but the reported titles do not establish the cause or a verified fix. Before restarting, use the graceful sequence and retain the relevant logs. If the problem repeats, compare the active Saves path, world name, and configuration used by the restart service; launching a different instance or save location can look like a rollback.

The available documentation does not establish an official “stop when empty” switch. An automatic stop therefore has to be operator-built and should be tested against the exact server version.
A safe automation design has four parts:
- Player-count check: poll the server’s connected-player count at a sensible interval rather than reacting to a single transient disconnect.
- Empty grace period: require the count to remain zero for a defined period so a brief reconnect does not trigger a stop.
- Graceful commands: send
saveworld, wait for completion, then sendshutdownthrough an authenticated console channel. - Process verification: confirm that the server process has exited before allowing a restart job or marking the host available.
Keep the script’s credentials outside source control, log each decision, and test it while you have a recent backup. A script that merely kills the process when the player count is zero defeats the purpose of a safe shutdown.
A controlled restart routine
For planned maintenance, announce the restart with the server’s say command, take the extra save checkpoint, and optionally record state with loggamestate. Then perform the graceful shutdown and verify process exit before launching the new instance. The announcement gives players time to leave safely; the state log gives you an additional diagnostic record if the next start behaves unexpectedly.
Do not treat a successful player disconnect as proof that the save completed. The executable’s exit and the presence of the expected save files are the meaningful checks before a restart.
