You can reduce routine interruptions and still let selected callers reach you—but Do Not Disturb is not an emergency communications system. On iPhone, use Focus exceptions or Emergency Bypass; on Android, use Do Not Disturb’s People filters and, if useful, repeat callers. Separately configure Emergency SOS and know how to reach local emergency services. Test your settings with a trusted contact while Do Not Disturb is active.
Three different needs require three different settings
It helps to separate three goals that are easy to confuse:

- Let a trusted person interrupt silence: Configure Focus or Do Not Disturb exceptions for calls or messages.
- Contact emergency services: Use your local emergency number or your phone’s Emergency SOS features, where supported.
- Receive a callback from emergency services: This depends on the phone, network, and local emergency-service systems. A Do Not Disturb exception cannot guarantee that a call will connect.
Being listed as an emergency contact does not, by itself, ensure that the person’s ordinary calls bypass Do Not Disturb. Set up the relevant notification exception separately.
Set up iPhone Focus exceptions
Allow selected people or repeat callers
- Open Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb > People.
- Choose the people allowed to notify you, and review the repeated-call option.
- With Focus active, ask a trusted person to call so you can confirm the behavior.
Apple describes repeat calls as two or more calls from the same person within three minutes. This is a Focus-level rule; it is not the same as allowing a particular contact through at all times.

Use Emergency Bypass for a contact
- Open Contacts and select the person.
- Tap Edit, then tap Ringtone or Text Tone.
- Turn on Emergency Bypass for calls, texts, or both, according to what you want to allow.
Emergency Bypass allows that contact’s sounds and vibrations even when the phone or notifications are silenced. The tradeoff is that the person’s ordinary calls or messages of the type you enabled can also interrupt silence—not just a message marked as an emergency. Choose between this contact-level behavior and the narrower Focus exceptions based on how reachable you need to be.
Set up Android Do Not Disturb
- Open Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb.
- Open the notification filters and, under People, choose which calls and messages are allowed.
- If you want a second chance for an urgent caller, enable Allow repeat callers.
- Activate Do Not Disturb and have a trusted contact test the calls or messages you chose to allow.
Google says repeat callers can get through when the same person calls twice within 15 minutes. Android settings vary by phone maker and software version; some steps require Android 14 or newer. On older versions, look under Sound or Do Not Disturb preferences, or check the phone maker’s instructions if the labels differ.

Know what happens when you contact emergency services
Emergency SOS and emergency contacts
Set up Emergency SOS, Medical ID, and emergency contacts separately from ordinary Focus or Do Not Disturb rules. On supported iPhones, SOS can call emergency services and may then notify emergency contacts and share your location when available. Apple documents a side-button-and-volume-button hold and, where enabled, a five-press option; the described sequence differs in India. Availability and operation depend on the model, region, and network conditions. Satellite SOS is limited to supported models and is not available everywhere. Check the setup and instructions for your device and location rather than assuming every feature is available.

Apple says that after an emergency call, certain features that block or silence incoming calls—including Do Not Disturb—may be disabled briefly so emergency services can call back. Apple does not promise a universal duration or identical behavior on every network. Do not rely on this as a substitute for knowing how to contact local emergency services or for checking that your trusted-contact exceptions work.

Phone notification settings cannot create cellular coverage or guarantee delivery through a power outage, network failure, carrier limitation, or local public-safety limitation.
Texting 911 in the United States
In the United States, 911.gov advises calling if you can and texting if you cannot call: “Even if text-to-911 services are available in your community, a voice call remains the best way to reach 911.” Text-to-911 availability varies by location. If the service is unsupported, the provider should send a bounce-back message. Check local emergency-service guidance; outside the United States, follow the instructions for your area.

Test the configuration before you depend on it
- Turn on Do Not Disturb or the iPhone Focus you intend to use.
- Ask a trusted person to call and, if relevant, send a message. Confirm which alerts make a sound or vibrate and which remain silent.
- If you enabled repeat callers, check the behavior using that platform’s documented window: three minutes on iPhone Focus or 15 minutes on Android.
- Confirm that the right contact and alert type—calls, texts, or both—are allowed. Adjust the exception if routine interruptions are getting through.
- Separately review Emergency SOS and emergency-contact setup, and learn your local emergency number and available calling options.
