Set your goalie lineup only after checking four league rules: whether lineups lock daily or weekly, which goalie stats or points count, whether there is a maximum games-played limit, and whether there is a minimum goalie-appearance requirement. Then pace likely starts against that threshold and choose based on your matchup—not simply the number of games the goalie’s NHL team plays.
Check your goalie cap before the week starts
Open your league’s settings and note the rules that determine which starts can count. Record:

- Whether lineups are daily or weekly, and when each player locks.
- Your matchup dates and active goalie slots.
- Goalie scoring categories or points, including wins, shutouts, save percentage (SV%) and goals-against average (GAA), if used.
- Any maximum goalie games played or minimum goalie appearances.
- Transaction limits, roster deadlines and any rules for over-limit play.
A maximum and a minimum are different constraints: a maximum limits how many appearances can count, while a minimum requires your team to reach a threshold. The platform’s defaults do not prove that your private or custom league uses those rules. For example, ESPN says its goalie maximum is off by default, though a league manager can configure one; its Games Played Limits (Maximums) guidance describes entered limits as representing a standard seven-day matchup, with longer or shorter matchups scaled proportionally. Check the current settings and instructions for your own league.
Platform examples are not universal rules. Yahoo’s default-settings help result lists two goalie roster spots and a maximum of 82 games, but a custom league may differ. Likewise, CBSSports’ 2026–27 rules include a roto goalie-games minimum of 82, or 40 for leagues beginning after October 16, 2026. Those figures apply to that product’s stated rules, not fantasy hockey in general.

Estimate goalie starts, not just team games
Count the NHL games each rostered goalie’s team has during your matchup, then estimate which games that goalie is likely to start. Team games are opportunities, not confirmed goalie appearances; a backup may start some of them, and a scheduled game does not establish who will be in net.
For a goalie tandem—two goalies on the same NHL team—consider both the likely split of starts and each goalie’s potential category impact. NHL.com’s fantasy hockey glossary describes tandem ownership and streaming based on schedule or matchup, while cautioning that managers need to balance start volume against efficiency. Do not treat a projected starter as confirmed unless a current lineup designation supports it; check again near puck drop.

When comparing goalies, weigh:
- How likely each one is to start, rather than the raw number of team games.
- How many starts you expect before and after reaching a minimum or cap.
- Opponent and team context as matchup considerations.
- Whether the start helps the scoring categories or point values in your league.
- Whether your matchup needs volume or protection for efficiency stats.
How to pace starts under a goalie limit
If your league has a maximum
Track goalie appearances already used, the remaining cap and the days left in the matchup. Avoid using the entire allowance early unless that fits your scoring situation: later starts may be more valuable, especially if your league counts categories such as wins or shutouts.
Know the exact over-cap behavior. Under ESPN’s described rule, a team that exceeds its configured cap continues to accrue stats for the rest of that day, but will not earn the affected goalie or skater stats on later days until the matchup or season ends. ESPN also says a team can go over the limit on the final day and still earn that day’s stats. Do not assume another platform handles overages the same way.

If your league has a minimum
Estimate whether your likely starts will reach the minimum. If you are at risk of falling short, you may need to accept more goalie volume. Once the threshold is met, you can be more selective when a poor outing could hurt SV% or GAA. The exact counting and consequences of missing a minimum depend on your league’s rules, so use its official settings rather than assuming one platform’s behavior.
If there is no goalie cap or minimum
You can focus on category impact and workload without pacing to a threshold. More appearances may add chances for wins and shutouts, but a poor start can damage ratio categories. The right balance depends on your scoring and matchup.

Choose starts based on matchup scoring
In a head-to-head category league, compare the goalie categories you can still gain or protect. If you are ahead in SV% or GAA, another start brings ratio risk; if you are behind in wins or shutouts, a likely start may be worth that risk. The impact depends on your league’s scoring and current matchup, not on a universal rule that more starts are always better.

In a points league, use your league’s actual goalie scoring weights. Do not assume that standard categories translate into points the same way. NHL.com distinguishes category and points formats and identifies wins, GAA, SV% and shutouts among standard goalie categories.

Daily versus weekly lineup locks
Daily lineups
Review the slate and your lineup before each player’s deadline. A daily manager can adjust as schedule and starter information firm up, but a late change is useful only if it is made before that player locks.
Weekly lineups
Before the week begins, compare the full schedule, expected goalie usage, your cap or minimum and the matchup’s category needs. Once a weekly lineup locks, you may not be able to react to a changed goalie rotation.
CBSSports’ 2026–27 rules offer one specific example: its weekly scoring period runs Monday through Sunday, weekly lineups cannot be changed once the week begins, and each player locks five minutes before that player’s first scheduled game of the period. Confirm your own league’s dates and lock timing rather than applying those CBS rules elsewhere.

Yahoo’s “Start Active Players” feature is a convenience, not a replacement for goalie planning. Yahoo’s help result says the feature can move a bench player into a lineup under certain conditions, such as when the bench player has a scheduled game and the starter does not, and recommends reviewing the result. It is unavailable in leagues using a weekly roster transaction deadline. Check the current Yahoo Start Active Players instructions and your league interface; the help-page details may change.
