How to Set Up RStudio Server on an Ubuntu VPS

A practical guide to installing RStudio Server on an Ubuntu VPS, from choosing a supported Ubuntu LTS image and installing R to PAM authentication, firewall rules, TLS, and startup troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run RStudio Server on an Ubuntu VPS, install R first, install the Ubuntu/Debian package that matches your Ubuntu release and CPU architecture, verify the service, and then protect its web endpoint before allowing internet access. A default installation listens on TCP port 8787, uses the server’s PAM login policy, and has SSL disabled.

The procedure below covers Ubuntu preparation, R and RStudio Server installation, browser access, user authentication, firewall and TLS decisions, upgrades, and the log checks that explain most startup failures.

Choose a supported Ubuntu image before you install

Use an Ubuntu LTS image rather than an end-of-life release. Posit’s platform-support information lists Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS for server deployments. The vendor support dates shown by Posit are 30 April 2027 for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and 30 April 2029 for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.

Ubuntu release Posit platform listing Vendor support date shown by Posit
22.04 LTS Supported server platform 2027-04-30
24.04 LTS Supported server platform 2029-04-30

Posit’s current download page also displays RStudio Server packages for Ubuntu 22, 24, and 26. Treat the download page as the authority for the package and release combination available when you install; a package listing does not by itself establish the lifecycle policy for every Ubuntu release.

Check the VPS architecture and baseline resources

Before downloading anything, identify the architecture reported by Ubuntu:

dpkg --print-architecture

Use the package whose architecture matches that result. Do not install an amd64 package on an arm64 VPS, or the reverse. RStudio Server is an interactive development service, so choose a VPS with enough memory and disk for the R packages, data sets, and concurrent sessions your users will open. The official installation material does not publish a universal CPU or RAM minimum; sizing is therefore a workload decision rather than a fixed product specification.

Create an administrator account without using root interactively

Log in over SSH with the account supplied by your VPS provider, create a normal administrator, and grant it sudo access. For example:

sudo adduser analystadmin
sudo usermod -aG sudo analystadmin

Open a second SSH session as analystadmin and confirm that sudo works before changing the original account or SSH policy:

sudo -v
sudo whoami

The second command should print root. RStudio Server logins should use regular Linux users, not the root account and not service accounts intended only to run daemons.

Prepare networking, DNS, and the firewall

Give the VPS a stable address, or point a DNS name at its current public address. A browser can reach the service only when all of these paths work: the RStudio process is listening, the VPS firewall permits the connection, any cloud firewall permits it, and the DNS name resolves to the correct host.

Update the operating system

Run the normal package refresh and security update before installing R:

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade

Reboot if the kernel or another core component was upgraded, then reconnect by SSH and confirm the release:

cat /etc/os-release
uname -m

Keep SSH available while you test web access. A firewall mistake that blocks port 22 can lock you out before RStudio Server is working.

Decide who may reach port 8787

The default service port is 8787. During a private test, permit it only from your own IP address or VPN network. If you later put HTTPS in front of RStudio Server, keep the application port private and expose only the reverse proxy’s HTTPS listener. If your provider has both a cloud firewall and an Ubuntu firewall, the connection must be allowed by both.

Install R before RStudio Server

R is a prerequisite. RStudio Server launches R sessions for authenticated users, so installing the server package first does not remove the need for an R runtime.

Use an Ubuntu-compatible R installation method

Choose the R package source appropriate for the Ubuntu release you selected. The goal is an R installation that can coexist with the versions your projects require and that will not unexpectedly replace an existing version during ordinary package updates. For a basic distribution-package installation, the Ubuntu repositories provide the familiar workflow:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install r-base

When projects require more than one R version, plan that version management before installing project packages. Record which executable and libraries each project uses, and test an upgrade on a staging VPS before changing a production host. The RStudio Server package does not choose a project’s R version for you.

Confirm that R runs for the administrator

R --version
R --vanilla

At the R prompt, run a small expression such as sessionInfo(), then leave with q(). This verifies that the executable starts independently of the web service. If R itself fails, fix the repository, architecture, or library problem before proceeding.

Download and install the matching RStudio Server package

Open Posit’s official RStudio Server download page and select the Ubuntu/Debian .deb package for the Ubuntu release and architecture reported by your VPS. The available package family changes over time, so use the filename and release shown on that page rather than copying an old version number from a tutorial.

Install the downloaded Debian package

After downloading the file into a directory such as ~/Downloads, install it with APT so dependencies are resolved:

cd ~/Downloads
sudo apt install ./rstudio-server-*.deb

The wildcard is intentional: it uses the package you actually downloaded without embedding a stale version string. If APT reports an architecture mismatch or an unsatisfied dependency, stop and obtain the package for the release and architecture reported by dpkg --print-architecture; do not force installation with a different package.

The package creates the RStudio Server configuration location at /etc/rstudio/rserver.conf. The default service listens on port 8787 and is installed without SSL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the systemd unit

sudo systemctl status rstudio-server
sudo systemctl enable --now rstudio-server

enable --now starts the service immediately and configures it to start at boot. If it is already running, the command is harmless. A green systemd status is useful, but it is not a substitute for the RStudio-specific verification command.

Verify the installation locally and through a browser

Run Posit’s verification command exactly as provided by the installation documentation:

sudo rstudio-server verify-installation

This checks the installation and the local R connection. It does not prove that an external browser can reach the VPS, that DNS points to the right address, or that a user can pass the configured authentication policy.

Perform the first connectivity check

  1. Confirm the service is listening on the VPS with sudo systemctl status rstudio-server.
  2. From a browser that can reach the host, open http://SERVER_ADDRESS:8787, replacing SERVER_ADDRESS with the VPS address or DNS name.
  3. Sign in with a regular Linux username and its system password.
  4. Open an R session and run a simple command such as sessionInfo().

Use plain HTTP only for this initial, restricted connectivity test. The default installation has no SSL, so do not treat a successful login at this address as a secure public deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand PAM authentication and user accounts

RStudio Server authenticates through the server’s Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM) configuration. Posit describes the behavior as authenticating access with the PAM scheme configured for the server.

Default Ubuntu behavior

On Debian and Ubuntu, the normal system PAM profile is used unless you configure an RStudio-specific profile. In the usual case, the password and account policy already applied to local Ubuntu logins also controls the browser login.

Use a dedicated PAM profile only when needed

If your organization needs a custom policy, create and maintain /etc/pam.d/rstudio rather than changing authentication files blindly. A custom profile can affect password rules, account restrictions, multi-factor integrations, and lockout behavior. Validate it with a test account while you still have an administrative SSH session; a syntax or policy error can prevent every RStudio login.

Apply least privilege

  • Create one Linux account per person who needs an interactive session.
  • Grant sudo only when a user genuinely administers the VPS; ordinary analysis accounts do not need it.
  • Do not design a workflow around logging into RStudio Server as root.
  • Remove or disable accounts when access is no longer required, using the same process you use for SSH access.

Secure RStudio Server before public exposure

Posit strongly recommends running RStudio Server on a secured network or enabling TLS/SSL before exposing it to the public internet. This is important because the default listener is unencrypted HTTP: credentials and session traffic can be intercepted on an untrusted path.

Restrict the network boundary

For a private deployment, allow TCP 8787 only from a VPN, office address range, or administrator IPs. With Ubuntu’s uncomplicated firewall, a narrowly scoped rule can look like this:

sudo ufw allow from YOUR_TRUSTED_IP to any port 8787 proto tcp
sudo ufw status verbose

Replace the source with the actual trusted address or network, and apply equivalent restrictions in the VPS provider’s firewall. Do not copy a broad “allow 8787 from anywhere” rule into production simply because it makes the first browser test work.

Put HTTPS in front of the service

For an internet-facing deployment, terminate TLS at a properly configured reverse proxy or use the supported RStudio Server TLS configuration. Point a DNS name at the proxy, obtain a certificate for that name, and forward authenticated HTTPS traffic to the private RStudio listener. Redirect HTTP to HTTPS, renew the certificate automatically, and keep the certificate’s private key readable only by the account that needs it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The exact proxy and certificate commands depend on the proxy software and certificate authority you select. The non-negotiable properties are encrypted transport, a valid certificate, restricted upstream access, and a firewall that does not leave the raw application port unnecessarily exposed.

Separate administrative and user access

Keep SSH restricted to administrators and use RStudio accounts for analysis. Monitor both authentication failures and system logins. If the service must be reachable by many users, place it behind a VPN, identity-aware gateway, or another access layer that limits the audience instead of publishing port 8787 to every internet address.

Troubleshoot a service that will not start

Start with systemd to establish the service state:

sudo systemctl status rstudio-server
sudo journalctl -u rstudio-server --no-pager

Posit notes that after daemonization, the underlying fatal error is usually in the RStudio server log rather than in the short systemd summary. Inspect:

sudo less /var/log/rstudio/rstudio-server/rserver.log

Look for the first meaningful error, not just the final “failed” line. Common branches are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Package or architecture errors

If installation refused the package, compare the Ubuntu release in /etc/os-release, the architecture from dpkg --print-architecture, and the package selection on Posit’s download page. Download the matching Ubuntu/Debian build and retry with sudo apt install ./package-name.deb.

R cannot be found or launched

Run R --version as the administrator and inspect the R-related message in rserver.log. Repair the R installation or its shared libraries first. Reinstalling the web package will not fix a broken R runtime.

Port conflicts

If another process owns 8787, identify it with:

sudo ss -ltnp | grep ':8787'

Stop or reconfigure the conflicting process, or change the RStudio Server port in /etc/rstudio/rserver.conf and then restart the service. If you change the port, update the firewall and the browser address together.

Browser timeout while the service is healthy

Test in this order: verify the service is listening locally, check the VPS firewall, check the cloud firewall, and then check DNS. A successful local verification does not establish external routing. If a reverse proxy is used, inspect its listener, certificate, and upstream settings separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Login rejected

Confirm that the account is a normal local user, that its password works through SSH or a local console, and that no custom /etc/pam.d/rstudio policy is denying it. Review the authentication-related entries in the RStudio log and the system authentication logs without weakening policy just to make one test account work.

Operate and maintain the VPS

Restart safely after configuration changes

sudo systemctl restart rstudio-server
sudo systemctl status rstudio-server

Make changes during a maintenance window when users have active sessions. A restart can interrupt running R work, so save notebooks and scripts before applying configuration or package updates.

Keep a recovery path

  • Maintain an SSH administrator account that is independent of RStudio Server.
  • Back up project files, important data, configuration files, and the database or state used by any supporting services.
  • Retain the last known-good R package and RStudio Server package information so you can reproduce the installation.
  • Watch disk usage: user libraries, downloaded data, package caches, and logs can grow independently of the operating system.
  • Review /var/log/rstudio/rstudio-server/rserver.log after upgrades and after unexplained session failures.

Plan upgrades around compatibility

Upgrade Ubuntu, R, and RStudio Server as separate changes when possible. Read the current Posit package notes before moving between Ubuntu releases, test critical R packages on a staging VPS, and keep the package architecture aligned with the host. A release upgrade that changes the available R version can affect compiled packages even when RStudio Server itself starts normally.

Deployment checklist

  • Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or 24.04 LTS is selected, with its lifecycle understood.
  • A normal sudo administrator exists, and root is not used for interactive RStudio work.
  • The VPS architecture is known and the matching Ubuntu/Debian package is downloaded.
  • R is installed and starts successfully before RStudio Server installation.
  • sudo rstudio-server verify-installation completes successfully.
  • The service starts at boot and responds on the intended port.
  • Each user has an individual Linux account governed by the intended PAM policy.
  • Port 8787 is restricted to trusted networks during testing.
  • HTTPS/TLS is configured before public exposure, or the service remains behind a secured private network.
  • SSH access, backups, logs, and an upgrade rollback plan are available.

The Bottom Line

Install R first, select the Posit package that matches your Ubuntu release and architecture, verify the service locally, and treat port 8787 as an internal endpoint until you have enforced least-privilege access and HTTPS or another secured network boundary.
